Women only tube carriages

A petition has reached 10,000 signatures for women only tube carriages.

This makes me so angry. I remember being harassed on public transport as a young woman and hoped that things would get better not worse.

But, as much as I think it’s awful that women still have to put up with this in 2025, I hate the idea of separate carriages. It feels like the laziest way of trying to stop the problem.

But your next point is valid. They should have staff/security on the trains who will actually act when something happens

We have them in Mexico City and they're brilliant. Women and children under twelve travel in them. The rest of the carriages are mixed.

Travelled somewhere in my 20's that had woman only carriages, but as I was travelling with 2 men it was possible to go into the mixed carriages which were in fact all male - the wondering, groping hands from every direction in a crowded carriage was unbearable. I think I was seen as' up for it' or 'deserving of being degraded', by the mere fact of not sticking to the woman only carriage. Can I just also say (not that it should matter) that I always dressed very modestly, in a bid to be a respectful visitor in that country. Perhaps I was singled out as a foreigner, but I'm fairly certain any woman was an open target. My female friend and I caught a public bus down the length of the country - we opted for an air conditioned one with a TV. We were the only females. The TV played violent porn tapes the whole journey (1990's - really hope things have improved since!).

So I agree with you Op - the de facto segregation of women would be a massive step backwards and not achieve what it set out to achieve. In fact, the polar opposite.

In a way I am heartened to read the objections to such a proposal, all the reasons why have been set out.

I think it’s a stupid idea BUT I think the petition will shed light on the issue for plenty of good men who are oblivious to the issues woman face, So for that reason I’m pleased it’s being talked about.

I’ve gotten the tube nearly every day for fifteen years and have never been groped, even on the night tube. Other countries have massive issues with this though, I can see the need for it there.

there was a woman who got bloody raped on the tube in front of other passengers. theres no denying it happens. what to do about it is a different question.

I would be against this for all the reasons PP have said. Plus I imagine some men would therefore assume that all the other carriages were for men only.

I'm a feminist but still think it's a good idea, like maybe one or 2 women only carriages. The best thing would be for them to be normal and create seperate seats for everyone so noone needs to sit next to another stranger on the train.

For a female rape, stalking, sexual harrassment victim, this could help alot. I'm a brown woman and have been sexually harrassed by a gang of male neighbours, all racist of a certain colour- I am now jumpy around alot of men who look like this- this is an offshoot of the ptsd ive suffered due to months of it. I think this could help, also for women who culturally are not so open with men it's good to cater to them.

Noone said that. Some women from DIFFERENT CULTURES do not FEEL COMFORTABLE talking openly with men as it's A PART OF THEIR CULTURE. Do you understand that? Not everyone has the WHITE BRITISH CULTURE, some people whos grandparents were born here HAVE A DIFFERENT CULTURE. I'm writing in caps as you seem to be extremely slow so hopefully you understand. Some of these people are millionaires and multimillionaires and CONTRIBUTE TO THE UK MORE THAN MANY WHITE BRITISH PEOPLE. And vice versa. In the UK, there are MANY CULTURES not just your culture. Grow up.

When I first got to England, from another western country, a man exposed himself to me on one of first trains I ever went on alone. I was a young teenager. So not sure what you're trying to say.

I don’t want to have to be segregated because people have moved here and want to impose their culture on the rest of us.

You're imposing your culture onto them, noone wants to be forced to be like You. All cultures should be respected, many Brits are Brown Second and Third Generation British Citizens. Not sure I follow. What does a woman being raped on the tube have to do with racism, was it a racially motivated attack?
