Did anyone else watch this gorgeous film today? I absolutely bloody loved it and it had stayed with me all day. I have never read the book I must admit so cannot remark on that, but blimey what a fabulous story.

Yes! I’d forgotten about the subsequent books. My mum read them to me, but it’s a very foggy memory that only just came to me.

Thanks Ginfordinner

So that cheese fest at the end where the family all tell her to go and get her man was fiction?

Yes, the cheese fest was to please the publisher who said her version wouldn't sell.

Aunt March didn't take Jo to Europe as she realised she had no chance marrying her off so took Amy instead and left the house to Jo.

Jo's writing was her one true love as the last scenes with her watching the book being bound showed.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2020 14:35

My last post was about the film not the book or subsequent books.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2020 14:35

I can't wait to see it again, I loved itSmile

ineedaholidaynow · 11/01/2020 14:40

Jo marries, but Louisa May Alcott never married. The film makes you believe that Jo is LM Alcott

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2020 14:47

Yes, that's what I took from it ineedaholidaynow

Horehound · 11/01/2020 14:54

Yes, but she still does end up with him. That's not just for the publisher... She rewrote the ending which is the ending!

MrsMelanieHamilton · 11/01/2020 14:58

I don’t know if you saw Gone WithThe Wind but that is an example of a film staying really close to the book and that is why it has never had a remake as it can never be bettered.

@HappydaysArehere completely off topic but personally I would love there to be a GWTW remake, but I high budget tv series that included everything in the book, including all 3 of Scarlett’s children. I think if done correctly it could be incredible, however I don’t think it’ll every happen as GWTW is viewed as racially offensive and I don’t see how they could skirt over the racial issues in any remake.

HappydaysArehere · 11/01/2020 21:47

@MrsMelanieHamilton (liking your username) I agree about the racism and they couldn’t remake it without omitting or changing a lot. Also, the film is 3 and a half hours long so it would have to be a very long and expensive series plus I couldn’t bear to see another Rhett Butler, Melanie,Ashley or Scarlett. They were all perfect. .Always believed the film couldn’t be bettered. What was amazing that they created such a perfect film as early as 1939.

Ohyesiam · 12/01/2020 13:35

I read the book as a late term and really hated it ( I think the moralising reminded me to much of my convent upbringing!) but I LOVED the film.

I knew there were time jumps thanks to this thread, so it wasnt confusing despite reading it 30 years ago.

I thought Jo was wonderful, and I loved it visually. All the carpet bags and textures of the textiles, the Christmas tree stung with cranberries and popped corn, really visually crisp and sumptuous.

I also thought the ending was clever, with the splicing of Jo’s story and reality around about marriage vs independence.

Dowser · 15/01/2020 20:03

I liked the film but was not blown away by it. I think Liz Taylor will always be Amy in my book .

I thought marmee was well cast and I liked the fact that Aunt March had a bit of humour about her.

Daddy was a bit nondescript and yes Laurie looked way too young
He was ok for him playing young laurie

Beth looked a bit too meaty for the role..and looked like she could’ve fought anything off, including Ebola
Wasn’t overly keen on emma Watson as Meg

Hmmm...theJury is out..I certainly wouldn’t want to watch it again.

Teajenny1 · 16/01/2020 11:42

“Beth looked a bit too meaty for the role..and looked like she could’ve fought anything off, including Ebola“ FFS! 😂

NewName73 · 16/01/2020 16:17

Better Call Saul actor as the father was a bit of casting genius!

Dowser · 16/01/2020 22:02

Millie Bobby Brown would’ve made a good Beth..

orangeblosssom · 16/01/2020 22:14

Loved it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/01/2020 22:22

I agree,Beth needed to be a bit more 'wan' looking as my late nan used to say,I think that means pale and sickly looking.

FearlessSwiftie · 17/01/2020 11:13

I`m going to watch it! Seems like it is 1000% worthy

grannyjacob · 17/01/2020 21:43

Just seen it and really enjoyed it. I read the books 50+ years ago, never ever felt the need to re-read them. I thought the female casting was excellent, less so the men, especially Laurie. I enjoyed the time jumps, think it might have been a bit boring otherwise. The cinematography is superb. And I needed a tissue, more than once.

orangeblosssom · 25/01/2020 13:40

I love Timotee. He has great chemistry on screen with Saiorse.

MrsChanningTatum · 26/01/2020 23:45

I saw it today with my two daughters. I devoured the books when I was about 9 years old. I thought this adaptation was superb. We all really enjoyed it. It was so moving, I must have wept on several occasions. A beautiful film, great casting and acting, and gorgeous costume design.

Destinysdaughter · 12/02/2020 23:19

Not RTFT but watched it tonight and, not having read the Book I have to admit I found it very confusing with all the jumping around with the timelines. If my friend, who had read the Book, hadn't explained what was going on, I'd have been lost! So,sorry, did not really enjoy it and was not moved by it at all, found it rushed and superficial and it has not made me want to read the Book. Sorry!

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 16/02/2020 11:33

I absolutely loved the film - thought it was gorgeous!

oakwood13 · 13/07/2020 13:19

Loved the film, Greta Gerwig is an excellent director as well as a fine actress.

Skyliner001 · 13/07/2020 13:25

I found it extremely underwhelming, although the costumes were lovely.

nosswith · 29/08/2020 17:37

I saw it, only because of liking Greta Gerwig's previous work. Though it excellent, especially Emma Watson.
