Long story short. Moving soon so just using up all food we have in fridge freezer and cupboard before we go.
So tonight is shepherds pie. I'm not going to buy any extra ingredients either. I usually have it with a side of veg or salad but were out of salad and I'm not looking to do veg because ds won't eat that and prob won't eat the Shepard's pie either come to think of it!
Aibu to serve with chips?

I usually do broccoli which I keep in the freezer rather than using it fresh. But if you don't have any I'd do beans not chips. Mash and chips is too carby.

Beans?! That's just bloody weird.

Definitely garden peas here, maybe some other green veg if I was feeling particularly healthy.

Mummaluelae · 02/11/2018 17:06

Ty for responses. Beans I just can't bring myself to do it's cringy

Peas and or sweet corn

Reaa · 02/11/2018 17:09

Beans Grin

jq28 · 02/11/2018 17:11

Broccoli and Yorkshire puddings!

3TresTrois · 02/11/2018 17:13

Some sort of steamed green veg, usually. Although it tokenistic, really. Shepherds pie is a complete meal to me (especially with cheese on top) Grin

HalfBloodPrincess · 02/11/2018 17:14

Savoy cabbage or Brussel sprouts

AlpacaLypse · 02/11/2018 17:15

Peas or green beans.

ileclerc · 02/11/2018 17:17

Peas go in it in this house, we don't have anything with it.

RomanyRoots · 02/11/2018 17:17

Peas and carrots, or peas and carrot/swede mashed.
Or cauli and Broccoli with carrots.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/11/2018 17:17

Who on earth uses tin tomatoes for anything other than sauces???

Surely it doesn’t need a side? It has veg inside it doesn’t it?

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/11/2018 17:18

This thread reminds me of being at school. For some reason shepherds/cottage pies were always served with coleslaw 🤨, to this day I have no clue why. I’d stick with beans or peas.

ChicagoLil · 02/11/2018 17:18

Peas.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/11/2018 17:19

Tinned plum tomatoes are epic, preferably with malt vinegar and white pepper. Chopped tinned toms for sauces only.

DeathMetalMum · 02/11/2018 17:19

We're having cottage pie tonight. Well have it with peas, cabbage and some babycorn - for the DC.

SettledTraveller · 02/11/2018 17:20

Yorkshire puddings and then scoop big spoonfuls into the puddings!

Pebblespony · 02/11/2018 17:20

Beans and tinned tomatoes, no. Just no.

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 02/11/2018 17:29

Ooof now I fancy a nice shepherds pie. What's everyone's best recipes? I heard a rumour about putting a bit of egg and cheese in the mash??

mayhew · 02/11/2018 17:32

Pickled beetroot. Lovely

MsJuniper · 02/11/2018 17:53

Carrots. Maybe peas too.

PickAChew · 02/11/2018 18:22

Tinned plum tomatoes are delicious with lots of black pepper, served with bacon. Not with shepherd's pie, though.

Pebblespony · 02/11/2018 18:29

I dont think I've ever seen tinned tomatoes as anything other than a sauce ingredient. The concept that they are a component of a meal in their own right seems strange to me.

OohMrDarcy · 02/11/2018 18:34

I do it with green beans and brocolli on the side. Inside it has leek / celery / carrots / peas

Notso · 02/11/2018 20:04

Salad with shepherds pie? Grim.
I don't see the point of chips with it either.

My shepherds pie has carrots in the meat bit and leeks in the mashed potato.
We usually have broccoli, peas and or green beans with it.

Cottage pie has carrots in too but no leek mash.
