DD3 has requested these for a family event on Saturday.

I am far too much of a snob progressive to put them on cocktail sticks.

Anyone with a funky way of doing it?

Pah, you old snob, you! Stick them in half a grapefruit covered in foil, a la hedgehog and get on with it! WinkGrin

Some things just can't be improved on! Bloody lovely!

CatIsSleepy · 05/05/2011 19:55

oh, just embrace the naffness, why not?

DamselInDisguise · 05/05/2011 19:57

I say go with the hedgehog too, but if you refuse... What about a cheese and fruit board (including chunks of cheddar and pineapple)?

Spagbolagain · 05/05/2011 19:59

If you try to make it un-naff, it will look naffer, like you are ashamed of your party food.

Go with it, embrace it, stick them in half a tinfoil-covered grapefruit. Serve with vol au vents, twiglets and a Birds trifle.

Besom · 05/05/2011 19:59

And get some sausages and pickled onions on there as well ffs!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/05/2011 19:59

have you a wooden or bamboo platter?

go with them on cocktail sticks but present on the platter, post-modern stylee channel your inner pampered chef laydee

Spagbolagain · 05/05/2011 20:00

Haha X posts with everybody :o

pantaloons · 05/05/2011 20:01

When we have them at school parties the sticks are banned so we put them in a big bowl along with some grapes. They actually look really nice.

CatIsSleepy · 05/05/2011 20:02

how about a cheese fondue with pineapple chunks to dunk

Oakmaiden · 05/05/2011 20:04

cheese and pineapple on sticks are my absolute favourite party food.

That and chocolate cornflake cakes.

You can't improve upon perfection!

Besom · 05/05/2011 20:04

Just an aside - why the tin foil?

DamselInDisguise · 05/05/2011 20:06

The tin foil makes it look more special. Obviously.

CatIsSleepy · 05/05/2011 20:06

besom-it's the way it has been done down through the ages

DameShirleyKnot · 05/05/2011 20:08

Or...you could do skewers of Halloumi haloumi haloumi squeaky cheese and pineapple and cook them on the BBQ.

ohnoshedittant · 05/05/2011 20:08

lol @ damsel Grin

Spagbolagain · 05/05/2011 20:09

So that people think it is an amazing bespoke centrepiece, rather than half a grapefruit

annabelcaramel · 05/05/2011 20:11

You could put them on a sprig of thyme...but the hedgehog is truly the only real, pure way to do this.

You should watch Grandpa in my Pocket, Aunt Loretta's 'things on sticks' are magnificent. Pickled onion and marshmallow anyone?

DamselInDisguise · 05/05/2011 20:12

It'll look even more special if you make some lemon pigs to stand beside the hedgehog on the table.

DamselInDisguise · 05/05/2011 20:14

It will absolutely not be naff if you completely embrace the notion and go all out. Give the hedgehog a face, situate it in a salad grassland and make some little lemon pig friends to keep him company.

Your guests will love it.

TribbleWithoutACause · 05/05/2011 20:26

Come on, surely it's been around so long that it's become retro nowadays.

Retro isn't naff, it's being progressive by harking back to a more care free era thus commenting on the socio-ecomonic pressures of our time to display our status and 'classiness' via way of class acceptable party foods. Grin

As boys said, you could put a more modern spin on it by using fancy coloured reusable plastic sticks.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 05/05/2011 20:38

You lot are about as much help as a citrus farm animal.

Fecking swines.

Grin

You'll be wanting me to serve prawn cocktails in 007 glasses as well.

i make them kebab stylee with two bits of cheese and pineapple alternate, that funky enough for you

Rosebud05 · 05/05/2011 20:39

I did cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks stuck into two halves of grapefruit covered in foil for dd's retro themed birthday party.

I also found those hard, skinny Potato Sticks (remember those from the '70s) in Sainsbury's.

I drew the line at crab paste sandwiches, but had a moment of genius when I ADDED SPRINKLES to chocolate rice krispie cakes.

Tres snazzy, it was.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 05/05/2011 20:40

prawn cocktail om nom nom

MooMooFarm · 05/05/2011 20:41

I love cheese and pineapple. I don't put it on sticks though as I am a paranoid mother, I just bung the pineapple on the cheese board.
