I love world cinema especially French but it’s been a few years since I’ve really been able to enjoy films regularly and I want to return to enjoying French cinema. I’d appreciate any recommendations. It doesn’t matter if I’ve seen them so I won’t list them here because it’ll remind me of how much I loved them and to watch them again.

TIA

I liked Le Goute des Autres, Etre etc Avoir and interesting but slightly weird one called Le Chignon d'Olga.
And Jean de Florette and Manon de Source.

Just remembered another one, 'Populaire', a romantic comedy about a typewriting competition, believe it or not!

Cachet (Hidden), swimming pool, police. Any Daniel Auteil or Depardieu film.

There was one made mid 80s/90s with Depardieu where they both end up dead at the bottom of a staircase after an affair but I’ve forgotten the name. Typical French drama though.

And le tchis (the sticks), very funny.

NobodysChildNow · 30/03/2026 21:48

Jean de Florette
Manon des Sources
Gerard Depardieu’s version of Cyrano De Bergerac

Les Diner de Cons - I found it free on the internet the other day! It’s so funny

Merci Pour Le Chocolat starring Isabelle Huppert is a really good thriller.

I also like Amelie and there was a French series on Walter presents about an orchestra called Symphonie or something like that. There’s another series about an au pair on Iplayer, again forget the name but that was last year or year before.

Taxi is a great French action film by Luc Besson if you want something lightweight and enjoyable.

Second loads of these! Also:
Les emotifs anonymes is sweet and funny;
Il y a longtemps que je t’aime and Ne le dis a personne with the bloody awesome Kristen Scott Thomas;
Ma vie de courgette is a lovely, sad animated movie;
Le bonheur est dans le pre with a surprising bit part by Eric Cantona;
La Cage aux Folles!

Edit to add Ascenseur pour l'échafaud

Thanks everyone. I’m excited to watch as many of these as possible. I’ve missed enjoying a good movie but my concentration span was near non existent so I’m looking forward to returning to watching French films again and I’ve just found Un Coeur en Hiver on Youtube so I might start there.

The Intouchables (Untouchable). Wonderful, heartwarming and just brilliant

NewPhase23 · 30/03/2026 22:09

I was coming on to recommend Ne Le Dis À Personne (beautiful) and Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis (silly) but I see others have got there first so I'll chuck in:
Irreversible (harrowing) and Poltergay (the most ridiculous film you'll ever see).

TheKittenswithMittens · 30/03/2026 22:10

400 Coups - I am in it. One of the children at the puppet show.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 30/03/2026 22:10

I love Amelie! One of my favourite films ever.

I've also seen:

Les Femmes D'Lombre - a WWII film about female resistance fighters in France

Pour Elle - a thriller. After a woman is wrongly convicted of murder, her partner tries to break her out of prison.

La Vie en Rose - a biographical film about Edith Piaf

Jeune et Jolie - a 17-year-old girl becomes a high-class prostitute, possibly out of rebellion

Les Olympiades - a character-driven film about a diverse group of Parisians living in the 13th district and their complicated love lives.
