Have you ever seen the British film The Small Back Room? It's by Powell and Pressburger and also features an alcoholic. I noticed a theme...

A Tale of Two Cities, with Dirk Bogarde

Lincslady53 · 29/11/2024 21:13

I saw a film many years ago that has stuck with me and bought it on dvd. Just checked and seen that the whole film is on youtube. A Bucket of Blood is a comedy horror film featuring beat poets. Artists, posers and murders.

It’s a modern film, but is black and white:
Dead men don’t wear plaid

its a Steve Martin comedy, fashioned out of lots of scenes from old b&w movies.

Woman of the Year - Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn
The Long Memory -John Mills, Elizabeth Sellars, Geoffrey Kean. Wonderful location shots of derelict barges Thames Estuary and London of the 1950s/60s.

Newusernameforthiss · 30/11/2024 18:18

All the Ealing comedies
His Girl Friday
Some like it hot
The artist (won the oscar in 2010 or something, so good, Jean Dujardin is in it)

MissRoseDurward · 30/11/2024 18:56

The Long Memory -John Mills, Elizabeth Sellars, Geoffrey Kean. Wonderful location shots of derelict barges Thames Estuary and London of the 1950s/60s.

Any film set in postwar London is worth watching, regardless of plot or acting, because of the locations, with all the bomb damage still visible (there's always a scene with children playing on a bombsite), and buildngs that are long gone.

Which reminds me - Hue and Cry - 1947 film, Alastair Sim and Jack Warner - children in pursuit of a gang of crooks. Great fun, and suitable for family viewing - you'd need to give appropriate explanations of the historical background.

And has anyone mentioned The Blue Lamp? (Possibly I did myself, and have forgotten). First major role for Dirk Bogarde, first appearance of George Dixon.

Sleepyquest · 30/11/2024 18:59

To kill a mockingbird of course

We are kindred spirits! I love Hue and Cry. Alistair Sim + London = unmissable.

My favourites are Some Like it Hot and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

I'd forgotten about it, until this thread reminded me. Must go and see if it's on YouTube.

(And I see I did mention The Blue Lamp, several weeks ago.)

Roman holiday

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 01/12/2024 00:31

A couple of people have listed Metropolis, almost in passing.

It's a lot older than most of the classics mentioned, 1927, silent, stunning and disturbing.

TanteRose · 01/12/2024 01:09

some of my favourite films ever have already been mentioned (Some Like It Hot, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, etc)

another one is Now, Voyager (Bette Davis)

much more recent is the B&W version of the Oscar winning Korean film Parasite

Cinephile’s treat or ticket-peddling gimmick? Either way, this monochrome edition puts the masterful satire in a new light
