Most romantic film?

Want to get ideas for Valentine's day. Think dh and I will have a quiet night in but would like to watch a "nice" film to get us in a romantic mood.

No silly rom com rubbish though, something more intelligent and slightly erotic but not in a pornagraphic way if that makes sense.

Do you mind ones in French w/subtitles?

Two spring to mind instantly (I own them both and watch often!): Amelie and The Girl on the Bridge.

choosyfloosy · 26/01/2007 21:11

The Big Easy?

boogiewoogie · 26/01/2007 21:14

Have seen Amelie many times. I watch it to cheer me up!!

girl on a bridge is good

moondog · 26/01/2007 21:21

Y'see I don't get that Expat.
You've watched it once.
Why watch again?

choosyfloosy · 26/01/2007 21:29

Oh, Strictly Ballroom! That's my watch again and again romance.

themoon66 · 26/01/2007 21:36

Another French one.. subtitled.. 'Angel-a'. In black and white with flashes of colour. Very good.

theheadgirl · 26/01/2007 21:36

cold mountain is good - american civil war drama, with a romantic sad climax

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:31

Romantic sad climax.

That isn't TRUE.

In the book, he lives. They marry and have 3 children together.

Ruby marries the Georgia boy, Reid, and has 3 sons herself.

It ends w/them having a final picnic in October, before the bad weather sets in. All together - them and the children.

Happily enough.

Jude Law is NO Inman.

But you couldn't do better than Nicole Kidman was Ada.

Inman himself described her as 'somewhat thistelish in comportment.'

PrincessPeaHead · 26/01/2007 23:33

This will be a short thread.
THe most romantic film ever made - casablanca.

End of

mrsnoah · 26/01/2007 23:35

Oh the most poignant love story I have ever watched was The Bridges of Madison County with Meryl Streep.

Watch it and weep with complete joy/sadness/longing oh ....its wonderful sob

PrincessPeaHead · 26/01/2007 23:42

... and that would be a high contender for worst romantic movie ever, in my book MrsNoah

and the book an outright winner of "shittest and worst written book ever to sell a trillion copies"

sorry

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:43

Yes, I am w/PPH.

Once I got to all that Planet Z crap, the Harlequin writer in my just went, 'Pal, you're like a model trying to be an actress. Please, don't do this.'

ledodgy · 26/01/2007 23:43

Before Sunrise
After Sunset

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:45

Get out, led!

OMG!

Before Sunrise, okay.

I withstood one hour of the other one.

Before I turned it off in disgust.

Ethan, face it, you jacked Uma over and she left you.

Go away.

PrincessPeaHead · 26/01/2007 23:46

OK Ledodgy, you are a woman after my own heart.

I bought both of them on DVD for myself for christmas, wrapped them, wrote a tag "dear mummy lots of love from dd2" (who was 11 months!) and I secretly think that they might have been my best present

god such good films.

ledodgy · 26/01/2007 23:46
Grin
PrincessPeaHead · 26/01/2007 23:47

expat, watch it! it unfolds really beautifully. the first hour they are sort of sizing each other up, then they really put the crap to one side and he describes the really sadly terrible marriage he is in and she describes how she can't sustain a relationship and it is AMAZING. and the end is wonderful

bandstand · 26/01/2007 23:47

west side story

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:48

I made it till they got out of the cafe w/the second one.

Where they were walking up the road.

Oh, god, what madness is this?

They're going to talk this damn thing to death!

'Oh the horror! The horror!'

PrincessPeaHead · 26/01/2007 23:50

expat I PROMISE you if you watch the whole thing you will start a thread called "thank you PPH for making me watch after sunset, it was fabulous"

honestly

mrsnoah · 26/01/2007 23:51

oh (small voice)

well bog off I liked it!

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:51

he reminded me of my ex-bf, the San Diego native.

'EIS, how do you feel' 'EIS, let's talk' 'EIS, I feel I'm self-actualising often. Let's go to therapy.'

No, EIS-ex. No, please. You have a beautiful body and a huge thingy! Let's shut up and speak the language of amour! Let's lay in each other's arms and say nothing. Let's exchange a glance, a brush against the skin. Wash my hair and say nothing.

Meet my train with only flower. Say nothing.

Let me catch you sniffing my scarf because it carries my perfume.

Zip up my dress.

There is such a thing as too much talk.

After Sunset is proof of this.

ledodgy · 26/01/2007 23:52

The first one is much better than the second imo but I had to watch it again recently as I remembered the train bit but then was convinced he turned into a were wolf and she had to lock him up in cage! I got two films mixed up in my head as the first time it was on tv I had plurasy and a really high temp!

expatinscotland · 26/01/2007 23:54

No, it wasn't your temp, led. It was because the film was crap.
