Some great suggestions here. I second Brief Encounter, the Ealing comedies, the St Trinians films and Rebecca. My personal favourite, which has been mentioned somewhere up the thread, is Random Harvest with Greer Garson and Ronald Colman. Sentimental, but just lovely. Make sure you have a box of tissues at the ready!

The Lady Vanishes and Rebecca, both Hitchcock

Oh I LOVE the Lady Vanishes! It reminds me of my dad as he loved cricket and the two English men make me laugh, a great film though.

I’ve not read through, but my vote goes to It’s a Wonderful Life. Best. Film. Ever.
Also love the 39 steps.
I love trawling You Tube for old films noir and some great old British comedies.

DareDevil223 · 12/10/2024 14:04

Some fabulous films on here. Some of my faves are:
12 Angry Men
The Bishop's Wife
His Girl Friday - actually pretty much any B&W film starring Cary Grant
Laura
Night of the Demon
While the City Sleeps ( love Dana Andrews)
The 39 Steps
Ministry of Fear
Jigsaw (fantastic British film directed by Val Guest )
Citizen Kane
Touch of Evil
Dead of Night

If you're up for subtitles then:

Wages of Fear
La Grande Illusion
Riffifi
High and Low

I could go on all day Grin
