I interpreted it as: A-HA! I got you! How are you going to justify this now, Angela? I didn't see it as sexist or sleazy. He wasn't hitting on her. Men do wink at each other when joking or like 'got you' or 'keep it a secret' sort of thing. Who winks to flirt these days anyway?!

He reminded me of Ronaldo who I'm sure I have seen do it more than once to other footballers

What was the "got you" that you think the wink referred to @Soapy?

@TooBigForMyBoots That he pulled her up on her absence from where she was needed. He exposed her and she would need to explain and justify herself. It's a sparring argument. I don't know why the media is so keen to portray Angela as some femme fatale, twisting the narrative and making it out like they're all dying to shag her. It wasn't sexist or sexual.

You make it sound even worse @Soapy. WTF, he's speaking on behalf of the government in Parliament, not doing bants in the sixth form common room.

The lack of professionalism and misogyny is disgusting.

It’s very clear. Raab was saying that Raynor says she cares about working people but instead of supporting the train strikers/RMT (wink), Raynor was off at a music festival sipping champagne- so champagne socialism has returned to the Labour Party.
It was a ha ha got you partying it up like Marie Antoinette while working people suffer and protest for a fair living wage.

Would that be Dominic Raab of the MN GC feminists often heralded Conservative party?

Because proles like her should know her place and not get ideas above her station, am I right?

Or did Jerombly Cromblyn make him do it?

I didn’t see it as sexist? I saw it as ‘I’ve got you there haven’t I’ kind of wink, that would have been given to male colleagues in the same way?
I thought it was almost good humoured, as if it was clear both parties were prepared for a feisty battle and both recognised that the other would have their points well prepared.

Nothing to do with her station, and all about hypocrisy. Because avowed socialist MPs who say they support RMT and working people shouldn’t act like liberal elites who give lip service but whenever they’re needed vanish off to music festivals to get pissed on champagne.

I've just watched the longer clip it and yeah, it was very much "know your place /class traitor" @JustAnotherPoster00.

Raab was unpleasant on a number of levels and that was before the disgusting wink. Last year Angela Rayner called the Tory Cabinet "scum". I see where she's coming from.🤔

Is it OK for the actual elite to go to the opera @Discovereads? Is it just socialists that don't belong there?

Do me a favour and look up what champagne socialist means as that is what Raab called Raynor. It’s not got anything to do with what I think but with what a champagne socialist is defined as being.

Parliament is not fit for purpose - we need to leave the current chamber and approach as a museum piece and build a purpose built chamber with a semi-circle of desks each with a microphone and actually have a parliament with members speaking to (rather than shouting at) each other and working to improve this country.

As far as I'm aware she was invited by an old friend who plays in the orchestra. It wasn't a fancy shmancy Glyndebourne occasion, but a normal performance that cost less than a ticket to a premier league match.

Er no, that’s not what champagne socialist means. Please go read up on it. Hypocrisy features in the definition.

What is it about attending the opera that makes Angela Rayner a hypocrite @Discovereads?

Report

I thought a champagne socialist was someone who has benefited from privilege hugely e.g. very expensive education / trust fund kids etc who then proclaims to be a socialist while still enjoying the benefits of their privilege? A hypocrite in that way.

So I don't get why AR is being called one when whether or not someone agrees with her politics, she's a grafter who came from a fucking difficult childhood and adolescence.

I know he wasn't there but a hypocrite is a PM who bans parties for the entire countries then hosts them himself at the same time. Just as an example.

The whole climate is toxic. This type of roasting goes on all the time in Parliament. I often tune in to watch the lunatic MPs as they try and win the creative insult of the day award. It’s rather like watching ice hockey games purely to see the fist fights. MPs think jeering at each other is their job. They don’t give a shit about governing.

The jeering and insulting has been going on for a few hundred years.
It isn't new. It's how our parliament have always behaved.

The winking at a female member of the opposition is a different thing.

If anything I think it shows even more integrity if you're wealthy but believe you should pay tax and provide public services for those who are less fortunate. I don't see where the hypocrisy is. Much more hypocritical to claim you're a massive fan of this country, to the extent that you want to stuff it economically through Brexit, and then base your business in an EU country to benefit from EU links and lower taxes (Mr Rees Mogg).

I have seen Ronaldo wink at other footballers too. I think winking in general is very odd behaviour.
