I'm English, so by that I mean films not in English Grin

Just watched a brilliant film. The Invisible Guest on Netflix. Psychological-thriller, very, very clever plot. Spanish film and there's no English audio so you have to watch it with subtitles (unless you're fluent in Spanish or some other european languages that are available).

Haven't really watched any subtitled films over the last decade so there must be some recent blinders that I've missed.

Any recommendations please?

Shall We Dance (which I was horrified to find dates from 1996!) I’m so old A lovely gentle Japanese film which was remade in 2004 with Richard Gere. The remake is ok but not as good as the original.

Another vote for Life is Beautiful, one of my top 5 films

Also the French versions of the Birdcage (La Cage aux Folles) and Dinner for Schmucks (Le Dîner de Cons) - 100 x better than the American versions

Run Lola Run (German) is also good.

I’m interested in watching some Bollywood films @Phonelightmidnight. Any suggestions?

The Fast Runner - it's in Inuit (?) but don't let that put you off.
If you want a tv series, Shtisel is the best thing I've watched in a decade. It will probably make you cry though!

How It Is In Heaven. Think it's Norwegian

The Lives of Others is one of the best films I've ever seen. Cinema Paradiso was also fantastic but I see they have both being mentioned already.

I have a soft spot for City of Lost Children, although I'm not sure it was critically acclaimed when it came out - it is an odd film by the team behind Amelie, set in a kind of vintage dystopia, where a mad scientist, aging prematurely due to his inability to dream, kidnaps children from a nearby city to steal their dreams... as you do.

Anyway it was weird and wonderful and I loved it!

If you can find it Tous les Matins du Monde is a lovely film and worth it for the sound track if you do find it do let me know where as DD would love to watch it....

There was a very cinematic French language version of The COunt of Monte Christo on television a few years ago starring Gerard Depardieu which I enjoyed too.

The funniest one was watching the classic Mary Poppins in Italian as it was one of the language on options on the DVD - my DC were attending an Italian nursery at the time and they loved it...

The Invisible Guest on Netflix. Psychological-thriller, very, very clever plot.
Absolutely agree - a fabulous film. Mario Casas is a superb actor (and very easy on the eye!) He appears in a few other films/series on Netflix:
The Photographer of Mauthausen (set in a Nazi concentration camp)
The Occupant (psychological thriller)
The Innocent (series)

A few that I have seen on iplayer (not sure if they are still available);
Julieta (Spanish)
Marguerite (French - inspired by the Meryl Streep movie Florence Foster Jenkins)

Do you have Amazon Prime? I have loved a few Scandi films on there:
A Man Called Ove
The Birdcatcher
In Order of Disappearance (bloodthirsty but very entertaining. Not currently available for free but will, no doubt, become so again.)

Not a movie but I do hope you have seen the (2) series Lupin on Netflix? Omar Sy is an excellent actor. He also stars in the film The Intouchables as a carer to a quadriplegic man.

Finally The Day Will Come (on Netflix I think. Harrowing account of the experiences of two young boys sent to a Danish children's home in the 1960s.

Another vote for The Lives of Others. Worth seeing anything directed by Mia Hansen-Love or the Dardenne Brothers.

Balloon. About a family trying to escape from East Germany in a hot air balloon. Brilliant and lots of nail-biting tense moments.

Fere · 01/10/2021 18:12

Not a film but series. Polish production. The first series set in 1980's , second in 1990's.
The English title is The Mire 97' (released in 2018. Third series in the making.
Very gritty but very well staged and a gripping story.
