Couldn't see a thread, is anyone else looking forward to watching this?

It sounds a bit of an odd premise but seems to be getting good reviews so far.

In cinemas from this coming Friday..

Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal

OP posts:

We're booked in for mid weekm. Initially didn't clock the premise - saw a trailer, paying half attention, liked it's vibe, have a 6 month pass... But read it earlier and I'm really intrigued

EmmaEmerald · 22/01/2024 22:07

I was really excited... but it looks like it's not on at my nearest cinema. I wonder if there's any chance of it being added, I'll see if online chat can tell me tomorrow.

It seems it might be on a streaming service within a month or so, so possibly better for me to do that and save the travel hassle and money to try to see it elsewhere. Trains are dire round my way at the mo.

I'm surprised because the nearest one is screening Andrew Scott's Vanya, in more than one screen!

We have Vanya on once a day but for five days. It's Def getting good coverage. unsure if to see it tho. We were late getting the Holdovers on tho.

Yes I reckon it's one of those you won't lose anything from by watching at home, they all stream so quickly these days. Need to stream Killer Moon movie with DiCaprio

EmmaEmerald · 23/01/2024 00:46

I've just checked in case there was a midnight refresh on the local cinema page, and there was!

We do have it! Happy dance! 🥰

i thought it was a bit odd, nothing was listed for the weekend except Dear England! I always find the website a bit nuts.

so yes OP, I am now really looking forward to this!

Epli · 23/01/2024 14:43

Seeing this on Friday. I am super excited.

Epli · 26/01/2024 17:19

Back form the cinema: it's terrific. Acting is just superb Scott and Mescal are impressive enough but OMG Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. It's a beautifully crafted movie with beautiful soundtrack that serves as an additional commentary.

Mary46 · 26/01/2024 21:34

It was very good its moving in parts. Saw it today

EmmaEmerald · 27/01/2024 18:09

Just emerged. That’s a great film but actually too sad. I found it really depressing. I’d say maybe don’t see it if you’re feeling low. It has great beauty but I’m feeling quite shocked and depressed!

I know some people found Saltburn like that but I didn’t. Maybe this is too real?

biscuitnut · 27/01/2024 18:14

I have read the book it was based upon. Strangers by Taichi Yamada. It’s one of my favourite books. I can’t wait to see the film!!

EmmaEmerald · 27/01/2024 18:20

I wonder if they changed it

im just looking at interpretations online and I think there’s less depressing ones than what I made of it. Marginally!

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/01/2024 18:21

Omg what a film! Andrew Scott is sooooo bloody good in it 🥰🥰 and I only truly appreciated how very handsome he is.. but jeez… that triggered the crap out of me having lost my mum when I was 11…. I cried half way in until the end and sobbed in the car after.. 💔💔💔 i still feel so very sad today… but it truly is an exceptional film 🥰🥰 and like another poster said… soundtrack is right up my street 🥰 If you’ve lost a parent as a child.. I’d be wary about going, I’ve told my sister to steer clear.. if you haven’t… I’d still take tissues 😪

EmmaEmerald · 27/01/2024 18:38

@Dontsayyouloveme I can't imagine what that was like for you. Do you want hugs? I don't care how unMNetty that is.

I was advised to take tissues but jeez, I was not prepared. I heard a lot of sniffling and I got the feeling we were all blindsided at the end.

SausagesSausagesAndMoreSausages · 27/01/2024 20:39

Just seen it. As I have PTSD and in trauma therapy, and struggling with my relationships with my mum (dementia) and adult daughter (troubled), it was just too much.

But, I could appreciate that it is an exceptionally good film with amazing performances. Just avoid it if you’re not feeling emotionally robust!

Going to escape back into the bonkers arms of Poor Things tomorrow 🤪

myphoneisbroken · 27/01/2024 20:43

I found it too sad - I just thought they took it too far at the end. Yes it is a film about grief, but I thought the ending was gratuitous. Such a shame as the performances were amazing, and I loved the relationship between Andrew Scott and his parents.

@Dontsayyouloveme That must have been such a hard watch for you. I hope you are feeling ok.

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/01/2024 20:46

EmmaEmerald it was a v v tough watch..resonated in every way.. the part when he and his mum were chatting lying in bed and she said .. ‘are you ok?’ And he said, as an adult, ‘no’ 😓😓😓💔 I knew he was going to say no, it would be my answer answer too 😔😔😔 .. hugs very welcome.. I believe some mumsnetters do give them out 😁. Thank you 🥰.

Oh totally blindsided, shocked, my head was mashed..

Fantastic cast and such great production…. 🥰🥰

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/01/2024 20:51

myphoneisbroken thank you… not great tbh.. it’s reached so deep 💔 .but it’ll ease as always does

Thing is.. I went to see it, purely for the cast.. I knew nothing about it.. which is unusual for me… ! I partner asked me in the way there, what it was about.. I said I’ve no idea.. I’m going for the actors.. I won’t do that again 🤦🏻‍♀️

myphoneisbroken · 27/01/2024 20:53

@Dontsayyouloveme You poor thing - what a shock for you. Go gently on yourself - it must have brought up so much for you xxx

I though the ending was great. It shows how our own grief isolates us and can make us blind to others crying for help and connection.

EmmaEmerald · 27/01/2024 21:48

@Dontsayyouloveme hugs, hugs, all the hugs.

EmmaEmerald · 27/01/2024 21:50

I've started a spoiler thread.

I'm really sorry it's affected people so much. Honestly I've been sitting here feeling dreadful but I rang my ex. Luckily he was home. He is a reminder of the beauty of love but I felt like it's not enough to - redeem? - this film, showing how beautiful love is.

He let me talk about it for 45 mins or so and then moved me on to practical stuff, which is good. I had a nervous breakdown last year and he looked after me. I left him for many reasons but one factor is that he is young, and I didn't really see how we could carry on without it having a negative impact on him.

That theme is possibly present here - Adam's pain was more than Harry could cope with?

But I have found out there's other interpretations which change the film entirely.

Spoiler thread here if anyone's interested - the other theories might stop some of us crying into our milkshakes!

You haven't said any spoilers? The info on the main subject is in all the publicity and trailer, it's the end that's a spoiler.

I'm so sorry you didn't know.

Dontsayyouloveme · 27/01/2024 22:42

Oh 🤦🏻‍♀️😬 not thinking straight! I thought my comment about with some dialogue in was a ‘spoiler’ . Lol. bedtime I think 😀

AceofPentacles · 28/01/2024 08:54

Saw it last night and agree it was excellently done, but intensly sad and depressing. Interestingly I went with DP who has experienced losses and he thought it was a happy ending (love & hope etc)

Interesting
I can't see that at all but really hoping someone will look at my spoiler thread because I think most posters haven't thought of what's being said about it.... <waits hopefully>

It's being marketed completely differently in some other countries, there's a key word concept that I wish I'd known before seeing it....
