I am the biggest marvel fan going.

Watched it earlier today and keen to hear what others thought of the film?

Also has anyone else noticed that Jude Law is the spit of Dean from Home and Away (ahem DS1 forces me to watch it Blush).

Tanaqui · 17/03/2019 17:04

X men Apocalypse did have the very funny bit with Quicksilver- pity they killed off the MFU version of him!

FindPrimeLorca · 17/03/2019 17:05

I also noticed that all the nineties songs were female-led except for Come As You Are which seemed logical since it soundtracked the big confrontation scene in the heart of the Kree patriarchy and also, randomly, one REM song.

CrazyDuchess · 17/03/2019 17:10

Yes poor quicksilver Sad

Just jumping in, huge marvel fan as well. I have quickly skimmed through the thread. I have another link for the tesseract which has a bit more information, I found yesterday after searching through Google.

I didn't love the movie but didn't hate it either. I didn't get the same feeling as when I watched black panther for example which I loved.

I am a new Marvel fan after my kids and husband decided to watch all the MCU films in order and I got sucked in. I’m even watching Jessica Jones on Netflix now!

I absolutely loved Captain Marvel. Except Jude Law who is horrible. Can’t wait for End Game. I love the new trailer with Carol in it.

DeathMetalMum · 17/03/2019 17:27

Also the one of the first things I thought after watching was I need to watch ant-man and the wasp again.

FindPrimeLorca · 17/03/2019 17:40

Haven’t seen AATW. I’m hoping it will be on Netflix UK before Endgame comes out otherwise I’ll have to rent DVD from library.

KickAssAngel · 17/03/2019 17:43

I liked the movie but didn't love it. It felt a bit as if they had written the plot to fill in details for the Avengers story, then sorted out her own personal story, with quick montage to give us some of her history.

Somehow, I just didn't hook into her character and really want to root for her, whereas there are other characters (inc. Wonder Woman) where I get genuinely tense as I want them to be OK. (Yes, I know it's made up, but a really good story gets you emotionally involved, not just entertained).

Although there are strong female characters, it's still a movie dominated by male roles. I know there's the explanation of 90s military being very male dominated, but are ALL alien species also patriarchal? With the same macho men and mother home-nurturer stereotypes?

About the soundtrack - I liked it, but it had several different genres of music, so that it kept getting a different 'feel' and that kind of jarred. I was relaxed into 90s rock nostalgia, when suddenly I got hit with RnB. Also, the editing for the fight scene to "I'm just a girl" seemed a bit off - the action didn't quite align with the music as well as it could. The hand-to-hand fight scene at the start of Winter Soldier between CA and a crew member is absolutely spot on, with every move working exactly with the music. The same for the opening of GOTG. Marvel just wasn't as well choreographed/edited imo.

CrazyDuchess · 17/03/2019 17:46

Oohhh I liked Ant Man and the wasp!

Welcome all new marvel fans Grin

Totally agree Re. Jude Law - he makes my skin itch

The first avenger movie is my ultimate favourite- I can watch that on repeat! And Ragnarok!

Took my a minute to get into Guardians of the Galaxy though.

I grew up with Saturday morning cartoons of the Xmen, Hulk, Superman - so when they started these movies it felt like all my Christmases had come at once!

Yes and agree it wasn't as slick as some of the other films! I wonder if it was slightly rushed??

OP posts:
KickAssAngel · 17/03/2019 17:54

(I wonder if they didn't put as much money into a female-led movie, even those now make more money!)

Traditionally, the budgets for solos movies have been lower.

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2019 17:56

I get the feeling that they don’t really know what to do with female superheroes in the Marvel universe. Black Widow and Scarlet Witch were obviously B-characters and what did they do to validate their existence? Paired them off with a male B-character, completely implausibly. Hulk and Vision, FFS.

Strong male leads can have male or female sidekicks, but a strong female lead? They paired her with Nick Fury, who is nobody’s sidekick and left you not sure who you were meant to be watching.

CrazyDuchess · 17/03/2019 18:00

Yes!! This is new territory and they are not being particularly bold or adventurous atm.

I don't really want a black widow movie - not sure what more they can tell us about her

OP posts:
KickAssAngel · 17/03/2019 18:40

A black widow origin movie would be very dark, and political. When the comics were written it was OK to make everything Russian pure evil, but now that's less acceptable. So they'd have to balance the politics and the very dark child brain-washing & abuse with an audience that typically has lots of kids in it.

Even one about how she was rescued and brought over to Shield would have to deal with how many people she killed.

BartonHollow · 17/03/2019 18:54

I think it's back in fashion to show the Russians as shadowy and dark

I mean look what's happened to the Geopolitical landscape with Russia. They are clearly the most powerful country now and anything else is just necessary pretence

Cwenthryth · 17/03/2019 19:24

I loved it, it wasn’t perfect, but I still loved it. The soundtrack was like a mixtape I would have made when I was 14 Grin I agree I think the fight scene to ‘Just a Girl’ was not made the most of, I really wanted them to crank up the volume and just go for it with that, but it was disjointed and felt like it wasn’t quite allowed to flow.

I loved that there wasn’t a love story shoehorned in and the relationship interest was provided by a female friendship instead. I loved all the connections to the rest of the MCU, the backstory for Fury and Coulson, the Tesseract (even if we have no idea how it got there!), seeing more of Hala and Kree characters like Korath and Ronan.

Can’t wait for Endgame, looking forward so much to Dark Phoenix as well. Very excited for the future when X-men are back in the MCU fold.

For the person who said they haven’t seen Logan because it was all getting formulaic - Logan is different, and well worth it.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/03/2019 20:07

Found it hard work, enjoyable in places slow in others.
It created some plot holes whilst trying to fill in others, but I get the feeling that the drive is to bring in new fans.

It will be interesting to see what happens after endgame with the direction they take and whether it will provide a long lasting fan base.

Yutes · 17/03/2019 20:19

I spent a lot of Captain Marvel wanting to brush her hair off her face tbh.

Really enjoyed the film and how it flippped the idea of who the baddies really are/what it means to be a baddie.

I think Captain America will die as part of Endgame, partly because the title I think denotes a big sacrifice for a big payoff and Chris Evans wants to focus on more directing work

dragonsfire · 17/03/2019 20:21

Am a comic geek it was ok but not the best! Loved the cat, was nice she was pretty normal looking but I didn’t warm to her.

Fun to know how Fury lost his eye 😂

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2019 20:26

The first fight she had with Jude Law I was really itching to put a couple of hair clips in her hair.

Captain America will now have to die because you can’t have two Captains.

But I wonder how she will now fit in with the other heroes, because she’s basically better than them all - she destroyed a massive spaceship by flying through it. It’ll be like Angel Summoner and the BMX Bandit from Mitchell and Webb - Captain America will say ‘I’ll throw my shield at the baddies while Black Widow shoots her little pistols and Hawkeye fires arrows at them’ and Captain Marvel will say ‘I’ve got this’ and just destroys them all, leaving them totally redundant.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/03/2019 20:34

noblegiraffe

the overpowering of capt marvel has been a concern about how she will fit in to endgame for a while now.

The Russo brothers have stated that it was one of their concerns about bringing in such an overpowered character to a preset up group.

Cwenthryth · 17/03/2019 20:52

Grin thanks for reminding me of that sketch! You’re right though. But tbf an Angel Summoner would be needed to beat Thanos.

AltogetherAndrews · 17/03/2019 21:15

It was ok. My two issues with it though-

She’s just too powerful, if she can just fly through massive spaceships with no effort and blow them to pieces, then where’s the challenge?

And if Nick Fury has a special device that he can use to summon this amazingly powerful hero, for emergency use only, why doesn’t he use it when the massive aliens come through a portal and start destroying New York in the first film? Surely that’s a bit of an emergency? More so than some ill defined issue with cars crashing where he doesn’t know what’s going on at the end of Infinity War.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/03/2019 22:17

AltogetherAndrews

For a film that is part of an interlinked universe, there are a whole lot more issues than that.
