I saw this last night. I wouldn't say it was the best thriller I've ever seen but it was a bit different and had lots of unexpected twists. Quite a departure for Hugh Bonneville!

Anyone else watched it?

I watched it and was gripped from the beginning. I was really mad when the masseuse got back in his car though but I guess not wanting to be deported was more important.

Such an awful choice, or no choice when you think about it, really. Be deported to an uncertain fate in Iran or go with Hector and face an equally uncertain fate.

@KillingMeDeftly yea definitely a rock and a hard place decision. Poor guy. Now he has no life at all

Can anyone tell me this?

When Toby rang the police to say that there was a prisoner, surely he would have said, there's a prisoner in the basement behind a shelving unit and behind a door?

Why would he ring the police and say there's a prisoner but not say exactly where, in a huge bloody house with a basement?

Then the whole film could have been shorter?!

Thatboymum · 04/09/2022 22:25

I thought it was one of the worst things I had watched in a while , really didn’t get the hype about it . And I’m still confused about the last man he kept. The ending was too abrupt too

stillvicarinatutu · 04/09/2022 22:28

I watched it last night

Really enjoyed it and had a very satisfying ending!

That is a really good point!

He was clearly afraid of calling the cops, given his stance on society and the reason he was in the house in the first place. Maybe he was in such a state he just quickly gave the address and said there was a prisoner there, and he thought they'd look into it properly. The first time they came they only gave a cursory look... Ditto when they didn't notice the envelope had old boy monster's name and address on it when they gave Jay his possessions back...

it was nonsense but enjoyable
yes of course toby could have given more details but then what?

Vecnasnurse · 05/09/2022 07:11

I thought it was rubbish! Shame because the plot was good and had some good actors it. Badly written or directed maybe.

Deadringer · 05/09/2022 10:47

I am not sure that it's the type of film that stands up to a lot of scrutiny, but for me anyway it was very enjoyable, if enjoyable is a word that can be used in the circumstances.

hewouldwouldnthe · 05/09/2022 10:53

Pretty far fetched, but watchable and scary. Realised jay was dead when the cellar was empty. No where else to hide him and no point when you're a bonkers psychopath

Passtheduchyonthelefthandside · 05/09/2022 22:32

Watched it tonight, enjoyed it. Odd seeing Hugh so evil.

Have to agree. only watched half so far. The only inventive bit is where he whispered to the police office...

I really hope they are not going to let him keep looking after that bear, when he is so cruel to people!

Italiangreyhound · 05/09/2022 23:58

police officer

MistressIggi · 06/09/2022 00:05

I think he did give more detail.. I'm sure when the house came up on the police's radar the second time, one cop said about there being a report of someone in the basement. I think it just wasn't checked because, ex judge and all that.

the baby was 6-7 months old, not one year

Was that to me ? If so I calculated from the gf being pregnant and telling her family at circa 3 months, to the baby sitting up at about 6 months. Makes a year

NotEnoughTime · 07/09/2022 22:10

A chill ran down my spine when he whispered to the DS.

His whole face and mannerism changed so quickly it gave me the creeps.

Whatever would Paddington have said? Grin

Astounding · 07/09/2022 22:13

I’ve just finished watching. At the end when Jay leaves HB beaten and bound up and let’s his captive out, what then happens to Jay? Will he be arrested or would this be self defence while bringing a murderer to justice and releasing his captive.

Mooserp · 07/09/2022 22:30

I liked the first half, although I feel sure I've seen something similar before.

The end was rather abrupt and a bit of an anti climax I thought.

"...although I feel sure I've seen something similar before."

I was thinking that.

TrashPandas · 07/09/2022 23:46

I enjoyed it and think it's worth a watch, but thought the pacing was off, and having two point of view changes didn't help. I was also underwhelmed by the ending.

It felt like it was made by a writer still finding their feet but with a lot of potential.

Italiangreyhound · 07/09/2022 23:51

I think it sounds like 'Bad Samaritan'.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/09/2022 07:01

jay drove off crying

Yes! Thanks, that's the one I was thinking of.

I totally agree

Crappydoo · 08/09/2022 22:42

I've just watched it and I hated it! I persevered because my partner recommended it and I felt really bad. A million plot holes, average acting, and very little character development. I really wanted to like it but I didn't. I think I'm in the minority though so maybe it's just me!
