Favourite fillings for toasted sandwich maker

I usually make ham / cheese / tomato toasties by buttering bread on the outside and then frying on a hot pan till crispy and golden and they are delicious.

However I am drawn to the idea of buying a proper toasted sandwich maker - we used to have one about 10yrs ago but I don't think it made the move to this house. As I recall we used it but really only to make ham / cheese / tomato sandwiches

As a teen I hated ham and cheese and used to have them filled with jam!

There is no point buying one just to make the same old thing I make anyway so can you inspire me with your best combinations please?

Also any recommendations for a decent machine. Our old one did the job but didn't seem to 'seal' the bread very week and there was always a horrible mess to clean up after - greasy crusted melted cheese!

Thanks

corned beef, baked beans and cheddar cheese (with a dollop of mayo).

I also like red onion and coronation chicken.

And red onion and cheddar.

I do mine on a griddle a bit like a George Foreman too and it means you can do paninis as well as sandwiches. I like the following:

Ham, cheese and green pesto (with or without sliced tomato)

This one is strange but really works - although I prefer it in a panini to a sandwich... spread one slice of bread/panini with mayo and add a spread of english mustard to your taste, then smoked ham, emmental cheese and sliced pickled gherkin - yum!

Bacon with lot's of cheese........ LOTS OF CHEESE is heaven.

blowinahoolie · 09/01/2015 19:49

I only use a George Foreman to do toasties and paninis.

Aethelfleda · 09/01/2015 19:53

Weight watchers do mini tins of tuna mix, also you can get mackerel/herring tins in sauce. Scrummy in toasties!

Also -trust me- taramasalata (on thick!) sounds awful
But it's lush.....

We have a panini press, I love cheese and ham. I miss the old style where you could seal in beans.

Expat have you tried Lactofree cheese? We use the mild as DD's are lactose intolerant, nephew uses the mature one,

Yes - op please report and ask for it to be moved to food.

My tummy is rumbling!

Can anyone recommend a toastie maker. We had a cheap one and it was rubbish.

When I was a kid, my lovely Grams used me make me Heinz spaghetti toasties in her breville toasted sandwich maker. Mmmmm. So good with all that browned melty butter outside.

Someone was saying about paninis. I make them on my George formby foreman grill. I used part baked baguettes filled with ham and cheese, or tuna and cheese. They take a few minutes max.

I have a griddle which makes amazing toasties. My favourite is either ciabatta or focaccia bread, split & spread with pesto, then add sliced mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes & either Parma ham or salami. It's gorgeous.
I also love cheddar cheese & sliced spring onions or red onions.
Pesto & goats cheese is very good too.

We've got one called the cuisinart overstuffed sandwich maker. It does the job and the plates go in the dishwasher.

Some good ideas on here. We go through phases of using it loads then it goes back in the cupboard for months.

Those of you suggesting mashed potato, do you mean in bread or are you just making potato cake things?

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 20:32

I have reported and asked HQ if the thread can be moved.

Hope that's OK, SuperG Smile

TeaandHobnobs · 09/01/2015 20:36

Rather than a toastie-maker (and the resultant cleaning), I have those "pockets" you pop in the toaster - I think they come from Lakeland or Robert Dyas.

My fave is cheese and caramelised onion chutney (not that exciting, but always good).

Icedfinger · 09/01/2015 20:37

I love a good toastie.

Cheese and chorizo
Tuna and cheese
Bolognaise
Chilli con carne
Beans and cheese

When I was little we used to make tomato sauce and mild mustard toasties. Yum.

maitaimojito · 09/01/2015 20:43

Brie, bacon and cranberry is our favourite.

I also had a pulled pork, cheddar and red onion panini from a sandwich shop the other day which was very good.

MrsVamos · 09/01/2015 20:43

Excellent, SuperG Grin

Might not happen till Monday. HQ will be well at the Gin by now. Wink

Pesto cheese and tomato.
Chicken bacon and cheese
Corned beef baked bean and cheese
Tuna cheese

Pico2 · 09/01/2015 20:56

You also don't need to butter the outside of the bread in a toastie maker - just use spray oil like frylight.

trixymalixy · 09/01/2015 21:00

tuna mayo and cheese is my favourite
