So when we were teenagers and watched this, we all preferred non-threatening cutie Duckie over drippy creep Blaine.. yes? But now we're in the full flower of mature womanhood... I think we're all agreed that we'd rip James Spader's white chinos off with our teeth, no questionGrin

This was my favourite teenage movie and I adored Andrew McCarthy. *
Sigh.

FatSwan · 01/03/2015 14:31

I never understood the appeal of Blaine either!

Or Andie though. She wasn't very nice.

Rob Lowe....evergreen.

RoseTheHat · 01/03/2015 14:31

Lardy just looked up Some Kind of Wonderful - looks right up my street, thanks!
Yes I didn't see any of these when they were first released as a smidge too young... there are huge gaps in my 80s teen film knowledge. Any other recommendations welcome!

JS' s fair was surely the best bit! Sad Grin well the hair and the rolled up chinos, mankles and loafers. And fag.

Yes OP, that is correct.
I loved Duckie and thought Blane was a knob. However, Steff..The second time I saw the film, post puberty. .Omg dirty nasty Steff...This was my sexual awakening! Grin
John Cusack is my husband in my head so back off 'kay?
You need to watch Sixteen Candles and Some Kind of Wonderful for sure.

Nervo · 01/03/2015 14:39

Are l forgetting Christian Slater?

Other good films:

The Breakfast Club
Heathers

A dj one with Christian Slater - will google.

Bogeyface · 01/03/2015 14:39

I hated the dress too, the one she cut up with the big poofy skirt was far nicer, she should have just worn that!

JS in Stargate was swoonsome, loved his geeky persona in that!

Bogeyface · 01/03/2015 14:41

I used to love the breakfast club until I rewatched it a few weeks ago. OMG it was awful!

They were sitting around snivelling about how horrible their parents were and how fucked up they had made the kids, OH SHUT UP!!! And when Ally thingy came out at the end looking all cutsie and "acceptable" I got the rage too. I thought she looked better before!

Nervo · 01/03/2015 14:41

Pump Up the Volume

Also, he's in Name of the Rose which is excellent. He's Naked in it. Swoon.

Lardylassnomore · 01/03/2015 14:44

Pump up the volume!the soundtrack provided the music to my mean and moody teen years!

Nervo · 01/03/2015 14:45

Yeah, he plays Leonard Cohen. Can't remember the plot but can remember that.

Lardylassnomore · 01/03/2015 14:48

Pump up the volume in a nutshell

Shy teen by day/ Howard stern kind of Dj by night

Boy falls in love

Boy and girl try and run from the authorities

RoseTheHat · 01/03/2015 14:52

Oh yeah love Christian Slater - Heathers is brill.
And Keifer Sutherland obvs. Then, now, always Grin
Haven't seen 16 candles! or St Elmos Fire

SKOW is fantastic! I love it :)

Weird Science is another favourite of mine! If its AM you're after, Catholic Boys (sometimes called Heaven Help Us) is very good. I think TBC is one best watched as a teenager (first time anyway)

Nervo · 01/03/2015 14:56

Ha, I was going to suggest Weird Science. I loved it but I'm reckoning that it won't have stood the test of time.

St Elmo's Fire is a must. You will totally fall for Andrew McArthy.

SorrelForbes · 01/03/2015 14:57

I wear diamond stud earrings every day. DH thinks this is because he bought them for me which it is sort of, but mostly because of Some Kind of Wonderful Blush

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2015 15:01

Nervo · 01/03/2015 15:06

Aye Sparkling, is that the one where she gets pregnant from a one night stand. Demi Moore.

Mystic Pizza is also a good film. Not for swooning. Can't remember why I like it.

squoosh · 01/03/2015 15:07

Oh I love Mystic Pizza.

squoosh · 01/03/2015 15:08

It features a very young Matt Damon in a blink and you'll miss it appearance.

Baddz · 01/03/2015 15:12

Keifer in Pompeii?
Just...no.
Rob Lowe...still beautiful.
Hated PIP.
Love SEF
Never been into Andrew McCarthy.
And Eric stoltz? No. Sounds like david beckham...all squeaky. Did you know he was the first choice for back to the future and they even started filming but the director wasn't happy and called in MJF? :)

Jackiebrambles · 01/03/2015 15:13

Rose your op made me laugh out loud!

My sister and I used to swoon over Blaine. Christ what a drip he was!
Love that film. Spader looked about 30 in his Miami vice suit, smoking in the school corridors!

Some kind of wonderful is my absolute fave. Eric Stoltz is gorgeous in it, and Elias Koteas too.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 01/03/2015 15:15

Ooh Sparklingbrook, that Spader picture!!! Yummy.

WeShouldOpenABar · 01/03/2015 15:15

pretty in pink hit my Netflix suggestions this week so I watched for the first time ever! my God what a dull offering , plus she takes two perfectly nice dresses to make that monstrosity at the end.
I know they're teenagers but they went from zero to love with literally zero motivation, he was so wet ! duckie at least had a personality . why Andie would have three of them vying for her I could never work out if you gave me forever
