Film reccommendations - a challenge!

I love watching films of most genres so any film suggestions welcome if you want to share your favourites but what I'd really like are some horror/thriller recommendations BUT not gory, not supernatural/paranormal, nothing where anyone is possessed.

I like films that make you a bit scared/uneasy but not feel like vomiting because of all the blood and guts (like saw).

If it helps some of the TV and films I like that's about the level of 'gore/horror' I don't mind would be stalker, Luther, dexter and criminal minds, scream, nightmare on elm street, and seven, though that was borderline!

The Coen brothers' first film, Blood Simple, is a fantastic noirish thriller. Try that.

"The Orphanage" as another poster suggested is a great film. I found it to be one of the most beautiful, haunting and memorable films I have ever watched. I could not recommend a film more strongly.

For films without gore but a lot of suspense what about the original (Japanese versions) of The Ring, Dark Water and The Grudge.

Sleep Tight- a Spanish horror thriller which is quite creepy, TBH, and did not end how I'd expected. Still haunts me...

This is hard because you said no supernatural. Some of the suggestions above are supernatural to the brim like Woman in Black.
Are you sure about no ghosts?

I like "Vertigo" for a sense of foreboding and suspense.
"Psycho" another classic.

I like "The Guest" starring Dan Stevens for it's 80's thriller vibe (on netflix)

"The Hitcher" a real 80's classic thriller.

"The Uninvited" an overlooked recent thriller, remade from a Korean horror. I really like this movie a lot but no ones seen it.

Sigh...I love films.

There was a recent thread about this, and someone mentioned a film called Hush, which is on Netflix. Really good edge of your seat stuff!

The original Haunting (1960) is superb but it is very paranormal.
Suspiria is genuinely terrifying and quite bloody.
Peeping Tom.
Suddenly Last Summer
Secret Ceremony
The Night of the Hunter

Frailty with Bill Paxton. Only film to ever freak me out.

The original OldBoy is extremely creepy if you don't mind subtitles

I'd prefer no ghosts but I'll give any film a go if it's really good!

Like lemonlady I do prefer a psychological thriller with something more 'real' like a human stalker/killer. Something like Hush (thank you to the poster who mentioned that and said it had been mentioned on another thread, I'll look for that).

Also I recentl enjoyed a film called 9 dead and some more Netflix ones - circle, exam room, no good deed and obsessed.

Happy with subtitles as well!

I'll work my way through all these suggestions 😊

Great thread. One of my faves is Silence of the lambs. Oldie but a goodie!

Have you seen Fear with marky mark and reese Witherspoon? that's one of my favourite stalker movies

Report
bimbobaggins · 08/08/2016 15:17

Silence of the lambs is also one of my favourite films. No matter how many times I watch it it always frightens me as much as the first time.

Best film I've seen this year, eye in the sky.

If you are looking for suspense and you like stalker-type films, then two very different movies spring to mind:

  • Assault on Precinct 13. Action-adventure-suspense about a police station, some old school, low budget, John Carpenter brilliance. Halloween is similar, but far, far scarier.

  • The Descent. Someone already mentioned this, but it's an incredibly taut, suspenseful horror film that really will make you jump.

Don't Look Now and the original Japanese The Ring are also great. And I think it takes a lot to beat Rear Window and Night of the Hunter - the latter is absolutely beautiful.

Oh, on the stalker note... Audition. Japanese film. Shivers in fear

I love stalker movies too OP. I think it's the psychology of it all.

If you're a leftie and like hostage films, you must see John Q. I cried my eyes out

Oh god, Audition disturbed the absolute fuck out of me! Shuddering at the memory of one bit in particular, yikes.
