Absolutely shocked and sickened by this. Ive always liked Brooke Shields and am appalled she has been through all this.

Brooke Shields on her mother encouraging her to pose nude for Playboy aged 10, 'I don’t know why she thought it was right'

Brooke Shields opened up about being sexually exploited as a child and her challenging relationship with her mother, Teri Shields

I’m honestly in shock. How did they justify it? What on earth was the logic that was sent out?

JenniferBooth · 28/03/2023 16:35

I had no idea this happened to her until yesterday I was only just reaching school age in the late 70s and dont remember Pretty Baby

WTF has the familys wealth got to do with it. Her mum basically pimping her out. Its all horrific

That sort of thing was disapproved of by many, but was unfortunately really common in the media in those days.

We had topless 16 year olds on page 3 of a national newspaper. Mandy Smith went on national chat shows as Bill Wymans 13/14 year old girlfriend. Comedy shows would routinely depict very young teens being perved over by older men, and it was portrayed as a lark, not creepy.

Saville often talked about his liking for young girls on camera. He hid in plain sight, didn't especially try to hide the fact that he was talking about teens.

I assume you feel the same of the hundreds of Jimmy Saville victims?

you must be severely lacking intelligence, not to mention empathy, to not know why a 10yo girl might not have questioned several adults, one of whom was her mother, as to the suitably of the work she was put forwards for.

Yes I'm really keen for @ToffeeNotCoffee to explain why they brought up the fact Brooke Shields is from a wealthy family, as it has absolutely zero relevance.

Ponderingwindow · 28/03/2023 16:43

I’m really curious about this documentary. If done well, it could not just tell her story, but illuminate the current societal pressure to sexualize teens and young women in our modern culture. I know hoping for a cultural shift is a lot to ask, but maybe people will make the connection to what was done to her and what is still being done today.

And let's not forget the countdown to Charlotte Church's 16th birthday.

I'm not quite old enough to remember, but the 70s were a period when sex with under-age girls was far more tolerated. It was normal for bands to sleep with under-age groupies. Even the sainted John Peel (beloved, avuncular UK DJ/radio personality, if you are too young to remember him) married a 15 year old when he was 26 (it was legal in Texas where he was living) and admitted to having repeatedly been given oral sex by a 13 year old. This did not stop him being essentially deified by the UK media right up to his death in 2004.

Then there was the campaign to legalise paedophilia, which managed to infiltrate various left-leaning organisations.

How paedophiles infiltrated the left and hijacked the fight for civil rights

A 1970s campaign to lower the age of consent has returned to haunt Harriet Harman, Patricia Hewitt and Jack Dromey. But in such a liberal climate, it wasn't hard for a small, determined group to exploit a commitment to free speech

I remember tv shows joking about the pervy creep who would always go for the youger girls. But it was still seen as ‘creepy’ even if more jokey. And the girls at least looked a bit more womanly if you see what I mean. A ten year old really does look like a child. Playboy werent just a bit ignorant about a teenager’s mental vs physical maturity. They really were displaying a child! I can’t get over it tbh.

None of what you are saying has any relevance to the fact that she was exploited, allowed to be exploited, not only by her Mother, but by people in the industry as well@ToffeeNotCoffee . Surely you are able to comprehend that? Maybe?

It's stated in the article. So you're commenting on a thread about an article you can't even be bothered to read.

That poster clearly has a very specific agenda.

Let's just be thankful that we're not the kind of person who gets their kicks by claiming child sexual exploitation is ok, provided the victim makes enough money from it.

LookingOldTheseDays · 28/03/2023 17:12

The fact that MN, a forum supposedly for women, is letting that posters comments stand is fucking disgusting. And yes, I have reported, and I bet I'm not the only one.

MN has changed a lot. And not for the better.

Your right@LookingOldTheseDays . I just don't understand how anyone could think that a child could be held in any way accountable for something like that.

Yes yes you’re a troll we get it. You blame kids for being abused if they’re rich afterwards. sure sure.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 28/03/2023 17:17

Don't engage at this point. At best, they're a troll, at worst, they actually believe it.

LookingOldTheseDays · 28/03/2023 17:18

They fucking well need banning, but I bet Mn won't because they have stopped just short of explicitly saying "It was her own fault she was exploited".

Or maybe even that wouldn't cross the MN line these days?

Choconut · 28/03/2023 17:47

Grim.
I watched Taxi Driver a few months back having heard of it but no idea what it was about.
Basically it's Jodie Foster as a 12 year old happy hooker who ran away from her (apparently caring) family because she fancied leaving home - and being a prostitute suited her. I mean yes Robert De Niro is trying to save her - but the happy child hooker message is just absolutely horrific.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 28/03/2023 17:55

?

RoseBucket · 28/03/2023 17:56

One of the reasons she is only talking about it now is because it was her normal because her mum was her manager and she never challenged and trusted her mum, and only when her own girl’s questioned it did she and even the she didn’t want to raise it out of respect for her mum.

She is now quite traumatised because she is now questioning everything about her upbringing. Poor woman certainly not her fault and very much lays with her mother and those other adults.

I doubt she received any money anyway! Only those exploiting her likely received any money.
