Howdy!
I love me a bit of Oscars night action, I always stay up all night and watch the ceremony live.
This year I'm actually hopeful to achieve seeing every film nominated for Best Picture before the ceremony. I had to go to the cinema three times this past weekend to get them all in but so far I've seen Imitation Game (loved it), The Theory of Everything (loved it, sobbed!), Boyhood (enjoyed it more than I thought I would) and Grand Budapest Hotel (thought it was ok but nothing very special)
So I've got to see Whiplash, Selma, American Sniper and Birdman. I'm not looking forward to American Sniper but Bradley Cooper might make it ok and I think Birdman might be weird...

Anyone trying to do the same?

My mum said Selma is fantastic. Won't be staying up to watch. Working tomorrow.

AgentCooper · 22/02/2015 15:25

I won't be watching as I can barely stay up past 10 (at the grand old age of 29!) but I'm excited to see the results tomorrow!

I've seen:
Boyhood: quite good, but I do wonder if it would have had the same effect without the 12 year time lapse IRL. I wouldn't be fussed to watch it again.

Foxcatcher: I loved this. Really beautiful cinematography, brilliant performances and a riveting story. I think Channing Tatum should have been nominated for best actor.

Gone Girl: good fun and Rosamund Pike was brilliant but not really Oscar-worthy, IMO.

Birdman: I liked it more than I expected to (genuinely thought 'I cannae be arsed with this' at the start). Michael Keaton is such a watchable, generous actor who does comedy, anger and tragedy so well and I'm rooting for him for Best Actor.

I haven't seen The Theory of Everything or The Imitation Game but would like to. I don't fancy Grand Budapest Hotel because i can't deal with Wes Anderson's twee manchild schtick.

I hope Ida wins in the Foreign Language category - that's one of the best films i've seen in ages, really beautiful.

I would have loved Scarlett Johansson to get some recognition for Under the Skin. She was brilliant.

LucilleBluth · 22/02/2015 15:29

Gone Girl was fun but I agree, not Oscar worthy. Grand Budapest Hotel is beautiful, I do love Wes Anderson though. Theory of Everything was good but Eddy Redmane was doing an impression iykwim, he was amazing but not like Keaton.

shouldnthavegoogledit · 22/02/2015 17:43

Nachohousekeeper ... I'm so jealous!! :-)

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 22/02/2015 17:55

Selma should have received far more nominations - especially one for for David Oyelowo. An academy member said in the Guardian that it wasn't artistic enough and while it's true it's a straight chronological account with minimal flourishes, it's still a very controlled piece of historical film making. Similar to Lincoln which had plenty of noms.

I disliked The Imitation Game a lot. I felt Cumberbatch's performance was glib and inconsistent and jumping around the timelines was distracting. I am a bit of a Bletchley geek and felt it was a dumbed down version for American audiences.

Not a Wes Anderson fan (lol at the PP who said manchild) but Grand Budapest is just fun - and a comedy being recognised is a rare event.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 22/02/2015 17:58

My red carpet predictions are Reese and Julianne Moore to look amazing and Rosamund Pike to try too hard and get it wrong.

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2015 19:02

What channel are you watching it on? I'm taping the highlights tomorrow.

TourGuideBarbie · 22/02/2015 19:07

It's on one of the movie channels, with red carpet first on E.

awaynboilyurheid · 22/02/2015 19:17

Grand Budapest Hotel is just awful , a bit emperors new clothes , hope The theory of everything wins or the Imitation game both really good films.

Aliiiii · 22/02/2015 20:05

I loved loved loved the Grand Budapest Hotel
I watched it with my mum, and I admit initially we were like wtf??! But stuck with it and so glad I did
Fiennes is such a versatile actor

AlpacaPicnic · 22/02/2015 20:31

Omg! My thread has been stickied and hijacked by one of teammumsnet! Literally my best day ever.
I am counting down the hours now. I have snacks consisting of Doritos and dips, cheese and pineapple on sticks and sweet'n'salt popcorn.
I have a blanket. I have tomorrow off work. I'm all ready :)

Hello fellow oscar watchers!

GettingFiggyWithIt · 22/02/2015 20:34

Alpaca, am well Envy of your snacks...can you paca your picnic and bring it to Germany please? Pro sieben won't start for a while yet and we're an hour ahead so you might just make it!Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 22/02/2015 20:38

Of course! What type of cheese do you like? I've got mature chedders, Edam and smoked...

I feel sorry for Bendydick too Figgy but it's pretty much going to be Eddie Redmayne in that performance. I feel that imitation game could have done better if Theory of Everything was released next year...

On a purely bitchy note, who's going to look like a wally in a silly dress this year? I am ever hopeful of Gwyneth Paltrow, she just seems to get it a bit wrong every time...

Ooh mature cheddar, always mature cheddar although that said, I would take any british cheese to be honest. Can only get kerrygold pretend cheddar or cathedral city here...miss cheshire, gloucester, caerphilly, the lot.
Have yet to see all these films as have to wait for amazon to have them in original languageSad Was Shock that Lego movie did not get a nomination though! Is big hero 6 worth taking the little ones to?

GettingFiggyWithIt · 22/02/2015 20:46

Not bitchy at all...dress watching is part of the fun. RIP joan rivers x
Think Keira or Rosamund might mess it up.
Worst dresses i can recall...Cher, Bjork bless her with a swan, anne hathaway

GettingFiggyWithIt · 22/02/2015 20:48

Emma Stone on the other hand usually looks stunning

Tch at it being on Sky Movies which I don't have. But I will watch live from the red carpet on E! Julianne Moore will look great.

TourGuideBarbie · 22/02/2015 21:59

I have a blanket, wine (to be opened much later at the risk of making me sleepy!) and my DH taking DD to school in the morning...

Perfect!

TourGuideBarbie · 22/02/2015 22:01

Keira has been dressing her bump terribly....

Reese Witherspoon always looks lovely I think!

Giuliana Rancic has posted a picture of herself ready on the red carpet in a long lacy white dress... Eek!!

BossWitch · 22/02/2015 22:18

Buggering buggering buggerton. I am on mat leave and could actually stay up and watch for the first time ever and I DON'T HAVE SODDING SKY!

BagelwithButter · 22/02/2015 22:27

Red carpet and ceremony is on Sky Oscars

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 22/02/2015 22:29

Hellooo! Can anyone recommend a decent live blog (with photos!) for those of us sans Sky or E so we can keep up Wink

The Guardian is usually good at such things but I can't find any evidence this year.

I'm mostly interested in the red carpet Wine
