Film reccommendations - a challenge!

I love watching films of most genres so any film suggestions welcome if you want to share your favourites but what I'd really like are some horror/thriller recommendations BUT not gory, not supernatural/paranormal, nothing where anyone is possessed.

I like films that make you a bit scared/uneasy but not feel like vomiting because of all the blood and guts (like saw).

If it helps some of the TV and films I like that's about the level of 'gore/horror' I don't mind would be stalker, Luther, dexter and criminal minds, scream, nightmare on elm street, and seven, though that was borderline!

The Mothman Prophecies
Candyman
Deliverance
Play MIsty For Me

SpareHead3 · 10/08/2016 00:36

The Wicker Man (must be the original though!)

I like Kevin Spacey too, his characters always seem unsettling so I'll add American Beauty and K-Pax.

Also Apocalypse Now. That just gets stranger as it goes on.

SpareHead3 · 10/08/2016 00:42

Another old one, Angel Heart.

Rockelburger · 10/08/2016 00:54

Love a good thriller

Have you seen the others? Nicole Kidman?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 10/08/2016 00:58

The Orphanage is brilliant
Wolf Creek
The Cabin in the Woods

yougottheshining · 10/08/2016 01:07

Agree with lots of these, especially Audition, OldBoy and the original The Haunting. Would add The Vanishing (again, the original). It's a total headfuck, particularly the ending. No gore and not supernatural at all.

yougottheshining · 10/08/2016 01:09

And I take it you've seen the film my name is from? Smile

WalkingInTheAir13 · 10/08/2016 01:17

The Shining indeed! Many critics said it was OTT but for me, it was truly terrifying and creepy.

yougottheshining · 10/08/2016 01:27

I think it's brilliant. It's not even really a horror imo - more like a strange and disturbing art work. It plays around with all sorts of references and resonances until your mind is truly battered. Did people say it was over the top as a criticism? I mean, yes but surely that's the point.

avamiah · 10/08/2016 01:29

I to love The Shining and the original Halloween film.
Yes, Cabin In The Woods is another great film.
And I loved "The Blair Witch Project", in fact I still don't know what happened but my boyfriend said he won't watch it again as it really freaked him out.

avamiah · 10/08/2016 01:31

Has anyone seen Blair Witch Project?
Where did they all go to , they just vanished.??

yougottheshining · 10/08/2016 01:48

I don't think you're supposed to know what's happened to them. One guy disappears the day before, then they get to the creepy house and something happens to the other guy that makes him stand in the corner, then something happens to the woman and she drops her camera. So my guess is it is Something Unspeakable going on there, the worst thing your imagination can conjure up, then times 100.

avamiah · 10/08/2016 01:57

yougottheshining,
Yes, when she dropped the camera she vanished and that was the end, but it still makes you think where did they go?
It's similar in a way to Shutter Island if you have seen it.
I watched it 4 times before I got the Ending .
So I really recommend Shutter Island.

yougottheshining · 10/08/2016 02:12

Ooh I really liked Shutter Island as well. Agree with you about the ending - very 'woah!'

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 10/08/2016 02:13

Oh wow! Thanks everyone! I've seen the others, the shining and the Blair witch project but not for years so I'll rewatch them all as well as the ones suggested that I haven't seen.

Just remembered The Purge, it will keep you on the edge of your seats .

RubbishMantra · 11/08/2016 12:14

Sucker Punch is a good one, so is Haute Tension, if you don't mind subtitles, and a little bit of gore. Nothing on the scale of Saw and the likes though.

maamalady · 11/08/2016 15:03

A slightly different one worth watching (thank you PP for making me think of Kevin Spacey) is Moon - superb film.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 11/08/2016 19:15

Thank you all. I've wondered about the purge, wasn't sure how gory it was but I'll give it a go!

OP posts:
avamiah · 12/08/2016 00:12

The Purge isn't gory.
It's brilliant

RubbishMantra · 12/08/2016 18:12

The Purge - oh God, at times I almost found the suspense to difficult to bear! Especially the first one, (there's a series of 3 films). No gore. And I thought a cleverly made film, commenting on America's attitude to "the drain on society" - ie people that don't live in "naice" neighbourhoods.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/08/2016 18:18

Most effecting part of Purge was the shock jocks phone in over the end credits. It's a very clever film.

There was a Purge thread on mumsnet, lots of mnetters want to raid zoos and steal tigers!

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 12/08/2016 20:07

Excellent, I'll watch the purge at the weekend then!

RubbishMantra,
I've seen one and two of The Purge.
Are you sure there is a third one?
You've made my night if there is.
Can you tell me the year as I'll see if I can get it on iTunes, Netflix etc or anymore info.
Thanks

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/08/2016 00:51

Purge Election Year is no.3
Not sure when it's out.
