Im so excited about this one.

Does anyone else have plans to see it?

I saw it last week and it's still haunting me. We saw it at a pretty quiet showing and at the end, none of us stood up to move out and everyone sat in their seats, all desperately trying to compose themselves; including the group of German men who were sat in front of us. My teens said it was the most uncomfortable and stressful movie they've ever watched (they all loved it) and I cried in several places, realising for the first time, what a fucking terrible event my Grandfather experienced.

It was an easy 5 stars from me.

BrightYellowStripes · 28/07/2017 01:13

It didn't make me cry - Hacksaw Ridge was the last film to do that!

Unfortunately I missed a lot of it due to the characters mumbling and I simply couldn't make out what was being said. Especially in the planes.

A1Sharon · 28/07/2017 07:30

Hacksaw Ridge! I needed a lie down after that, it was so stressful. Brilliant film.
It's obviously just me, but I wasn't mad on Dunkirk. It was good, but not great.

GloriaV · 28/07/2017 07:41

I found it exhausting - all that tension.

But the image of Kenneth Branagh in the last scene of the escape beach, is truly etched on my brain.

Dowser you need to read this [[Your Guide to the Similar-Looking Men of Dunkirk

Don't know if the link has worked but you can google it - looks like a lt of people have the same issues as us!

Mrstiggywink49 · 28/07/2017 16:36

We were disappointed, over 300,000 men were evacuated from the beaches but it looked like a few hundred. 800 small boats set sail and crossed to France but it looked like 20! The music, apart from Nimrod, droned on and on and on and on. Sorry..i preferred Cockleshell Heroes

Mrstiggywink49 · 28/07/2017 16:38

Oh...amd all the men looked the same!

Mrstiggywink49 · 28/07/2017 16:48

Oops iy was Dunkirk starring John Mills made in about '58

imacmum · 28/07/2017 17:49

Saw it last week, bit disappointed Tom Hardy had his face covered up the whole time

Gladys123 · 28/07/2017 20:31

I think that we didnt see 300,000 men because the men there didn't see that many. I think we're supposed to see it from just the main characters point of view. They couldn't possibly have known the scale of the rescue effort until afterwards.

Witchend · 29/07/2017 23:56

I've been wondering whether to take 10yo WWII mad ds to see it. Think he'd be fine, not sure I would be. Smile He cried during the Dambusters when the plane crashed but that was a couple of years ago, but he generally prefers documentaries.

Interestingly I found out fairly recently that my granddad would almost certainly have been one of the RAF backup planes as his squadron was used. I don't think he ever talked about it, although he talked about some aspects of WWII, especially the flying, which he loved.

I cried buckets. Harry was brilliant Everyone upthread has covered main points.

IVFNewbie · 04/08/2017 16:33

Crashing disappointment. All style with little substance.

I loved it!

i have been to Normandy and done the D Day landing tours and it's just fascinating and humbling. Same here, such a military disaster but triumph of spirit.

The Scottish pilot was yum. Harry Styles was great!

Beautiful cinematography. Music with splatterings of Nimrod. At one point I was feeling a bit queasy with the turns of the RAF pilots. Wonderful stuff

implantsandaDyson · 05/08/2017 20:43

I saw it today, I thought it was very very good. I usually like Christopher Nolan' s films, but Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance are two of my least favourite actors so I was marking hard to begin with Grin. I thought the action scenes were tight, there wasn't a lot of wasted, exposition scenes (I know that was Kenneth Branaghs role but it wasn't laboured). I'm not sure I drew a breath in the opening scenes when they're running through Dunkirk. The only person that felt a bit superfluous to me strangely enough was the Scottish fighter pilot Blush I felt he was a bit shoehorned in. I think I'll probably see it again - my 12 year old wants to see it. A lot of her classmates have seen it over the summer all of them have been glad they saw it.

CoolCarrie · 05/08/2017 21:50

I bloody loved it, especially the music which was wonderful and my ex was in it, and was wonderful as he always is, so made it all the better.

NormaSmuff · 05/08/2017 23:57

was Tom Hardy a pilot?
and who was HArry Styles?

CoolCarrie · 06/08/2017 00:01

Yes Tom Hardy was a pilot, but they had masks on, and Harry Styles had short hair for a change.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2017 00:06

Jack Lowden, as the Scottish pilot, is my new crush. I saw him in War and Peace recently and despite being nearly twice his age his blue eyes set me all a-flutter.

I could think where I'd seen him before. He was lovely.

NormaSmuff · 06/08/2017 00:11

excellent film.their desperation to get home was palpable, as was the desperation in the pilot's eyes. i felt I would just keep shooting the enemy's planes and forego my own chances of survival, just as he did

gabsdot · 08/08/2017 14:25

I really enjoyed it. I thought the acting was great and I adore Kenneth Brannagh. I'd watch him in anything. Tom Hardy was great too considering we only really saw is eyes,

It was confusing though. I think I'll need to see it again.
e.g. were the young guys in 3 ships that sank before they got on the small boat?
Did we see the sunk ship Cillian Murphy was on before it sank? Was it the same one the other guys were on at night maybe?
Anyway. Thumbs up from me

gingergenius · 09/08/2017 19:48

Brilliant film! Loved the multi-POV narrative and variable timelines. Took me a while to cotton on but loved it. Sobbed for about half an hour after it finished!
