Favourite fillings for toasted sandwich maker

I usually make ham / cheese / tomato toasties by buttering bread on the outside and then frying on a hot pan till crispy and golden and they are delicious.

However I am drawn to the idea of buying a proper toasted sandwich maker - we used to have one about 10yrs ago but I don't think it made the move to this house. As I recall we used it but really only to make ham / cheese / tomato sandwiches

As a teen I hated ham and cheese and used to have them filled with jam!

There is no point buying one just to make the same old thing I make anyway so can you inspire me with your best combinations please?

Also any recommendations for a decent machine. Our old one did the job but didn't seem to 'seal' the bread very week and there was always a horrible mess to clean up after - greasy crusted melted cheese!

Thanks

Deep fill sandwich toaster for anyone interested. They make loads of stuff in it on the advert!

Stinkle · 09/01/2015 16:14

Baked beans, with bacon and mushrooms.

The only reason I bought a sandwich toaster was after having that concoction in a Dunelm Mill cafe

You could do sweet ones too.

Brioche loaf cut to size with sweet fillings.

Choc spread & orange.

Or choc orange chocs & segments of orange.

Ham & pineapple - savory & sweet.

Any berry mix.

You could do one with a slab of icecream in the middle.

Sooo hungry now. Grin

Served with a dollop of mayo. Yum.

GooodMythicalMorning · 09/01/2015 16:17

Yes Egg is lush in a toasty.

FelixFelix · 09/01/2015 16:17

Youtube have videos on how to make cakes in your toastie machine Shock

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/01/2015 16:18

Slices of cooked beef and Stilton.

FelixFelix · 09/01/2015 16:18

I wonder if you could make eggy bread with filling? I've given up bread so someone needs to test this out for me immediately.

Cheese, ham, mushrooms and garlic salt. Yum...

We have a panini grill thing which replaced our sandwich toaster. So much easier to clean than a sandwich toaster.

Corned beef, baked beans & finely chopped onion - ultimate comfort food but definitely requires a sealing toastie machine! Same mix can be put in pastry for pies/pasties, FYI!

Sarsparilla · 09/01/2015 16:24

I use a George Foreman grill to make mine.

Camembert, roasted peppers (from a jar), chilli

Camembert, salami and mango chutney

Strong cheddar, ham, tomato and mustard

Blue cheese, crispy bacon and sliced avocado

Blue cheese, tomato and chopped walnuts

Strong cheddar and chopped spring onion

Tomato pasta sauce, mozzarella, strong cheddar or gruyere, or any other cheese that happens to be in the fridge, a sprinkle of dried oregano.

Have never tried a sweet one, must have a go...

So many good ideas can we move this to the food section so it doesn't get deleted? How does that happen - does the OP have to ask?

I gave away a really good toasted sandwich maker in a fit of de cluttering and regret it now - I used to get fed up with chipping off melted cheese.

I've been thinking of getting a panini one instead - would that do the trick and be more versatile?

YackityUnderTheMistletoe · 09/01/2015 16:25

Creamed corn is delish, you could even add things like ham, or chicken to it. (Wouldn't make that one in a Panini press....)

YackityUnderTheMistletoe · 09/01/2015 16:26

Oh, memories of creamed corn toasties with a cup a soup for lunch at my old work place in my 20s.....

Zazzabeans · 09/01/2015 16:30

Chicken Brie and cranberry

When I was a child I used to LOVE corned beef and onion but I found out what's in it so havent ate it since I was about 12 :(

MauriceTheCat · 09/01/2015 16:34

We add mini marshmallows to nutella and banana for a dessert

MrsMcRuff · 09/01/2015 16:37

Brie and grape. Yum!

PartyFops · 09/01/2015 16:53

Egg and cheese : put slice of cheddar on the bread and just crack an egg on top and close it quickly before it escapes. GrinGrin

You have to leave it a good few minutes to ensure its cooked, but you want it runny!

Am salivating now!

Thank you for all the suggestions! Some amazing combinations here alright. I really like the idea of the sweet ones and I am very tempted by the camembert, roasted pepper and chilli one - dh would LOVE this. I am not sure I like salami in a toastie, I think it gets a bit sweaty / slimey. Might try chorizo though.

I am very intrigued by the egg ones but don't fancy egg and cheese to need to think what else to put it with.

I have eaten a panini style one in Italy filled with a sort of omelette and it was very delicious.

Wonder what peanut butter and jam would be like? I like this on toast sometimes so I presume I would like it in a toastie..

We received a sandwich/panini maker for Xmas from DMIL.

So far we have had pulled pork sandwiches and this morning I used the left over chicken from last nights meal and put cheese and tomatoes with it, then lots of mayo. Was yummy. Grin

fidgetywidget · 09/01/2015 18:58

In the same vein as one of MrsVamos' suggestions, chocolate spread with Jaffa cakes Grin yum! Not had it since student days but it's now on the menu for breakfast tomorrow!

GoringBit · 09/01/2015 19:02

Baked beans and cheese toasty is bliss, but don't bite into it as soon as it's cooked, it will hurt. (Greedy voice of experience.) Ooh, and add crushed garlic to the beans. Lovely.

expatinscotland · 09/01/2015 19:06

I cannot eat cheese due to lactose intolerance, but vegan pesto and chicken is wonderful in a toasty, as is chocolate spread with raspberry jam and fried egg with baked bean and bacon.

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 19:20

I've just eaten a choc spread and banana toastie.

Oh. My. Goodness.

I'm going shopping tomorrow for bread of several varieties and toastie fillers.

That's dinner sorted for next week. Grin

Might try making a cake too.

Panini maker and deep-filled toastie makers are also on the shopping list. Wink
