Absolutely shocked and sickened by this. Ive always liked Brooke Shields and am appalled she has been through all this.

Brooke Shields on her mother encouraging her to pose nude for Playboy aged 10, 'I don’t know why she thought it was right'

Brooke Shields opened up about being sexually exploited as a child and her challenging relationship with her mother, Teri Shields

I was really shocked to read this today. It wasn't that long ago. A ten year old nude in playboy? How was it justified? How could anyone even buy that? I can't get my head around child porn ever being socially acceptable like that.

I'm assuming the movie is banned now? What on earth was the director thinking and the actor who took part.

The whole thing is sickening.

xPaz · 28/03/2023 18:18

It's awful that her mother offered up like that. If she'd gone of the rails a bit, it would have been understandable but she's always come across as sensible and not at all self-sabotaging. Not surprising it's difficult to process that your MOTHER traded your happy childlike state for $$$$

Name5 · 28/03/2023 18:25

I am thinking the toffee poster is a man? If not shame on you as a sister. Shame on you as a man.
I was a teen model and offered page 3 at 16 (early 80s). I declined the £25 and coke that went with it. However an interesting point is there is no time limit on abuse and sexual exploitation. If I was as rich as Ms Shields I would looking to seek a prosecution of all living parties to those photos (The estate of Hugh Hefner, The photographer etc). If they own the IP not Ms Shields they would have a hard job saying she knew what she was doing.
Disgusting affair.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 28/03/2023 18:25

I cannot get my head round a 10 year old child appearing in a pornographic publication. Wtaf?

But parents exploiting their children like this is sadly as old as the hills. Actress, Natalie Wood’s mother was also guilty of the sexual exploitation of her daughter.

Agree! I'm shocked, beyond disturbing

Boogismyname · 28/03/2023 18:32

It's incomprehensible, isn't it. I'm actually surprised she hasn't more mental health issues in later life.
Vile.
I hate her mother automatically.

Boogismyname · 28/03/2023 18:35

She said that at the time, it wouldn't have occurred to her that she could have said no. Completely inslaved and not allowed an opinion.
It's always more than the sexual act....I've been through it myself.

Boogismyname · 28/03/2023 18:37

The playboy shoot at aged 10 was abhorrent and I can't understand why her mother put her through that. Why?????
I think it was put in an art gallery in later years and I think Brooke tried to get it taken down but she didn't have a right to the images.
So horrible.

Some of the pasta on this thread that have been left to stand are victim blaming

Brooke Shields comes from a family of wealth — and royalty. Her paternal grandmother, Donna Marina Torlonia, was an Italian princess. The Torlonias were a wealthy banking family. Brooke's parents also did well financially.

Brooke is currently worth $40,000,000

I don't understand what this has to do with anything.

Name5 · 28/03/2023 18:42

@Boogismyname this I think I remember that's why I said about the IP. In the UK this would be making and retaining indecent images. Depending on the state and the USA law I'd still have a go. The people involved need brining to task. I'd be really fecking angry.

@Name5 certain things like this make me glad I don't live in America, and I don't hate the country.

TennisWithDeborah · 28/03/2023 23:00

The opera singer Maria Callas had a similar kind of mother. She tried to pimp Maria out to soldiers during the war and when Maria was sexually assaulted, her mother told her that she should’ve gone along with it and obtained some money from the guy.

Yes….some people are unfit to be parents.

Unrelated, I loved Shields as River Fields (!) in Jane the Virgin. Great comedy skills.

Valeriekat · 29/03/2023 01:58

"Pretty Baby" was about a child in a New Orleans Brothel basically being sold off to the highest bidder. The director Louis Malle was highly respected and reputable. Film critics for the BBC (Barry Norman) couldn't praise the film highly enough for its cinematography and her beauty. I was 5 years older than her and utterly horrified at the time about the subject matter. The title tells you that they knew it was paedophilic.
I think Blue Lagoon in some ways was even worse because of the nudity.

Throwaway0323 · 29/03/2023 14:25

I just came here looking for a thread after reading about this elsewhere.

I can't get my head around how many people must have been involved in putting a ten year old child in a porn mag.

Not one of them stopped it. I feel actually sick.

It’s many years since I saw it but, IIRC, Pretty Baby does at least pay some attention to the main character’s lack of choices and acknowledges she is forced into prostitution (albeit a very sanitised version). It would not have been that shocking if BS had been a young adult when filming it. I’ve never seen Blue Lagoon, but my impression is that is straight-up soft porn.

With both though, it’s unbelievable - even for the 70s - that no one involved in the production thought, “Hold on, this is a child”.

Poor Brooke. She is incredibly strong to have survived this.

Valeriekat · 30/03/2023 10:17

Yes it is soft core porn. She and Christopher Atkins are pretty much naked for the whole movie. Supposedly older body doubles were used for some scenes.

drspouse · 30/03/2023 10:53

I read about this the other day and I am younger than her but thought, looking back, I'd thought she was quite cool and was cross I wasn't allowed to watch BUT I now realise that was Blue Lagoon - it was heavily discussed at school with a few being allowed to watch even though it would have been an AA (14+).

And this is why teenagers shouldn't be allowed to safeguard themselves.

JenniferBooth · 04/04/2023 20:29

Did anyone watch the Pretty Baby documentary last night. I cant get Disney+ so cant watch it.

Her mother should be ashamed. How was this even legal?! Poor Brooke. What a trauma. Hopefully she has had the help she needs as an adult to process this.
