I have a looooong list:

The Green Mile
Schindler's list
Atonement
The Colour Purple
History of Violence
American History X
Seven

All horror films - accidentally watched a Centipede one and was horribly disturbed

Split. Just on principal.

I adore Event Horizon. It's (oddly) one of the few films to actually scare me (horror movies just don't normally); but I don't know why - it's pretty disconnected to real life. I think it's the ending. A bit like when I read the children's book Coraline when teacher training. I was fine with that until the other world invaded the real world. That freaked me.

I used American History X to teach US politics. If you are eagle-eyed, you can also spy what Danny types into his school report (before he deletes it) as he recalls the curb incident - which makes it much worse.

Sons of Anarchy - I love, but DS was about 3 when the kidnap storyline aired. Found that hard to watch in a way I wouldn't have before

There's a movie called Hole (one of many), but this one's about a bunch of teens who head to a WWII bunker after school and get trapped inside. I won't spoil anything, but it has a great ending that you'll also hate.

@ZenNudist thats Shutter Island - SPOLIER ALERT - its his wife who drowns the 3 kids. Awful scene, Leo DiCaprio is brilliant though.

For me
Boy in the striped pj's - ugly cried at that one and I refuse to watch again
Alpha Dog - stayed with me for so long after I'd seen it. Me and my friends only went to see it because Justin Timberlake was in it. I wasn't prepared for the end.
The Exorcist - watched it almost 20 years ago and still have nightmares.
Hostel - a certain Achilles tendon scene I will never forget

I don't tend to watch scary films. I don't like being frightened so I stay away!

JellyBears · 22/10/2018 20:59

Silence of the lambs. I watched it ages 14 and I’m still terrified. It stayed with me for weeks took me a long time to get over that one.

MemoryOfSleep · 22/10/2018 21:19

Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children. That boy with no eyes... shudders. And all the plot holes.

LHMB · 27/02/2019 15:40

Watched Mother with Jennifer Lawrence in it last night. Really upset me, that scene with the baby. Horrific!

Meralia · 28/02/2019 15:49

The human centipede

A film from the 80s called ‘White Dog’ horrific and sad.

iklboo · 28/02/2019 16:06

Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children. That boy with no eyes... shudders. And all the plot holes.

That was just an abomination of a film. Totally different to the far superior books. DS was aghast! Grin

llangennith · 01/03/2019 20:52

The Devils. I had no idea what it was about. Only film I've ever walked out on.

LHMB · 01/03/2019 21:24

Also:

Wolf Creek
The hills have eyes
The descent
Saw 4 (only one I’ve seen, only cos my friend wanted to watch it, and I will never watch any of the others either)
Marley and Me

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 02/03/2019 22:31

Hachi
The strangers
Wolf creek

HouseOfMouse · 03/03/2019 02:35

I found Hereditary incredibly unsettling - it was on my mind for days afterwards. Although it’s not really a horror film as such until the end - up to that point it’s more about a family dealing (not very well) with traumatic bereavement.

LHMB · 03/03/2019 19:46

Oh yeah I forgot about the strangers. Also the sequels to joy ride. And the remake of the original Halloween.

TheRedGuardian · 03/03/2019 23:50

Deep Blue Sea
Shark Attack 3: Megalodon
The Thing
Psycho
Un Chien Andalou

Too depressing all of them.

RonaldMcDonald · 03/03/2019 23:55

Wolf creek

LHMB · 25/03/2019 15:56

You're next

Happyd · 03/04/2021 14:44

Requiem for a dream , how drugs effect four people .. the ending is pretty horrific

Bubbletime123 · 06/04/2021 22:51

Mother
The human centipede
Trainspotting
Kill bill when the eye comes out

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/04/2021 01:27

I watched a film easier called Miss Violence, its Greek with subtitles, and starts with a young girl killing herself by jumping off a balcony.
All I can say is that was one of the least disturbing parts.
Good film though for anyone who watches disturbing films.
I'm going to watch Mysterious Skin tomorrow after reading a wee bit about it since seeing it mentioned on here.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/04/2021 14:33

Right, so I watched "Mysterious Skin", and then, "White Dog"
I'm done with the disturbing films for this year week.
I watched a good Documentary last week called, "Life with murder".
It was disturbing but possibly uplifting, but not at all, because it was all so wrong.
Highly recommended.
It's not a spoiler to say it's about a family where the son killed the daughter and the parents have chosen to stand by him
I still can't quite my head around it.

I'm off to watch cartoons or something now!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/04/2021 20:44

@iklboo

Requiem for a Dream
That was awful - just chilling!

i would add "Funny Games" - I found it so upsetting I couldn't keep it in the house and dumped it in the bin. Didn't even want it under our roof long enough to take it to the charity shop, (I only watch to the end because I was hoping and hoping that something good would happen.

It didn't

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/04/2021 21:14

Grave of the fireflies was wonderful but I can't ever put myself through it again!

I agree re: this - it broke my heart. Incredibly moving and so very sad.

Faultymain5 · 19/04/2021 15:48

@HeteronormativeHaybales

Threads. And I didn't even watch the worst bits.
I thought everyone had to watch that as part of the school curriculum. It really disturbed me too.
Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 05:03

Sophie's Choice Sad
Remains of the Day Sad/depressing
Philadelphia Sad
Misery Shock
Sleepers Shock - nearly walked out then

Schindler's List - difficult subject to rewatch especially as I found out later that when the Russians liberated them, the first thing they did was to rape all the women

Welikebeef · 17/05/2021 13:05

Bambi
