Another vote for The Ghost and Mrs Muir.. absolutely amazing,
Rear window also .. black and white vision makes these movies so atmospheric

Powell and Pressburgers WW11 epic A matter of life and death. There is some technicolour at key moments tho
Beautiful haunting meditation on mortality grief and the mystery of love that can conquer all
Some scenes are rendered to allow us to imagine the terrible loss of young life that generation faced . Yet there is humor and a love story. I must have watched this movie 10 times and each time I interpret it differently
Oh and did I mention it has David Niven as the ultimate handsome brave and stoic airman? Sigh
Highly recommend

This x a million . My all time favourite movie.

Kind of Loving is another one

I like the social history aspect and love the writing of Stan Barstow

I've never seen 'The Lady Vanishes', but have read the novel it was based on, 'The Wheel Spins' by Ethel Lina White. I'll stick that one on my own list!

For me this would include:

Most work by Eisenstein or G W Pabst, especially Secrets of a Soul
Cabinet of Dr Caligari
Big yes to The Maltese Falcon
The Prowler
Borderline (the 1930 one)
Metropolis
Julie (Doris Day film)

I was going to say This Happy Breed, but just checked and it's in colour. Worth watching, though.

Think most of mine have been mentioned -
Casablanca, The Third Man, Great Expectations etc.

Almost anything with Bette Davis or Humphrey Bogart
Stagecoach - John Wayne's first major starring role and an absolute classic of the genre.
The Blue Lamp - another classic.
Pimpernel Smith with Leslie Howard - updated version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, in which LH starred.
Night train to Munich - similar premise, with Rex Harrison.
Millions Like Us, film about women in WW2
The Gentle Sex - docudrama narrated by Leslie Howard, also about women in WW2.
The Way to the Stars - in which John Mills recites 'For Johnny'.
Dambusters

Yield to the Night. Diana Dors is incredible in it. A criminally underrated actor.

4catsaremylife · 28/10/2024 02:44

Any of the Ealing films, and the ghost and Mrs Muir are my favourites. I also like the 60s films kitchen sink dramas I think they were called.

One of the few 100% films on RottenTomatoes. And so well deserved.
