Just googled it and it was 40 years ago!

Matthew in Downton 😭

Lance Sweets in Bones, I did try to keep watching but when they replaced him with a very similar looking actor I just stopped. His death was so unexpected, I felt genuinely shocked in the moment and then I missed his character afterwards.

Cait Todd in NCIS, again it was an unexpected shock. I kept watching but took a long time to warm up to Ziva and then when Ellie Bishop came along I stopped watching because I kept comparing her to Cait and finding her irritating in comparison. I did watch some later episodes with Jessica Knight and enjoyed it again.

Wash. Serenity. 🍂 💨

Yes, Wash was tragic. That was one of the best marriages on film IMO.

Toby Wren in Doomwatch. You'd have to be pretty old (as am I) to know what the hell I'm talking about.

I remember ! 👵🏼

Love this thread idea - thanks OP

So many honourable mentions I agree with, namely
Boxer (animal farm)
Matthew (Downton)
Wash (Serenity)
Beth (Little Women)
Rob Stark (GoT)

Thanks to the person who put the paragraph about Lee Scoresby and Hester, I’d forgotten it and now it’s ruined my evening. But what broke me as a tween reading HDM was when Will and Lyra went back to their own worlds, never to see each other again.

Very surprised no-one has mentioned Fred Weasley (HP) yet - his death upset me more than Sirius Black’s or Dumbledore’s. What left me totally cold were the deaths of Dobby and Hedwig. Still don’t give a shit (sorry)

Lastly (and this is really bloody niche), still not over Fred’s death in the “ruby in the smoke” series. Philip Pullman caused me a lot of heartache as a child

Emma Morley in One Day. I cried for days!

Strong agree with Leslie in Terabithia and Beth too.

I can't even remember the name of the book but the main character had v little money and was cold so she ran a hot bath for her and her newborn baby, and accidentally fell asleep. The baby drowned. I didn't have kids at the time when I read it but it's a fictional event which pops unannounced into my brain far too often. Hits even harder now I'm a parent. Likewise the Irish mum and the little kids in titanic.

Nancy in Oliver
Brooks from Shawshank
Mufasa

labtest57 · 14/11/2025 20:15

Forgot to add Matthew from Anne of Green Gables

For some reason when I was a kid I watched the King and I on VHS at my nana’s house. I managed to hold it together for the rest of the day and then after going to bed stayed up a while to cry my eyes out. Was Yul Bruner any good in the role? (I’m 37 so it was a while ago). I guess he must have been.

Agree with others about Zach and baby Trudy from Goodnight Mr Tom.

Plato, from Rebel Without a Cause—perhaps unforgettable because of its eerie foreshadowing of James Dean’s own fate, a life cut short and left unrealised.

Most of all: Yuri Zhivago. That one is a choker.

Arh, I loved the King and I as a child, also influenced by my grandmother! Yul Bryner was great!

I went to the revival at The London Palladium as a young adult with my mum and grandad - my granny had sadly died by then. It was totally amazing and Lady Thiang's rendition of Something Wonderful was a real tear jerker.

Oh my god I’ve forgotten two major ones - Lupin and Tonks in HP. Just SO UNNECESSARY

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 14/11/2025 20:17

Many of mine have been mentioned (never got over Bambis mum, had to be removed from the cinema by my mum TWICE)
But Michael from Prison Break also stands out. I wept buckets for that man. Then they BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LIFE!!! raging!!!!

Gcsunnyside23 · 14/11/2025 20:18

Chris from skins, Mark Greene in ER, George from Grey's anatomy 😭 Glenn from the walking dead
Actually there's loads more but these always stand out. I think must of the Harry potter deaths too

Sirius Black. It's been 22 years and I'm still not over it!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 14/11/2025 20:20

So many deaths in ER but the one I've never been able to rewatch is Greg Pratt's. The way a tear rolls down his cheek as he realises he's going to die is heartbreakingly sad.
