Did anyone else watch this gorgeous film today? I absolutely bloody loved it and it had stayed with me all day. I have never read the book I must admit so cannot remark on that, but blimey what a fabulous story.

Just got back from seeing it with my 24 year old daughter, we loved it but there was no more than 30 people in the cinema

Yes, totally worth it. Not sure whether being pregnant is making me feel more emotional generally but it just really resonated with me. I have no ideas what the critics are saying, but I would recommend it.

It was absolutely great. I loved the book and the film was v faithful to it but in a modern way. Great acting and cinematography.

Our (fairly small) cinema screen was packed. Even the single seat next to me was taken.

I have seen the original and the Winona Ryder version. How does this one differ from the others?

Saoirse is absolutely beautiful in it (and by beautiful I mean her acting, although she is obviously physically beautiful too) and I loved Jo immediately.

I loved Lady Bird too. Has she been in any other good films?

You might like Brooklyn OP, that's another Saorise Ronan film. She stars as an Irish immigrant trying to establish a new life in Brooklyn in the 1950s.

@Ginfordinner I remember the Winona Ryder version but not enough to compare accurately.

It is grittier, they seem poorer somehow. But it isn’t at all dark. Feels more realistic. The scenery is beautiful. The story goes back and forth between 2 time periods in their lives, about 7 years apart I think. Unlike the Winona version which is linear if I remember rightly. Not sure if this is what the book does?

Peanut, yes she is in Brooklyn , Atonement and On Chesil Beach - all well worth a watch

I read an abridged version of the book as a kid where Beth didn't die- boy, was the film a shock!

I saw it yesterday, it’s good, watched at our Everyman cinema on the sofa, and nice gin & tonics, with DD19. She found it a bit confusing as it does go back and forth quite a bit, and I prefer the Winona Ryder version. This one doesn’t show much of when they were children and nothing much about Jo’s time in New York and her friendship with Friedrich. But it was a nice thing to do on Boxing Day.

Nope, the book is most definitely linear. I think I'd find a different approach confusing, I know the book (all four books!) so well.
