Good for him. Encouragingly, the comments I’ve seen on another site where this was posted are almost entirely supportive of banning surrogacy, which I wasn’t expecting.

Pope Francis calls for universal ban on practice of surrogacy

His comments on the “commercialisation” of pregnancy came as part of a foreign policy address to ambassadors.

Its good to see the religious community actually standing up for something for once, they usually just go along with things sadly, which isn't their role. They should be at the absolute forefront of so many issues in society although i know the catholic church does huge amounts in education and alleviating poverty. This is welcome seeing as the bloody midwives have just tried to frame it as a diversity positive issue.

Its illegal to remove puppies and kittens from their mother at birth FGS.

StragglyTinsel · 09/01/2024 18:16

Good to see that he’s actually called it what it is. Clear terms like commercialisation, exploitation and trafficking.

It amazes me that surrogacy is presented as some utopian ideal by anyone.

I don’t often find myself in alignment with the Catholic Church. But I totally agree with the pope on surrogacy.

PurpleBugz · 09/01/2024 19:49

It's nice to see him say "“I consider despicable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs.”

Cantering women and children. Not saying we playing god or that if a person can't have children we should be accepting it as gods will. No comments on the duty of women to give their husband children. Well done pope!

DarkDarkNight · 09/01/2024 19:52

I agree. I think it’s horribly exploitative.

Buffypaws · 09/01/2024 19:55

Good. I saw some absolutely disgusting advert the other day where you register as a surrogate and get a fucking Ann summers gift card. Utterly dystopian vomit.

AlltheFs · 09/01/2024 19:56

This is the first time I have ever agreed with the Catholic Church! Bravo 👏
Surrogacy is abhorrent.

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 09/01/2024 19:58

Excellent, women and children centred absolutely!

MissyB1 · 09/01/2024 20:00

I’m really pleased to see he’s doing this. Time somebody called it what it is!

What's working with gay couples have a male child?

similarminimer · 09/01/2024 22:42

Yes! Reproductive rights according to the Pope! We can all get on board with that, with no qualms!

How helpful of you!
Do you support the exploitation of women?

HoppingPavlova · 10/01/2024 06:24

Probably first time I’ve ever agreed with the Catholic Church/a Pope. Hopefully their followers at least take note and it may start others thinking.

Pigeotto · 10/01/2024 06:25

I’m not sure why people are so against this? Pregnancy and childbirth are savage on your body so if you could avoid that I don’t understand why you couldn’t pay if everyone was consenting and the child was obviously going to a very wanted home. Unless there’s evidence otherwise

Pemba · 10/01/2024 06:46

@Pigeotto oh my goodness you need to do a lot of reading around this and just THINK. You seem to regard employing a surrogate to carry a baby as similar to hiring a nanny, it is completely different. The 'surrogate' (birth mother) literally builds the child within her body (yes, even if it's not her egg). The baby's whole world is her, the sound of her voice etc. Then they are ripped apart, often immediately after birth. We don't even do that to puppies and kittens.

'If everyone was consenting', um aren't you forgetting someone? The baby cannot consent to this (and would not if they could speak). Who is looking out for them?? The situation is ripe for exploitation of poor and or vulnerable and naive women. Babies should not be ordered up like choosing a pizza, it's wrong.

Theemptydollshouse · 10/01/2024 06:55

Pregnancy and childbirth are savage on your body

So why would you inflict that on another woman?

A woman who is desperate for money to feed her family isn't really consenting.

Newsenmum · 10/01/2024 07:00

@lovelysoap to be fair, you can’t take kittens and puppies away from their mother because they are not given an alternative mother. The whole point of surrogacy is that they immediately go to their intended mother and get that immediate bond. The newborn isn’t suddenly living as an adult human without milk and comfort.

Ye, it can be savage, so don’t inflict it on someone in a worse financial situation than you. Fgs.

WandaWonder · 10/01/2024 07:11

I don't and will never agree on surrogacy under any circumstances so don't disagree but will they change their view on abortion?

It is alright for them to pick and choose when it suits

StragglyTinsel · 10/01/2024 07:44

It is possible that the pope could be right about this and still wrong about lots of other things. There’s no need to adopt the Catholic Church position wholesale just because you agree with something the pope said.

I cannot believe that someone has come on this thread to say they don’t understand what all the fuss is about because pregnancy is ‘savage’ on the body so of course you should be able to outsource it if you can afford it.🤯

The problem is both the exploitation of women’s bodies and the commodification and trafficking of infants. Awful. The international baby trade is abhorrent.

Pigeotto · 10/01/2024 07:53

But doesn’t the surrogate usually stay in their lives too or is that just celebrities that can afford it? And they’re hardly trafficked, from the hospital to their home? Or am I missing something again.

Might be a tangent but everyone on here is typing on an iPhone which so many children in Africa are exploited everyday to get the base components or minerals for and we’re not calling so passionately for those to banned.

Perfectlystill · 10/01/2024 07:56

Rich Americans won't like this!

ButterCrackers · 10/01/2024 08:07

The Pope and team need to stop and report to the law the child abusers in their church - only when this is done imo can they say anything about child protection.

Yes, you are missing something .

No the surrogate doesn’t usually stay in their lives. You sound like you don’t know anything about this.
