Oh my god I’ve forgotten two major ones - Lupin and Tonks in HP. Just SO UNNECESSARY

Wasn't that the whole point of lupin and tonks though? To show the absolute futility of war, that victory comes at a cost and also leaving an orphan so came full circle from harry.

Not saying it wasn't totally devastating, but think it feeling like unnecessary pain was purposefully done.

Forgot to add Matthew from Anne of Green Gables

See also Walter Blythe in Rilla of Ingleside.

Liam - Fourth Wing

I was listening to this in an audiobook while at the gym and had to leave as I started getting upset

No one’s mentioned Nigel in The Archers totally unnecessary and unlikely it’s never been the same since.
Also poor Fatboy in Eastenders suffered from claustrophobia and met his end being locked in a car boot then sent to the crusher. I imagined his anguish for ages.

Yes, Nigel; not only unnecessary but so artificial. Plus we all know that David shoved him off the roof, anyway. It marked the beginning of the end.

Snape

It's the woman who fell down the stairs in EastEnders for me. Laura? Pat found her. With all the big dramatic deaths in soaps that one seemed so mundane and sad. Has also made me be more careful on the stairs since forever.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 14/11/2025 20:26

Oh god yeah, Somersby! Cried all the way home from the cinema!

38thparallel · 14/11/2025 20:26

ChoCho San in Madame Butterfly.

The baby in “Under the Hawthorne Tree”. That book in general is so devastating

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 14/11/2025 20:29

King Arthur in BBC's Merlin. I sobbed all night.

WorriedRelative · 14/11/2025 20:29

Nic Grundy, so sudden and unfair.

Diarmuid - The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy

Oh goodness yes. I was utterly, utterly stunned by that as a teenager. First book where I’ve ever properly sobbed while reading it.

(It had been bad enough when Kevin died, but Diarmuid was another level!)

ConnieHeart · 14/11/2025 20:31

Strong agree with Leslie in Terabithia and Beth too.

I can't even remember the name of the book but the main character had v little money and was cold so she ran a hot bath for her and her newborn baby, and accidentally fell asleep. The baby drowned. I didn't have kids at the time when I read it but it's a fictional event which pops unannounced into my brain far too often. Hits even harder now I'm a parent. Likewise the Irish mum and the little kids in titanic.

Nancy in Oliver
Brooks from Shawshank
Mufasa

Apparently this was Girl on a Train.

All of them from It's a Sin. Cried for pretty much the entire show.

OMG this. Although dare I say I had somewhat less sympathy for Richie after the reveal that he had continued to sleep with men after his diagnosis.

It was a bit of a crap story and all a bit daft with the impossibly long scream which I felt made it rather less devastating than some other deaths.
