Couldn't see a thread, is anyone else looking forward to watching this?

It sounds a bit of an odd premise but seems to be getting good reviews so far.

In cinemas from this coming Friday..

Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal

I commented on the other thread. I lost my parents at a young age and it really resonated with me. It did hit me quite hard. The scene in the diner was very moving. There was a lot of love in the film though. I watched it with a friend and we discussed our bereavements and grief on the train home and both had a little cry.
Andrew Scott was soooo good in it!

Theatrefan12 · 28/01/2024 21:22

I was really looking forward to this from seeing the trailers for what felt like weeks, but both my friend and I came out with a well that was a waste of two hours feeling. I am the first one to cry at a film but this one just didn’t get me I’m afraid

Maybe it was the style and so deliberate, but it just felt slow and I kept waiting for something to happen which never did

For those that did feel something from it I hope you are not too upset

westisbest1982 · 04/02/2024 20:41

I have to say that I wasn't really as moved as I'd hoped, despite the parallels in my own life as those of the Andrew Scott character. But it was watchable and I absolutely loved Claire Foy in this.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2024 20:49

I want to see this as it was filmed in the village/suburb I lived in as a child!

JoanThursday1972 · 04/02/2024 21:43

I went to see it this afternoon and thought it was outstanding. All the actors (all four!) were just fantastic. It really made me think.

Andrew Scott looks like Barry Grant from Brookside.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 05/02/2024 23:02

Been to see it tonight. Felt like I needed to sit for 10 minutes at the end and compose myself, and then go home and sob into a pillow for an hour. It hit on so many levels - as a parent of a gay child, as a child of parents that aren’t emotionally effusive, as someone who can feel very alone, and thinking of close relatives who lost a parent at a young age.

Performances incredible. Saw the ending coming but didn’t lessen the impact for me. I’d love to watch it again but think the emotion might be more overwhelming a second time around.

And, on a purely shallow level, I could watch Paul Mescal kissing Andrew Scott for quite some time 😬

I felt very similar, it just didn't get me and it felt quite slow.

While this sounds contradictory to what I've said about it not getting me, I also found it too sad and depressing. To try and explain that contradiction - It didn't make me cry, it wasn't a tear jerker, but it felt like I'd watched something slow, bleak and hopeless.

I couldn't see the entertainment value. Just miserable, slow and sad, but not enjoyably sad.

i want to see it, big andrew scott fan

ChristmasTreeMagic · 07/02/2024 11:06

I've seen it twice now & loved it even more the second time. I saw it in a film festival first time & then went to the cinema over the weekend.

I thought it was a truly moving & affecting film. I cried each time. Andrew Scott & Pal Mescal were outstanding. All 4 actors were fantastic.

This is my era - a teen in the 80s. The attention to detail in the sets / music etc were so good.

I can't believe anyone could sit through that & not find it emotional 😢

He's fantastic. I love him in everything I've seen him in. He just conveys emotion so well.

An absolute masterpiece. Fantastic acting, beautiful, moving. I thought it was faultless. I feel wrung out from crying and some hours later I am still thinking about it. Do not miss this film on the big screen it is absolutely outstanding

Willmafrockfit · 10/02/2024 20:43

enjoyed it so much

westisbest1982 · 11/02/2024 19:06

I just realised this is from the same writer who wrote 45 Years and Weekend. I thought the scene with Andrew Scott and Jamie Bell was poignant, but otherwise I don’t think Andrew Haigh generally knows how to write emotional scenes. I felt similarly detached whilst watching those other two films of his.

westisbest1982 · 12/03/2024 16:52

Just thought I’d mention this came out on digital release today.

Willmafrockfit · 12/03/2024 20:00

Oh good news

covetingthepreciousthings · 13/03/2024 08:27

Bit late to this one, but finally got round to seeing it. What a beautiful film, really loved it but found it heartbreaking.

All the characters were so well played.

Loved the soundtrack too.

I didn't care for this.

I'm so over Andrew Scott. I know people adore him, but he gives me the 'ick' (dislike that term, but it describes how I feel perfectly) and more so in this film than in other things I've seen him in.

I personally thought the ending was good - but I thought it was clear what had happened - the bottle was the thing that gave it away - but so many people seem to be confused by it that I'm not sure if I'm right. But the dynamic between AS and his parents just didn't work for me, and that made up a huge chunk of the film.

I accept I seem to be in a minority though.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 13/03/2024 22:51

On Disney+ from 20 March.

fretaway · 03/05/2024 12:38

Just watched this and I thought it was brilliant. It was sad but i didn't think it was depressing or bleak. The whole cast acted beautifully and especially Andrew Scott - the way his demeanour changed to a child with his parents and the chemistry with Paul Mescal...just fantastic.

And loved the soundtrack.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 03/05/2024 15:30

I’ve watched it twice now, and would again! I also listened to Power of Love on repeat for about an hour after my second viewing. It’s just a really great film.

I don't blame you. It needs to be watched at least twice
