Most romantic film?

Want to get ideas for Valentine's day. Think dh and I will have a quiet night in but would like to watch a "nice" film to get us in a romantic mood.

No silly rom com rubbish though, something more intelligent and slightly erotic but not in a pornagraphic way if that makes sense.

I was going to suggest 'Betty Blue' too, TMMJ.
Wasn't sure if it is very 'Valentiney' though!
Although the film is beautiful.

buktus · 27/01/2007 07:37

holiday at the cinema is good

expatinscotland · 27/01/2007 21:41

Romantic does NOT equal depressing!

'Betty Blue' is ROMANTIC?!

WTF, are you a Coldplay fan?

Is your other nomination 'Kalifornia'?

themoon66 · 27/01/2007 23:34

I like While you Were Sleeping
and White Palace
and Sex Lies and Videotape

harpsichordcarrier · 27/01/2007 23:38

oh and What's Eating Gilbert Grape

expatinscotland · 27/01/2007 23:41

It is a brilliant film.

And there was lots of sex.

But damn, that was depressing and hard to watch.

expatinscotland · 27/01/2007 23:42

I didn't get the Eternal Sunshine either.

Thought it was a waste of time and Kate Winslet's character wasn't worth the time of day.

The Princess Bride?

I haven't watch that in a while. Will have to pull it out.

bran · 27/01/2007 23:43

I think my most romantic film is Who am I this time, starring Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken. It's a lovely, gentle film. I think it's quite old, early 80's possibly.

AitchTwoOh · 28/01/2007 00:12

oh my god, BRAN!!!!!
you have just answered a question that has been bugging me on and off for 20 years! thank you SO much...

i saw that film once as a teen when i was sent upstairs in disgrace to tidy my bedroom and i happened to catch in on bbc2 or something. sat spellbound on the end of my bed the whole time, didn't do any cleaning and developed a crush on christopher walken before i even knew that he was someone, iykwim? i just thought it was a daytime movie, so it came as a surprise that it had good actors. didn't know who sarandon was either at the time.
have just googled and found that it came from a kurt vonnegut story so it's hardly surprising it was so good. vonnegut's throwaway story ideas are better than the very best ideas i've ever had.

anyway, sorry to go on but i am v excited. thanks!

AitchTwoOh · 28/01/2007 00:14

turns out it was directed by jonathan demme. it's all coming together...

melpomene · 28/01/2007 00:18

For anyone who liked Amelie, I would highly recommend 'A Very Long Engagement', which also stars Audrey Tautou. She plays a young woman who is trying to track down her fiance, who's missing after WW1. Everyone else presumes he's dead but she refuses to give up hope.

It's an intelligent film, romantic and optimistic in tone and with a couple of sexy bits in it. It is very moving without being overly sentimental. It does have some grim and mildly gory scenes of war, so maybe not exactly a Valentine's film, but definitely worth seeing. It is very moving without being overly sentimental.

bran · 28/01/2007 12:00

You're welcome Aitch. You and I must have been watching it at the same time, I saw it one boring afternoon when I was a teenager staying at my aunt's house. Ever since then I've thought it very strange that such a good film was so unknown. I don't think it was even in the cinemas, and I haven't seen it on tv since then.

Coolmama · 28/01/2007 12:05

Immortal Beloved with Gary Oldman - The story of the love of Beethoven's life - not necessarily true, but the most beautiful tearjerker!

AitchTwoOh · 28/01/2007 14:43

isn't that funny? i never caught the beginning so i didn't know what the film was called. at least you weren't in disgrace at the time...

thanks for that, really. i'm honestly thinking of buying it on DVD now, i really want to see it again. i think at the time i was entertaining notions of being an actor so i was knocked out by the performances, what with each of them playing two characters and everything. thought it was aaammmmaaaaaaaaazing, in the way that only an hormonal teen can.

bran · 28/01/2007 15:58

I was thinking about buying it after I posted, but I could only find a region 1 verion on CD-wow . I'm tempted anyway, I'll just have to watch it before we get a new dvd player as the current one is multi-regional but the new one might not be.

boogiewoogie · 28/01/2007 20:25

many thanks for all your suggestions. Yes, I did ask for something slightly erotic mmjanitor!

I think I might go for "girl on the bridge" or "before sunrise" or "the piano"

The Big Easy - yum Dennis Quaid!

AnneJones · 22/02/2007 17:58

ooh also Grosse Point Blank - romantic but v witty and funny. Not really that erotic though. Except if you have a thing for John Cusack. Which I do. (Sorry Mrs Cusack).

Minnie Driver is also in it.

RosemaryWoodhouse · 27/06/2007 01:56

Somewhere in Time

It makes me feel so wistful, and I would definitely go dyke for Jane Seymour.
