I saw this last night. I wouldn't say it was the best thriller I've ever seen but it was a bit different and had lots of unexpected twists. Quite a departure for Hugh Bonneville!

Anyone else watched it?

I watched it this morning.

I think it was probably more sinister that it wasn't just a bloodfest, and (aside from the masseuse) I was never 100% sure who he murdered until the end.

The ending was satisfying.

MistressIggi · 03/09/2022 16:53

There's no way I'm going back to look, but if the guy who got released at the end was the man we saw originally in the cellar, then he would be able to tell police about the murders.
i was screaming at the tv to tell the massage man not to get into the car Blush

I got really annoyed at him. I started off with a gentle "don't do it" 10 seconds later I was shouting "DON'T FUCKING DO IT" then he got in and I threw my hands up "Fucking idiot, you're dead now".

I did think the last guy was the original guy, but where did he go during the police raid? How did he get transported to the new house?

Deadringer · 03/09/2022 19:11

I think he was another man similar in looks to the first, anything else doesn't really make sense.

lazymum99 · 03/09/2022 22:04

I just finished watching this. Made me jump a good few times. Bit far fetched but kept me on edge of my seat

Samcro · 03/09/2022 22:21

Omg that reminded me of Hitchcock type films
was so shocked that Toby was gone so soon
poor Lizzie
don’t think cellar guy was the same one, he picked on vulnerable people that looked like his fathers lover.

EeeByeGummieBear · 03/09/2022 22:33

I just watched it- thought it was the same guy at the end, but that wouldn't make sense. Why kill everyone else and not him? Given Hugh was so evil? I hope it was the same guy so he can provide evidence, but as pp say, I don't want to go back to check!
The poor guy from the gym- how frightened he must have been about his asylum application being rejected and what he would face as a gay man having to go back to his home country, to get in the car.
I loved the smile on the face of the policewoman at the end.

MessyBunPersonified · 03/09/2022 23:16

I just checked, its not the same guy at the end of the film.

HowzAboutIt · 03/09/2022 23:34

Thought the timeline was odd. The police seemed to do nothing - no forensics in the basement when the policewoman sussed about the spy hole. Just accepted Toby had disappeared.

And did no one report the mum missing? It all kicked off when the friend's GF was just pregnant and the mum (Kelly MacDonald) sat outside HB's house until she got kidnapped - the baby was sitting up so probably 12 months had passed.

Did the police not see the link between Toby's friend being picked up outside HB's place when he was "sleeping" there in his car, and him having a letter in his possession addressed to HB that he had taken ?

Why was Toby's friend so scared to go to the police about KM's disappearance?

If HB was so buddy buddy with the Chief of Police, why did HB not report her in all that time, just sitting outside his house?

Was the house HB was attacked in at the end his childhood home?

Loved the cast but too many odd things not explained spoilt it for me a bit.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/09/2022 23:36

Ah I didn't like the smile by police woman and was very upset for jay and his mum but I like the graffiti - it was an enjoyable film

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 06:27

toby's friend was too scared because he didnt want to gt into trouble as his gf was pregnant, i dont think the police noticed who the letter was addressed to

KillingMeDeftly · 04/09/2022 07:09

Jay was also a young Black man who'd done time behind bars already. Chances of the police believing him were slim to none, especially as Hector was buddies with one of the cops at the top.

@MessyBunPersonified thanks for checking!

milkyaqua · 04/09/2022 08:02

Well, for what it's worth, I also checked and it is the same prisoner as at the start! There is also only one of them in the credits: "Said (prisoner)" - played by Tarik Badwan.

I expect he just shifted him to the country house when things got a bit hot with the police sniffing about.

It was certainly a vivid and haunting movie. One of the first in ages that felt like a proper movie. Can't stop thinking about it...

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 08:36

the baby was 6-7 months old, not one year

Hotelhelp · 04/09/2022 08:42

I wonder what the point of him having a wife in an ‘asylum’ was?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 08:42

he sent her mad!?

Hotelhelp · 04/09/2022 08:45

Yes it must have been that. And he obviously wasn’t openly gay.

For anyone who enjoyed this I recommend Get Out if you haven’t seen it.

KillingMeDeftly · 04/09/2022 10:18

It was quite clever how they showed Sir Hector chopping up and incinerating the cricket bat and then flushing the ashes down the toilet. I assumed it was just him destroying evidence of the weapon. It was quite a gut punch to learn that it wasn't just the remnants of the bat that he flushed away.

Deadringer · 04/09/2022 10:53

Not sure if they used the same actor twice but according to this article it was a different prisoner at the end.

Yes! And the fact you realised he'd likely killed him immediately with the poor prisoner fellow having to watch. God you'd be traumatised beyond words by the team the police finally clicked on

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 04/09/2022 11:57

I've realised why I found it so awful ... once he'd captured Toby then his mum he would have killed them straight away ...there was never going to be a chance for them to try and escape. H was so clinical about it. You don't expect the main characters to meet their doom so quickly with no messing especially when they are fairly famous faces.

On a side note KM is one of those actresses I've always struggled to warm too but I really liked her in this. It was interesting to see her playing a mum I thought.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 12:02

i didnt realise until the end that both were dead, or for sure that toby was dead

stopitleaveitgetdown · 04/09/2022 12:09

I watched it and was gripped from the beginning. I was really mad when the masseuse got back in his car though but I guess not wanting to be deported was more important.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 12:14

i was glad tbh that it wasnt too long a film
