Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

SandyMumsnet · 08/01/2015 12:49

Come on, admit it, we know you've read the book, and we reckon loads of you have got it on your Kindle just so you can read it in secret.
It might have got a bit weird with Jamie Dornan being a serial killer in The Fall, but we're sure he's put all that stuff behind him now and thrown himself into his new role as the enigmatic Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.
He's made a lovely job of it in the . So it would be rude to not pop along and take a look, you know, just so we all can educate ourselves and give a considered opinion.
It seems Jamie did his research into BDSM and had this to say:
?It?s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it?
Are you prepared to ADMIT you'll be going?

Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

Brew < that's a cup of cold sick, btw.

Spirael · 08/01/2015 15:33

I would rather rub freshly cut chillies in my eyes than read the book or see the film!

Hamiltoes · 08/01/2015 15:36

operator great link. A favourite line of mine...

"There are certain things about our relationship that sound like abuse, so I can't ever tell other people because they might think it was abuse, which it's not, but it's important I watch my words because if he thought I was calling him an abuser he might really do something awful."

And MN endorses this shit clutches pearls

JeanneDeMontbaston · 08/01/2015 15:38

Oh, Christ.

Thank goodness for sane people on this thread - MNHQ, what the fuck were you thinking?

If I were going to go to see it, I wouldn't be prissing around giggling behind my hand about 'secrets'. FFS, we're grown women.

I think that irritates me as much as the premise of the book itself, which is indeed a shower of shite, as others have pointed out better than me.

AskYourOperator · 08/01/2015 15:40

ANewMe2015

Please don't think that what happens in 50SOG is in anyway reflective of a healthy BDSM relationship.

My advice would be to research a bit on some forums. Reddit has a very good BDSM community for a start and I'm pretty sure there's been threads on there about films which are actually a good representation of "the lifestyle"

wreckingball · 08/01/2015 15:40

Isn't the OP coming back?

Newshoesplease · 08/01/2015 15:51

Nope. No desire to read or watch.

PatriciaHolm · 08/01/2015 15:53

Oh for heavens sake. Never read it , no interest in it, but quite frankly it's deeply patronising to assume that anyone who wants to see it will be giggling behind their hands and afraid to admit it anyway. How much has mumsnet been paid to promote this crap?

ANewMe2015 · 08/01/2015 15:59

Ask - I KNOW it isn't representative, but as we aren't ready to go and play in public it might be interesting even if inaccurate.

We've read a fair bit online but usually about dynamics - will check out the reddit thread for films - thanks :)

notonyourninny · 08/01/2015 16:03

Me!!!!

MirandaWest · 08/01/2015 16:10

I won't be going to see it. And like others I find it odd that Mumsnet appears to be promoting it.

WannaBe · 08/01/2015 16:12

I read the first book and didn't read the rest. It was shite.

I just watched the traylor, and thought it was bloody creepy. Do bear in mind that I am VI so was going on the audio alone but still.... if you close your eyes and listen to the traylor....

Why are you promoting this crap.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 08/01/2015 16:13

If I were going to go to see it, I wouldn't be prissing around giggling behind my hand about 'secrets'. FFS, we're grown women.

No no Jeanne don't you understand that giggling about things like abusive relationships and keeping them secret like Anastasia in 50SOG is what grown women should be doing, right? She is our rolemodel!

But really, even if this book wasn't shite, even if it wasn't all about portraying abuse as sexy and positive, c'mon giggling and acting coy isn't MN style, what the hell is going on here.

ZingTheGreat · 08/01/2015 16:14

you said sex!Shock

123rd · 08/01/2015 16:20

I read the first book. Which was unbelievably shite. No more risqué than a good old jackie Collins back in the day. And the trailer has done nothing to make me think the film will be any better.
And yes, I agree. Why are mumsnet even posting about it?

JeanneDeMontbaston · 08/01/2015 16:20

Oh, silly me, briar. My stupid ladybrain.

Incidentally, is it just me, or is the OP using 'hoicks bosoms' in a non-MN-appropriate way? It's usually used to indicate indignation, right?

Or maybe her inner feminist made a brief bid for freedom there?

KateSMumsnet · 08/01/2015 16:29

Hullo all,

Call it female intuition, but we're getting the sneaking feeling you're not very excited about 50 Shades. Which of course, is absolutely fine.

We started this thread to kick off discussion in our shiny new Movies topic (ain't she a beaut?) and we thought that since 50 Shades is an upcoming release that lots of you would have strong feelings about, it would be a good one to get the ball rolling. There's nothing more to it than that really. You're more than welcome to start a thread here saying why you hate 50 Shades and how wild BDSM horses couldn't drag you there.

There's a bit more info about our new Movies topic here, and please do let us know what you think!

If 50 Shades doesn't tickle you, what are you looking forward to seeing this year?

ouryve · 08/01/2015 16:34

No.

And no, I didn't read any more than a rather tedious extract from the book.

ZingTheGreat · 08/01/2015 16:35

Kate

hi, nice new topic.

DH is taking kids next week to see "Night at the museum 3".
I'd go but I can't cope with the trapdoor seats in cinemas so I never go any more.Sad
probably not what you want to hear, but it's sofa & Netflix for me.

good luck and Happy New Year

Trooperslane · 08/01/2015 16:35

Oh Jesus no.

On hols a couple of years ago in Greece every other woman had a copy in a pile of different languages.

I downloaded it on my kindle to see what the fuss was about and got to about page 5 when the horrific writing made me delete it.

Don't blame JD for doing it, could be massive for his career. I'll just hang off til his next 'proper' role. (And he certainly has the bod for it)

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/01/2015 16:36

Seriously, HQ?

This could be the death MNell.

AskYourOperator · 08/01/2015 16:37

Fuck me, how patronising. Hmm

Hamiltoes · 08/01/2015 16:37

MN you didn't ask us if we had strong feelings on it, you asked us if we were going to ADMIT to going to see it.

As if everyone on here would obviously be going to see it but only some of us would admit it Hmm

Oh and what a way to change the subject? How about we just agree YABU and forget that whole first post ever happened so my eyebrow can go back to its original position.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 08/01/2015 16:39

KateS.

Smile

Great to be increasing footfall to a shiny new topic by encouraging debate, but that wasn't really how the OP if this thread came across.

MadameOvary · 08/01/2015 16:39

I read one page in a bookshop and it was so shit I couldn't read any more. Not even Jamie Dornan will make me see this nonsense.
WTF is MN doing with this giggly girly crap?
Nethuns is that way ===>
