Yes, Tom Cruise can act, who knew?

This is one hugely complicated film. Once you get your head around the fact that it's a play based on a real oil magnate, and swapping in and out of his real life and the play of his life, it makes some sense.

It's a dark film which doesn't hold out much hope for the future of mankind, so don't go expecting to be cheered up by it. There is comedy in it but it's dark.

I think it will be a couple of days until I stop making connections and understanding the points and comparisons it was making. I suspect a second viewing would expose even more.

I think it's likely to feature in the future in media studies, film studies and climate studies courses. If enough people understand just how deep a film it is it might even win Cruise the Oscar he apparently craves. I think he deserves it.

I saw this and loved it. It’s like an art house movie that has a stellar cast and a massive budget. I don’t understand all the negative reviews. Everyone in it is fabulous. It’s a hard watch though, it’s a sort of state of the nation piece which reflects very poorly on us all. It’s not Tom Cruises normal fare but if you like Magnolia I think you’ll enjoy this.

Loved it, it is a bit strange and I went in not expecting to like it but its thought provoking and not like many other films. I liked that it took you in and out of a fantasy, even up till the very end I'd get immersed in the scenes and then the show would cut to the real life in the film and it was so different. The trailer is so different to the film though, but I get why they did that so keep the twist a surprise

Another one here who really enjoyed it and felt angry that the reviewers had put it down so much!

We can make up our own minds, thank you.

Started off liking it, got bored, liked the ending. I’m perfectly capable of understanding it btw before anyone comments, that doesn’t mean it was great. I’m very tired of lengthy speeches in films as well (see Barbie movie, a speech everyone thought was amazing but was very basic).

Why are you angry, what does it matter if other people like it?

HamBap · 22/10/2026 17:51

Because people will see the reviews and not go which isn't fair on the public or the film makers.

I'd heard it was rubbish so went in expecting it to be and it wasn't!

It matters because I wanted to go and see it again but it wasn't getting enough bookings so it's finished quickly.

It also doesn't reward the film makers and we end up with nothing but anodyne popular films being made to be seen in the cinema

Oh I see, I never bother reading the reviews, and it’s still on in many cinemas.

Unfortunatelly that doesn't include the one I have a subscription to and get all my tickets for no charge.

Also, when films run out of viewers they often get restricted to one evening viewing time and we don't go to the cinema at that time.

It's not going to be streaming on Netflix or Amazon either by the look of it :(

Edited

Hopefully it will be available on TV soon if you don’t get to see it beforehand. I find you have to get in quick if you want to watch anything remotely arty.

I've seen it, I thought it was so interesting I wanted to see it again quickly to see what I'd missed the first time round. It's not often I feel that way about a film, the last one was Pirates of the Carribbean!
