Long story short. Moving soon so just using up all food we have in fridge freezer and cupboard before we go.
So tonight is shepherds pie. I'm not going to buy any extra ingredients either. I usually have it with a side of veg or salad but were out of salad and I'm not looking to do veg because ds won't eat that and prob won't eat the Shepard's pie either come to think of it!
Aibu to serve with chips?

Savoy cabbage on the side in this house.

JanetLovesJason · 02/11/2018 20:06

Peas, carrots, broccoli...if I haven’t put extra veggies in it already.

BIWI · 02/11/2018 20:10

@Pebblespony - they're lovely on toast! You have to have the tomatoes without the juice though, as that just makes the toast way too soggy.

Genopy · 02/11/2018 20:11

Garlic bread and tomato ketchup 😋

redsummershoes · 02/11/2018 20:13

nothing
maybe steamed veg of salad leaves.

Mummaluelae · 02/11/2018 20:37

@pebblespony tinned toms on toast or jacket potato or with a fry up is lovely!

Do you reduce them down to a paste or just heat them? Or cold? Confused

MsRinky · 03/11/2018 01:11

Thank god someone finally said pickled beetroot, the only permissible side.

MumGoneCrazy · 03/11/2018 01:12

I always have it with chips Blush

Thismummyruns · 03/11/2018 01:28

Red sauce 😆

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 03/11/2018 01:50

Maybe broccoli but I had it the other day with cauliflower cheese. Decadent but bloody inspired. It was delicious.

Serin · 03/11/2018 09:24

Pickled beetroot and something green (green beans, kale, savoy cabbage).

Mummaluelae · 03/11/2018 21:21

Strumpet we love cottage pie too. I brown the mince and drain off the fat. I add oxo cubes, Worcester sauce, a table spoon of marmite, salt & pepper and a couple of tins of chopped tomatoes.
I make a jug of broth and add splashes as the mince cooks.
While the mince is cooking I fry onions, garlic and carrots and put to one side.

I peel the spuds and let them stand in cold water.
Next i fry a couple of sliced leaks in butter and set aside.
I put the timer on the hob for 20 mins and leave the mince alone.

After 20 mins I stir the mince and add broth when needed.
I do this for 2 1/2 hours.
Making sure the mince doesn't dry out. Then i add the garlic, carrots and frozen peas and set the timer for 20 mins again. I keep going back to stir in the broth.
After about an hour I put the mince in a dish and leave it to cool.

Then I boil the spuds and mash them with butter, cheese, salt, pepper and the leaks.

By now the mince is cool so when you spread the spuds on top of the mince, the spuds won't sink. I add more cheese on top of the mash and cook in the oven for about an hour.

Cottage pie that melts in your mouth!

Bloody hell, I'm starving now Grin

peas, pickled beetroot and red cabbage...perfect!

AnnaMagnani · 04/11/2018 10:53

Green veg.

I don't believe I've seen tinned tomatoes in anything other than a sauce since 1981, thank God. It's where they belong.

MummaGiles · 04/11/2018 10:56

Green veg. And definitely some pickled beetroot.

NonaGrey · 04/11/2018 10:59

Generally broccoli, green beans or perhaps cabbage.

BertyFlanter · 04/11/2018 11:21

How has no one mentioned fresh crusty bread 😯 with lashings of salted butter 🤤

KingBee · 05/11/2018 19:44

Pickled beetroot is a must!

OhFlipMama · 05/11/2018 19:45

Peas, or green beans and maybe other veg.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 05/11/2018 19:51

Red cabbage, spring greens, peas.

Jenniferturkington · 05/11/2018 19:57

Cabbage and peas with butter. And thick gravy.

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 05/11/2018 21:13

Oh @Crisps that sounds amazing! And I'm so pleased to see I'm not the only one who likes to add a dollop of marmite to a shepherds pie 😋
