I love world cinema especially French but it’s been a few years since I’ve really been able to enjoy films regularly and I want to return to enjoying French cinema. I’d appreciate any recommendations. It doesn’t matter if I’ve seen them so I won’t list them here because it’ll remind me of how much I loved them and to watch them again.

TIA

Bit basic but I love Amelie!

Squirrelsnut · 30/03/2026 22:13

We've enjoyed the Monsieur Hulot films recently.

400 Coups - I am in it. One of the children at the puppet show.

That’s amazing! I’m very envious.

Another couple of animated ones, both a bit bonkers, are Les triplettrs de Belleville and Panique au village!
Oh, and Anatomie d’une chute is really gripping, won loads of awards a couple of years back

Mumteedum · 30/03/2026 22:16

Anatomy of a Fall. Superb film.

RampantIvy · 30/03/2026 22:18

La Gloire de mon Pere
Le Chateau de ma Mere

Both are based on Marcel Pagnol's memoirs. Beautifully shot and so atmospheric.

I also loved Manon des Sources and Jean de Florette, both written by Marcel Pagnol.

Mumteedum · 30/03/2026 22:19

Ohhh Cache...that's a fantastic film...!

Mountainormolehills · 30/03/2026 22:19

Most of my favourites have been mentioned apart from my absolute favourite - 36 - Depardieu and Auteuil team up against each other to battle for a top police job

I'd completely forgotten that film! I have it on dvd somewhere I think. Thanks 👍🏻

Le Choristes
Bienvenue les Ch'tes (comedy)
Le Diner de Cons (comedy)

Great choices! And what about Micmacs (also a comedy).

smilesy · 30/03/2026 22:23

Haven’t seen any for a long time but I would second
Diva
37 degree 2 le matin ((Betty Blue)
Subway
La Cage aux folles
La Femme Nikita
Leon

Sweetbeansandmochi · 30/03/2026 22:26

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon/The Diving Bell and the butterfly

Tell no one (2006) - it is in French

Pour Elle/anything for her

Not films but I enjoyed the following French series:
Bardot (Walter Presents on Channel 4)
Love and trouble in Paris (Walter Presents channel 4) - it’s in French
The 7 lives of Lea - Netflix - it’s in French despite my English titles

BigSkies2022 · 30/03/2026 22:30

That scene is amazing! (Puppet show). I also love the ride on the centrifuge.

BigSkies2022 · 30/03/2026 22:31

Saint Omer.

HeathenPlayingHouse · 30/03/2026 22:35

Maybe the wrong time of year for it, but I will always suggest Joyeux Noel.

However, if you’re only looking for French cinema, it may not hit the spot as it combines French, German and English.

I’ve always wanted to see that film so thank you for reminding me of it and the mixture of languages isn’t a problem.

The Belleville one is so funny.

JennyChawleigh · 30/03/2026 22:40

Seconding anything by Jacques Tati.

And 'Nouvelle Vague' a very recent film about the beginning of French New Wave cinema.

Stopsnowing · 30/03/2026 22:42

Elle - but could be triggering

I love that film too.

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/03/2026 22:44

L’appartement with Vincent Cassell and Monica Belucci.

EmmaOvary · 30/03/2026 22:46

Ridicule
Le Dîner de Cons
Se Souvenir Des Belles Choses

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 30/03/2026 22:47

La faute de l'Abbé Mouret (1976)
Grandisson (1979)

Not a film but Engrenages (Spiral in English) was the most gripping police series. French with subtitles, iPlayer.

Shrinkhole · 30/03/2026 22:47

Also love Diner de Cons and L’Haine
(I’m a bit miffed that I can’t think of anything other people haven’t already said. You all have such good taste clearly)

We've enjoyed the Monsieur Hulot films recently.

Me too, especially the one where he goes on holiday.
