So when we were teenagers and watched this, we all preferred non-threatening cutie Duckie over drippy creep Blaine.. yes? But now we're in the full flower of mature womanhood... I think we're all agreed that we'd rip James Spader's white chinos off with our teeth, no questionGrin

Nervo there is a one night stand and Demi Moore but no pregnancy. Plus James Belushi playing Danny's (Rob Lowe) best mate.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 01/03/2015 15:24

Not a teen Movie, but Desperately Seeking Susan is a great 80s film.
And if you want the quintessential UK teen movie, Gregorys Girl. Oh yes.

limitedperiodonly · 01/03/2015 15:34

Can there be any finer cinematic experience than Not just Rob Lowe but James Spader too.

Admittedly he's wimpier than in Pretty In Pink but wimpy has its good points.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 01/03/2015 15:37

Howdoo Sparks. Thought I might find you here. Grin

Thingy Pink frock woman looked a bloody fright in that frock. How could they ever ever ever, even in the decade that style forgot, think that a redhead could rock sugar pink? The kidz would actually just have rolled on the floor going "my eyes my eyes" when she walked in. It was embarrassing.

Duckie was a drip. And yer other bloke was a slimeball.

The Psychedelic Furs were good though.

SKOW was better, "better to be on your own for the right reasons, than with someone for the wrong ones" If only we'd listened.....I think the posh bird he hires the stadium for is Marty McFly's mother isn't she?

Sparks is right though, if you want non-cringey 80s films, About Last Night is the winner. says the woman who knows Top Gun by heart

What about "Can't Buy Me Love" from 1987 with a mega geeky Patrick Dempsey long before "Grays Anatomy"

Had to pay the popular girl to pretend to be his girlfriend .

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2015 15:47

I was very late to it Drank. My 80s movies thread alert needs new batteries. About Last Night is THE best 80s film.

I do think Kevin Bacon may need a mention for his work in She's Having a Baby with her off of Downton.

YY that pink dress was bogging in PIP.

lpo I haven't seen that in years. Thanks for the reminder. Flowers

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2015 15:49

Lardylassnomore · 01/03/2015 15:49

Debinaround · 01/03/2015 15:55

You have just reminded me. Loved that film.

RoseTheHat · 01/03/2015 17:04

Footloose was terrible. As is a lot of 80s films. But i still watch them[over and over again]

And its KIEFER people learn to spell.

TwinkleThis · 01/03/2015 17:37

Ah yes, Pretty in Pink. The classic 80's teen film featuring the seminal fashion moment where Molly Ringwald invents...the Triangle Dress.

Diane von Furstenberg wept.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/03/2015 17:39

God no. My heart belongs to Duckie.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/03/2015 19:59

I could never understand the appeal of 'The Breakfast Club'. I watched it several times to see what I'd missed... and I still can't get it?

There were some quite good early 90's films that were almost 80's in feel.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2015 20:07

My CD box set comprises of

The Breakfast Club (I love parts of the film but rarely watch the whole thing)
St Elmo's Fire
About Last Night

The last two I could watch all day.

Faez · 01/03/2015 20:08

I still can't get it either Lying

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/03/2015 20:10

The Breakfast Club is my favourite film ever. Could watch it at least once a month without getting bored (not that I do, because that would be very sad).

CatthiefKeith · 01/03/2015 20:35

I can't believe nobody has mentioned The Outsiders!

Awesome 80's film.

redfairy · 01/03/2015 20:45

It's all about McCarthy in Mannequin for me.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 01/03/2015 21:04

I was thinking about the Outsiders Cattheif! However, it has a different feel, being set in Oklahoma or somewhere, rather than suburban Chicago, like all the John Hughes films. I love it though.

i really liked andrew mcarthy in class when i was younger. blimey watching it now it's so risque and a little sad really.

i also watched pretty in pink the other day and was more interested in andi's older friend who sort of squared out when she met her 'dream' man. the john hughes films do sort of age quite badly but for their time there were brilliant. though looking back at pretty in pink it's weird how the rich kids had their own car parks and recreation areas in the schools they attended which was pretty standard reading into it. it's very strange.

IdaBlankenship · 01/03/2015 21:12

I really like The Sure Thing also. But, I do have a mahoosive soft spot for John Cusack.
Pretty In Pink and The Breakfast Club remain the 2 best 80's teen movies... and I would totally have James Spader over Andrew McCarthy, however I would take Judd Nelson in TBC over both Grin

southeastastra · 01/03/2015 21:13

sure thing is funny, it's on youtube i watched it a year of so ago

GoEasyPudding · 01/03/2015 21:14

I had a pal at school that went to the cinema about 4 times to see Mannequin. I managed once, I did like it though!

You know, I thought I knew my 80's films but you guys have named a few I haven't seen.

I vividly remember seeing Catholic Boys on TV and being very impressed by the climatic bit near the end. (Won't spoil it by saying what)

For me Young Guns was my big favourite for the swoony cast - although it's a bit off topic and genre for this thread but it is 80's!
