I'm English, so by that I mean films not in English Grin

Just watched a brilliant film. The Invisible Guest on Netflix. Psychological-thriller, very, very clever plot. Spanish film and there's no English audio so you have to watch it with subtitles (unless you're fluent in Spanish or some other european languages that are available).

Haven't really watched any subtitled films over the last decade so there must be some recent blinders that I've missed.

Any recommendations please?

Just remembered Spoorloos - 1988. Creepy as fuck, was remade as The Vanishing with Kiefer Sutherland but the original is so good/ horrible.

Never Look Away....a German masterpiece spanning the Nazi and GDR era from the director of Lives of Others. The music is beautiful and the ending will stay with me for a long time.Long but worth it!

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 08/10/2021 22:12

I second Lupin with Omar Sy. He also did a really brilliant film called Samba which is def worth watching.
There's an oldish film called Mediterraneo about italian soldiers stranded on a greek island in ww2 which is a must see.

strelitzialady · 08/10/2021 22:16

So many good films here!

Could I add Sin Nombre - Spanish language film set in Honduras and Mexico about immigrants trying to reach the US. Violent and sad, but unforgettable

Amboseli · 08/10/2021 22:20

All of these sound great, I love foreign films (with subtitles).

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 08/10/2021 22:27

@Yutes

Volver (Spanish language) And Cronos 1993 (Spanish language)
And Butterfly Tongue (la lengua de las mariposas) set during the Civil War
ACatCalledPuss · 15/10/2021 23:56

I love the three colours trilogy. All in French except for the second "three colours white", which is a mix of French and Polish. Can be watched as a trilogy or separately. Three colours blue is the first one.

headlock · 15/10/2021 23:58

The motorcycle diaries. Excellent film. Also shoplifters.
Amelie is an all time favourite.

headlock · 15/10/2021 23:59

The counterfitters

Les Intolerables. Fabulous, uplifting, restores your faith.

IamAporcupine · 16/10/2021 00:09

@MagpieCastle

Wim Wenders ‘Wings of desire’ (German). B/w 1987. Wonderful.
Not many people like it but it's one my favorites.
ChristieMalry · 16/10/2021 00:10

I love Volver. And City Of Lost Children.

I watched a tonne of French films in the 90s same as everyone else did. UN coeur en hiver I remember liking but haven't seen it since. I did re-watch Harry, He's Here To Help recently and it's still as good. Agree with lots of others suggested here too, but ffs don't watch Come And See. Well I mean it's a great film and all but it's a bit fucking extreme.

Oops, yes, quite right. I posted Les Intolerables. Meant Untouchables.
