Yes, Tom Cruise can act, who knew?

This is one hugely complicated film. Once you get your head around the fact that it's a play based on a real oil magnate, and swapping in and out of his real life and the play of his life, it makes some sense.

It's a dark film which doesn't hold out much hope for the future of mankind, so don't go expecting to be cheered up by it. There is comedy in it but it's dark.

I think it will be a couple of days until I stop making connections and understanding the points and comparisons it was making. I suspect a second viewing would expose even more.

I think it's likely to feature in the future in media studies, film studies and climate studies courses. If enough people understand just how deep a film it is it might even win Cruise the Oscar he apparently craves. I think he deserves it.

I saw Tom Cruise in Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July, so know he’s a very good actor. Can’t wait to see this, looks very interesting.

InFreeFall · 04/10/2026 17:58

I went to see it this afternoon. Having read some scathing reviews I was expecting the worst, but was actually quite pleasantly surprised by it, not least of all by Tom Cruise who I generally have a dim view of.

Having said all of that the plot within a plot type of thing left me utterly confused. (And I really didn't like John Goodman in it).

Who played Digger's mother? I can't find her listed in the cast online.

@InFreeFall

I have no idea what's gone on with quoting here!

Google says there's no mother in the film but there is an old woman character called Martha played by Marty Cruikshank.

I just watched it, I rate it 0/10. The only good bit was the announcement made at the end.

It's bombing in the US but not in the UK. Out of interest, are you British?

Did you read the first post?

After mulling it over for a few days I think it's a masterpiece, but not everyone is going to agree. We are planning to see it again if it stays in the cinemas long enough.

I agree. It’s a cult classic and absolutely brilliant.
I can see why some people might not
like it, but I was blown away by it!

DapperDame · Yesterday 17:28

Another vote for it being a superb film.

Scalessayeek · Yesterday 17:33

I thought it was amazing- came out and read the reviews and genuinely can’t see why people think it’s so poor? I felt catfished by the trailer to begin with but I think it delivered 😁

Karistyleaftea · Yesterday 17:46

Just got back from seeing it.
Utterly bizarre and brilliant.
I have always rated Tom Cruise as an actor, even more so in his later films and especially after seeing him in Collateral.
Digger was fascinating and Sandra Huller is worth watching in anything in my book!
As we came out the cinema DH heard someone saying that they would not be surprised if it became a cult classic.

Reformdeniesanywrongdoing · Yesterday 17:52

Absolutely (catfished by the trailer!).

This is not the film I signed up for and brought DS (15) to watch this afternoon. But it is very good and highlights succinctly a lot of the disingenuous nonsense we have been subjected to over the years without preaching.

Doesn't everyone know that he's an excellent Actor?

I'm not even a fan per se, but he was superb even way back in The Firm and pretty much everything that followed.

What are you basing your previous opion on OP?

Octoberismyfave · Yesterday 18:04

Interesting - I actually really want to see it since reading what it was actually about. Good to hear a good review of it. I did read somewhere that Magnolia got terrible reviews at the time and I thought that was amazing.

The Mission Impossibles, he always seemed just to be churning out the action man performance to me. I've always admired how he does his own stunts though. Amazing.

Because it's getting bad reviews, I just imagined a load of them getting on here trying to turn things around. 😂

I'm really surprised by the reviews now I've seen it. A lot of them say Cruise acts really badly.

I do think it will become a cult film. It reminds me a little of Waterworld, another post apocalyptic film which was panned but we love and watch every few years.

I thought it would become a cult film from reading the reviews( I havent seen it)..Mainly because the plot sounded like a clever novel by somone like J G Ballard or something and like it would make a really clever book. But when everyone said Tom Cruise was bad I just kind of imagined him hopping around like something out of the Dukes of Hazzard with a really terrible accent and prosthetics from Planet of the Apes🤣

Absolute crap. Worst film I have seen in a long time. I suggested to DH that we leave early and he said it might get better once Tom Cruise arrived (bless…).

TheSmellOfSea · Yesterday 23:02

Opinions here are from one extreme to another.

I'm definitely going to see it. I'll report back.

Love Tom though 😍
