Women only tube carriages

labamba18 · 24/10/2025 19:45

A petition has reached 10,000 signatures for women only tube carriages.

This makes me so angry. I remember being harassed on public transport as a young woman and hoped that things would get better not worse.

But, as much as I think it’s awful that women still have to put up with this in 2025, I hate the idea of separate carriages. It feels like the laziest way of trying to stop the problem.

What do you think?

I doubt there’ll be enough carriages

Nitgel · 24/10/2025 19:47

I go on the tube everyday and don't think we need women only carriages. Plus would be impossible to police as not enough staff as it is.

ilparadodosdoltos · 24/10/2025 19:47

How would it be policed?

Algen · 24/10/2025 19:49

Chances of getting people to move along the platforms so you can actually access the carriage would be zero anyway.

I don’t think it’s needed, and would make arrogant men think that women should only be in the designated carriage.

More effective policing of behaviour would be more useful.

labamba18 · 24/10/2025 19:50

Yes, TFL have already said they are against it (probably for that reason). But even if it could be policed I’m against it.

This is such a ridiculous idea. So unworkable. Blatantly obvious that men will be queuing for a spot in a carriage that is supposedly all women.

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/10/2025 19:52

Corbyn suggested this years ago. I think it's bloody stupid, as someone who has travelled on public transport late at night to get home from work. When being harassed good men intervene. Of course it ceased being a problem for me when the bus company decided it was too dangerous to run buses in my area after 7pm. So I had to walk.

I think most men have no idea with the amount of crap women have to put up with.

Blackcountryexile · 24/10/2025 19:55

I prefer tube trains with the through carriages. The most aggravation I've had recently is from drunk women and large parties of women knocking into people and making lots of noise.

AltitudeCheck · 24/10/2025 19:56

What about when it's quiet and the women's carriage becomes a potential target? I'd probably choose rhe perceived safety of a busy carriage than risk being singled out as a lone woman.

zzplea · 24/10/2025 19:59

Nowadays some Tube trains don't have doors between the carriages, you can just walk through them all. So that wouldn't work to separate the carriages.

I think the argument years ago, which would still apply, is that women sitting in the mixed carriages could be more at risk because they would comprise a smaller proportion of passengers compared with men, because other women would be in the women-only carriages. Plus victim-blaming if something happened to a woman who had chosen to sit in a mixed carriage - "Why didn't you sit in the women-only carriage?".

PeonyPatch · 24/10/2025 20:01

I don’t agree with the idea because I think we need to hold the perpetrators (men) to account.

On the other hand, I do like the idea because I have little faith that men are going to change, and this somehow feels like the next best way to keep women and girls safe(r).

I don’t think it can be policed effectively.

Ddakji · 24/10/2025 20:02

Can’t we have a “noisy selfish twats who refuse to use headphones” carriage?

As others have said, impossible on lines with through carrraiges. I’m an old bag so no idea who’s bad being hassled is for young women these days, I don’t get any bother.

I’d rather they bring in guards for all kinds of bad behaviour.

Algen · 24/10/2025 20:03

Yes please. Preferably on the roof of the train.

hellowhaaat3632 · 24/10/2025 20:05

That's crazy, it'll make the non women carriage more dangerous. Men will think oh she's up for it be cause she dares be here

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/10/2025 20:13

Yeah. No. This is not okay.

user1471538275 · 24/10/2025 20:20

No to segregation of women 'for their safety'

What's next - women must always be accompanied by a male relative 'for their safety'

Women should stay at home 'for their safety'

Women should wear modest clothing only 'for their safety'

No, no and bloody hell no.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/10/2025 20:22

Yes @user1471538275 🙌🙌🙌🙌

onlytherain · 24/10/2025 22:53

It doesn't look as if we as a society hold perpetrators to account, does it? It also doesn't look as if that will change any time soon.

To those who say they use the tube daily and are not getting harassed: congratulations! I will tell my daughter who was harassed by a man on the tube four days ago. And my neighbour, whose daughter was harassed on the tube and then followed by a man a week ago. Maybe they did something wrong?

I am also doubtful that women only carriages are the answer, but maybe the tube should trial them.

PollyBell · 24/10/2025 23:06

So how does thia prevent women being harmed by the statistically more probable of coming to harm by the men thry have relationships with and ignore all the red flags?

Maybe we should go back to the dark ages and not let woman out unchaperoned?

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/10/2025 23:12

onlytherain - no one on this thread has said that.

Edited

I don’t understand where is anyone saying that women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted have done anything wrong here?

I’m sorry for your neighbour’s daughter. I wish things were better.

Oh so because YOU haven’t had any problems that means we don’t need it!

How old are you?! Because predators target young vulnerable girls, often under age girls. Are you in that category?!

MissKitty0 · 24/10/2025 23:52

They either need actual 24/7 security guard ON the trains (not a phone number you ring after they’ve escaped) or separate carriages.

parietal · 24/10/2025 23:57

More staff would be a much better investment.

This is wrong for all the reasons @user1471538275said.
