Anyone planning on seeing this when it comes out on 21st July?

I'm looking forward to a fascinating exploration of the life of the atom bomb inventor gazing at Cillian Murphy for 3 hours.

Some recent promotional stills. The horse riding one gives off Peaky vibes!

I saw it last night and loved it! Really well-acted by everyone and I like that the focus was primarily on Oppenheimer rather than the bomb. Three hours was a bit long for me but that is probably just me. Even so, it went by quickly for such a long film.

Puppyseahorse · 22/07/2023 21:19

Was anyone else annoyed by Oppenheimer saying his most famous line over a backdrop of Florence Pugh’s boobs?

Why would it annoy someone? Genuine question, not goady.

sashagabadon · 22/07/2023 21:25

I’m not entirely sure why Florence Pugh had to be naked quite so much either. Emily blunt wasn’t once!
it was good film. I enjoyed it but half hour too long.
saw mission impossible today too and that was fun.

Pineappletart7 · 22/07/2023 21:29

I saw it today and didn’t enjoy it. I can appreciate the great acting and cinematography but it was too long and such a slow burn

KnottyKnitting · 22/07/2023 21:40

Well I saw the first two hours today. It got to the bit where the first bomb was being tested and the fire alarm went off...

We waited 25 mins before we were able to go back in and then they told us they were unable to show the rest and told us we would get a refund.

Great so now I either have to wait for it to come on the TV or sit through the first 2 hours again ( and yes I agree that it is quite slow)

Puppyseahorse · 22/07/2023 21:49

@tweener gratuitous nudity (always of women, almost never men) is pretty irritating at the best of times, and at that moment it trivialised the quote

It's a fair point. My takeaway from the scene was that Oppenheimer wasn't good enough as "himself" to satisfy Florence's character. She needed him to impress her with the reading Sanskrit/reciting the quote in order to be fulfilled by him, I think it almost showed her as the more powerful of the two in the scene.

Loved it.

Well everything. Great cast . Hello Tom Conti as Albert Eisenstein.
Matt Damon was amazing. Robert Downey. Everyone actually.

Such a fascinating story. Want to read the book now.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2023 22:09

It's going to be Oscars galore.

Steelasprey · 22/07/2023 22:13

I agree…
it does take that oppenheimertunity (sorry)
I felt like I’d been punched with the last line

Prrambulate · 22/07/2023 22:16

@tweener Partly agree. I guess one interpretation is that it's foreshadowing Oppenheimer's feeling of guilt/responsibility for Tatlock's death, whether by suicide or more conspiratorially, by government agents due to his tryst with her.

Best supporting for RDJr for sure 👌🏻

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2023 22:24

Not sure why Florence P was boobs out other than they were having sex. And one scene was post sex. Was it crucial ? Don't know , but it worked. And certainly emphasised the passionate , destructive nature of the relationship.

The 'Destroyer of worlds' was a bit of a foreshadowing of what was to come. Destroying her and the inevitable nuclear destruction to come.

A very interesting take! :)

Would anyone let their 13 year old DC see this? Mine wants to after all the hype but not sure it's appropriate.

It's a 15, they wouldn't be allowed in to watch it at a cinema surely?

Personally I wouldn’t. The sex scenes are explicit but fairly short at least.

But it is also a very long film that’s quite difficult to follow, I think they’d find it boring even if you thought the explicit scenes were okay.

I think it might be a 15 anyway.

PermanentTemporary · 22/07/2023 22:42

I wouldn't, but I'm much stricter about age restrictions than most parents. I think it is a complex, painful, adult film that is about destruction, war, politics and whether we can achieve peace. There are lots of films that are suitable for his age group but imo this isn't one of them.

whatafaf · 22/07/2023 23:06

@tweener I would have passed for 15 but not sure DC would though do they really look if the ticket has been bought at a machine?

whatafaf · 22/07/2023 23:09

@PinkFrogss thanks. We've said no on this basis though going by information online as not seen it ourselves. DC's friend has permission which doesn't help. Shame it's just a few scenes that are doing it especially if they weren't necessary.

whatafaf · 22/07/2023 23:12

@PermanentTemporary thanks. I try to take each film/ show individually. I'm feeling bad though which I know I shouldn't and can't really explain.

I was ID'd in my early 20s for an 18 film when you get to the person who checks your ticket before you go in, not sure if that's particularly common, especially nowadays. But theoretically there must be a process in place otherwise they'd risk 16 and 17 year olds easily getting into 18 movies having bought tickets at a machine.

Meltinthemiddle · 23/07/2023 00:19

Just saw this today, great cast but found it very difficult to follow. Really didn't enjoy it at all and not what I was expecting.

Even when scanning just a phone he etc, they always note what movie it is as they tell you the screen so would Def have it on their head to ID anyone who looks young.

It might have got the 15rating for Florence's breasts but even without that wouldn't. There's some stuff about the after effects of the bomb, it's a complicated storyline and it's a fairly slow 3 hours (unlike a Marvel 3 hours where it's more action packed)
