DD3 has requested these for a family event on Saturday.

I am far too much of a snob progressive to put them on cocktail sticks.

Anyone with a funky way of doing it?

Just mutter to a few guests "Cheese and pineapple in a tin foil hedgehog is the new black"

Guaranteed they will all be eaten and next party you go to will have one Smile

pointydog · 05/05/2011 20:47

Embrace it. Put them on sticks in a grapefruit. It will make you smile.

BALD-that website is hilarious...jellied tomato refresher, oh my god

peeriebear · 05/05/2011 21:03

You have to go the whole (hedge) hog and do it properly. I always do some for parties but usually use half a melon cos it's all we have kicking about.
DH and I went to a very high brow wedding party last year, it cost an eyewatering amount; the groom said "I had a say in two things for today, the size of my shoes and the cheese and pineapple on the buffet" :o bless him.

Bald - I'd never have thought food could be so funny (and a bit scary).

Besom · 05/05/2011 21:06

The celery log and the blood bath chicken!

CatIsSleepy · 05/05/2011 21:07

that liver pate en masque is the stuff of nightmares, truly

SecretNutellaFix · 05/05/2011 21:09

It's not naff. it's RETRO, therefore extremely fashionable.

And it's a spud for the hedgehog, surely, not a grapefruit?Grin

piebald · 05/05/2011 21:11

We had a boxing day party and put the leftover sprouts on sticks a la hedgehog , everyone (well someone) loved them!!

Mspontipine · 05/05/2011 21:12

We had them on Royal Wedding day. Even had them as a seperated course!!! Ours were stuck into a foil covered potato. Tasty and classy :)

piebald · 05/05/2011 21:16

Those weight watchers cards are great-really mackerelly!!

Besom · 05/05/2011 21:18

Foil covered potato? Ok now I see the point of the foil.

Spagbolagain · 05/05/2011 21:19

Who'd have thought so many things could be jellied?
The frankfurter tower thing is genius.

floweryblue · 05/05/2011 21:21

How old is DD3? If she 'cooks' pineapple and cheese on cocktail sticks with your help all by herself, you will be seen as the best mum in the world, she will be a culinary genius who understands faff (not naff) and your guests will have the pleasure of enjoying one of the yummiest food combinations in the history of food. Everybody wins

Smash09 · 06/05/2011 18:11

I personally see nothing wrong with the naffness. Food is overcomplicated these days!!
However, circles of fresh pineapple with goats cheese sprinkled over, on a big plate, and if you like some mint scattered on top, is a tasty alternative!

NettoSuperstar · 06/05/2011 18:18

Um, you could get really fancy unpasteurised cheddar, and do some sort of pineappley purée/dip thing and serve on a posh slate or some such?

I'd not bother though, just go for the orange cheddar and tinned pino in half a grapefruit.

NettoSuperstar · 06/05/2011 18:21

Or, or just serve chicken in a can next to it, and then your cheesy hedgehog will seem like gourmet food in comparison.

ChippingIn · 06/05/2011 18:23

I knew this would be YOU!! Grin

Just do it 70's style and put a BIG note beside them 'DD made me do it!!'

Nah - just do it, everyone loves it really!!

NettoSuperstar · 06/05/2011 19:18

I made one for DD and I the other week, like Nanny Pat's cheesey hedgehog.
I ate the cheese, DD ate the pineapple.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 06/05/2011 23:08

How the tippetyflip Chippy?

Urgh at pineapple with cheese. I have never liked that combo.

But yes - you cannot improve on a foil covered spud with these things sticking out. As long as you are not serving mushroom vol au vents and Big Posh Praaaahns a la Katona alongside people will get the irony.

trixymalixy · 06/05/2011 23:13

Just embrace the kitchness of it!! Is my all time favourite party food.

Honeydragon · 06/05/2011 23:17

Nutty

Where the fuckity fuck did you get spud from woman? it's a grapefruit, that's what makes it exotic!

Now get in the kitchen and make me some of those orange cup cakes! As we are having party food!

SecretNutellaFix · 06/05/2011 23:43

Honey, We were poor! Where the fuck do you think we could get a grapefruit from in rural West Wales when I was a small child. I don't think I even saw one until I was about 13 and they were bloody expensive!Grin
