Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

Come on, admit it, we know you've read the book, and we reckon loads of you have got it on your Kindle just so you can read it in secret.
It might have got a bit weird with Jamie Dornan being a serial killer in The Fall, but we're sure he's put all that stuff behind him now and thrown himself into his new role as the enigmatic Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey.
He's made a lovely job of it in the . So it would be rude to not pop along and take a look, you know, just so we all can educate ourselves and give a considered opinion.
It seems Jamie did his research into BDSM and had this to say:
?It?s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it?
Are you prepared to ADMIT you'll be going?

Fifty Shades of Grey - will you succumb?

I certainly don't fancy watching it in the cinema... All that heavy breathing will put me right off my smuggled in malteasers.
I'll probably watch it when it's free on Netflix or TV. I quite like a shit film now and then...

IHeartChristmasMoomies · 29/01/2015 19:11

Nope. Didn't chance the book and am not arsed about the film.

chipsandpeas · 29/01/2015 19:16

wont go but wll download a copy and watch

I think I may have missed something here, it's been a while since I read the book, but isn't the point that he is abusive and controlling, and at the end she tells him to f off? Isn't that quite a good thing to happen? I don't think she was trying to accurately portray a healthy relationship, BDSM or otherwise. He's clearly a nutter. I didn't bother reading the other books so I have no idea how things turn out but I remember really liking the ending of the first one.

On a different note - Jamie Dornan is just divine. Wink

Yes, definitely

moggiek · 13/02/2015 20:57

Thought the book was so bad it was funny, least erotic prose I've ever read. Wouldn't consider wasting time on the film!

mumsnet

I'm sorry you've received such vociferous responses on this thread but it's clear that the bulk of the mumsnet community are not fans. That's not to say that they all aren't and I'm sure many are keen and don't agree with the protestations, especially before the screening.

Anyway, the books are of no interest to me but my wife has enjoyed the series for what they are. I trust her judgement, being one of the most balanced individuals I know, and she rather enjoyed the film. It's not going to win any awards but was entertaining nonetheless.

LividofLondinium · 14/02/2015 18:21

It strikes me as a load of crap and no way would I pay to watch it. But if I can stream it for free online somewhere I might give it a go just to see how awful it really is.

StillLostAtTheStation · 15/02/2015 10:56

Have not read the book, have no intention of reading the book nor seeing the film.

Can't stand Sam Taylor Add Husband's Name and was delighted to see it got terrible reviews.

Last film seen was Whiplash. Several plot holes but engaging performance from Miles Teller and J K Simmons is always good.

EmGee · 16/02/2015 13:26

Saw it last night. Was quite watchable. Depends on your expectations. Mine were low. Cinema was packed. Quite a lot of giggling from groups of women.

NickAngel · 16/02/2015 13:29

No.
It looks appallingly cringeingly crapulous

The80sweregreat · 16/02/2015 19:10

BDSM - i passed my driving test with them in 1986! No, wont be seeing the film. Read some reviews of the books- most were scathing. Inner goddess indeed.. ( jamie seems a nice bloke in real life, why did he get mixed up n this ?l. Money probably)

Davros · 16/02/2015 23:36

Fifty Grades of Shite! Won't be going, 2 hours you will never get back.

ClareRawson · 04/05/2015 15:48

I loved Fifty shades of Grey. Found the sex a little dull after a while. Blow Row is far better written. The characters more real. It was released last week and I've fallen in and out of love with the dominant McGregor.

chaiselounger · 01/07/2015 17:51

I watched the DVD. I really liked it. I am ashamed to admit that.

chaiselounger · 01/07/2015 17:57

And I'm not a fan of EL James and her 'writing style' and I do think the book is abusive rather than BDSM. But I was intrigued. And I love Jamie Dornan in The Fall.
And I thought the director, directed it well, given the quality of the books she was given.

ASettlerOfCatan · 02/07/2015 23:44

No no no to film and book. Both sound shockingly awful, totally not my thing and the themes disturb me. Seems like it is a very irresponsible portrayal of bdsm which is very different in reality from the abuse the books apparently show.
