Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

Come on, admit it, we know you've read the book, and we reckon loads of you have got it on your Kindle just so you can read it in secret.
It might have got a bit weird with Jamie Dornan being a serial killer in The Fall, but we're sure he's put all that stuff behind him now and thrown himself into his new role as the enigmatic Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.
He's made a lovely job of it in the . So it would be rude to not pop along and take a look, you know, just so we all can educate ourselves and give a considered opinion.
It seems Jamie did his research into BDSM and had this to say:
?It?s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it?
Are you prepared to ADMIT you'll be going?

Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

'Call it female intuition'.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/01/2015 16:45

The first ever thread in the Movies topic was posted on 27th March 2004.

Um?

wreckingball · 08/01/2015 16:47

Jeez, you lot just don't get it do you?

CrispyFern · 08/01/2015 16:49

Not going to watch it, not read the book. Everyone says the book is shit. I can't remember a single person telling me it was good.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 08/01/2015 16:50

chaos, they might have moved threads into it?

BriarRainbowshimmer · 08/01/2015 16:51

I’m sure there are wiser ways to bring attention to the movie board/trolling MN posters or whatever you were doing, than promoting a movie based on a book glamorizing domestic violence.

SolidGoldBrass · 08/01/2015 16:52

I have plans with a couple of mates to go and see it and snort and make remarks all the way through because it sounds as though it's going to be unintentionally hilarious.

However, I am happy that MN has started this thread because it means I can plug MY BDSM book again. And mention my erotica slam nights and the big debate on women, consent and sex that I'm speaking at and..... Sorry HQ but you did rather leave me a nice open goal.

momb · 08/01/2015 16:52

I've already posted on here about 50 shades and admitted to reading it. Several times in fact. It is dreadfully written, trite, teenager/angsty in tone with adult theme. I don't like Christian Grey's character at all and thank god am not in, nor ever have been or will be in such a relationship, but I did enjoy the books in an escapist way, probably because I spend the rest of my days reading dry academic tomes and have little time for novels at all.
However I won't be going to see the film. It was embarrassing enough going to see the Twilight movies with my teenage DD and her friend, and I did judge the adult women I recognised in the cinema. If it comes on Netflix eventually I might have a look then, but DH wouldn't enjoy it so maybe not.....

ArcheryAnnie · 08/01/2015 16:56

Why would I have bothered to read Fifty Shades of Grey - which is bad Twilight fanfic with the serial numbers filed off - when there is much better-written stuff on archiveofourown.org/ for free?

Same with the movie. If I really wanted to watch a man treating a woman badly (I don't), I could just look around me.

EauRouge · 08/01/2015 16:57

I'd rather shit in my hands and clap.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/01/2015 16:59

EauRouge you said it much more succinctly that I did!

GettingFiggyWithIt · 08/01/2015 17:02

Well I'll watch it on my own then! Wink
I found the book hysterical and me and dh adopted 'Oh my' for all future piss taking.
But I will be watching it on dvd because I don't want to watch bad sex scenes in the cinema. On dvd however when we can piss ourselves laughing without upsetting other filmgoers, yep I'm up for that. Plus I want to see how the director ( Sam taylor wood?) deals with a popcorn trashy film plot and how they cobbled a script out of it. Also interested in Jamie Dornan as the man can act and whether Melanie G/Don Johnson's daughter Dakota is any good in it.
Plus it will be an extra film to compare with so bad it's bad films like Showgirls or whether it is actually watchable like Secretary.
Gets the popcorn. Puts on a hardhat.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/01/2015 17:07

Jeanne, you may be right. Semm to remember a Film Reviews topic previously?

PatriciaHolm · 08/01/2015 17:10

There's been a movies topic for years, you've just made a link to it higher in the topic hierarchy! Hardly ground breaking, come on.

Still doesn't excuse the woefully patronising and horribly unMN OP, though.

CaptainAnkles · 08/01/2015 17:14

I'm not giving anyone to do with it any more of my money. I bought the books on my Kindle because everyone was banging on about them but I'm not paying out a tenner to watch someone bite their lip and say 'oh my.'

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 08/01/2015 17:34

Apologies if what was posted above has irked. Absolutely NOT our intention.

To paraphrase Baby's dad Doctor Houseman: "When we're wrong we say we're wrong"

Personally I bought the books, as I wanted to see what the hype was about but agree with many of you that it didn't live up to the hype for many a reason and I won't be seeing the film. and not just cos I've only been to the cinema twice since DS1 was born

But it will be one of those that will be discussed aplenty everywhere so do forgive us on that one.

But I did watch that Emily Blunt Tom Cruise one last night on DVD with DH. which I was expecting to HATE and found it quite good actually.

Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?
BOFster · 08/01/2015 17:42

Emily Blunt can rescue any movie- she's brilliant but I don't think even she would redeem 50 Shades Of Grey.

Clarabumps · 08/01/2015 17:53

Fuck, no!

grimbletart · 08/01/2015 18:25

No - didn't read a shit book. Shan't see a shit film.

We started this thread to kick off discussion in our shiny new Movies topic (ain't she a beaut?) and we thought that since 50 Shades is an upcoming release that lots of you would have strong feelings about, it would be a good one to get the ball rolling - strikes me a little as backtracking?

And then another one appears......

Not read it, no intention of reading it, no intention of watching it.

The extract that I read in The Guardian years ago was enough to convince me that the books were absolute rubbish. And I speak as one who reads quite a lot of trashy paranormal erotic fiction.
So no I wont be going.

And I dont hide any book I read, by the way. Im a grown up with my own home so dont need to sneak around!

I am looking forward to seeing Cinderella with the DCs in March though!

RosyAuroch · 26/01/2015 12:45

Fuck no. And why the fuck has anyone thought "Oh great, abusive relationship flick, that'll be ideal for a Valentine's Day release". Dozen red roses, box of chocolates and preposterous shit flick about low self esteem and violent sexual abuse. Perfect triad for romance there. WTF?

heleddinlavender · 26/01/2015 16:12

Honestly I haven't read the book and have no intention of reading it BUT I will go to see the film for one important reason - I love Jamie!!
