Tween sleepover movies?

DD is having a sleepover for her 11th birthday- all girls. They want to watch a film. DD wants to be grown up and won't entertain anything that is rated anything lower than a 12. I wasn't happy with her being allowed to watch the latest James bond at a school sleepover, but I was the only parent who seemed to object so we let her otherwise she would have felt left out. Therefore I don't think the other girl's parents care too much about what they watch. She has already seen Pitch Perfect, Clueless, Spectre.

So! Recommendations please for movies the girls will enjoy that are a 12 or lower and 'grown up' and 'cool' enough? No animated disney!

One that was recommended for me on here in a similar case - whip it. It's about roller derby abd it's great and they are almost guaranteed not to have seen it.

Drew Barrymore is in it.

Pitch perfect 1 or/and 2 (couple of mild sexual references but that's all)

A few of Lindsay Logans old movies are tweeny, freaky Friday, just my luck, confessions of a teenage drama queen.

All very 'safe' but feel grown up, I'm 23 and remember these at sleepovers :)

mogloveseggs · 03/07/2016 21:00

Just place marking for later.

I wouldn't have been happy about the James Bond film either, FWIW.

Seven Brides for Seven Brother! Singing and dancing and lovely (yes a bit probably not how things are done now but a lovely film)

AlfieandAnnieRose · 04/07/2016 13:39

Stand by me. And agree with Whip It as suggested above

CoraPirbright · 04/07/2016 13:41

My dd loves Guardians of the Galaxy! Also second Stardust, poss Enchanted. Or that Snow White one with Julia Roberts in it?

chunkymum1 · 04/07/2016 13:42

You mentioned girls won't like princess films (agree with you) but Princess Diaries is not really a princess film. It's a normal, slightly geeky girl who lives with her mum and finds out that her dad is actually part of a European royal family, and that her gran wants to crown her as a princess. Cue much hilarity as gran tries to make her ladylike but she ends up making everyone else more laid back and fun. With a bit of age appropriate romance and villanry thrown on (she likes one boy, but a rival family are trying to get her together with someone else to somehow overthrow the royal family, but don't worry she sees through it). Can anyone tell my DD has watched this a few times???

There is also a sequel so could do both for a sleepover.

These are all 12
Mean Girls (not the sequel), Confessions of a Shopaholic, Zoolander, The Duff, Divergent, The Maze Runner, Fault in Our Stars, The Perks of being a Wallflower (contains mild sex and drugs), Bride Wars, Wild Child

Pogmella · 04/07/2016 20:44

Blackfish

ShadowsCollideWithKittens · 04/07/2016 20:52

Empire Records. It's a bit old but brilliant - and now I feel a bit old saying that Grin. I actually watched it at the first ever sleepover I went to, it was new at the time. Still watch it from time to time BlushGrin

Eebahgum · 05/07/2016 21:56

Blackfish? I'm assuming you don't mean the shocking documentary about killer whales in captivity?

MrsFionaCharming · 05/07/2016 23:10

Penelope, Bend it like Beckham, or Bring it on?

Pogmella · 06/07/2016 07:48

Yes Eehbahgum my niece found it really interesting, it is very powerful but she could handle it at 12.
