www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/04/emma-watson-pro-palestinian-post-sparks-antisemitism-row

For those who don’t want to click the Graun link: EW has been accused of antisemitism for expressing support for Palestine! After her sanctimonious tweets in response to JKR standing up for women’s rights, I wonder if it’s given her a little taste of her own medicine Grin

I'm not commenting on EW!

However this is one of those 'rights aren't pie' things. Sometimes rights are pie. Competing rights and interests do exist and pretending they don't isn't a way to deal with them. It's complex but needs addressed.

Supporting Palestine is one thing. Judging Israel by different standards from other countries/states is another and is anti-semitism, which Emma Watson has not done.

Much like how JKR has been accused of transphobia, whereas what she has actually done is support women.

I have as much sympathy for her as she did for her friend and mentor JK Rowling.

Palestine stands with JK Rowling.
Not even kidding.

Emma Watson did a thing, and as you disagree about her on something, the thing she did must be wrong. Good reasoning.

Er, no-one's saying that. @SirSamuelVimes's post sums it up in case mine wasn't clear!

Hmmmm. I see parallels.

I support Palestine, I object to the PA’s actions on many fronts, I disagree with the quote ‘solidarity is a verb’.

Pesky nuance. That is what is lost when people chant slogans instead of engaging with the issues.

It would certainly be ironic if this lead to another cancellation. But I don’t think it will - transphobia is taken more seriously than antisemitism.

Palestine aren’t famous for their positive stance on LGBT rights, or womens’ rights for that matter.

The Daily Mail are also reporting on Jon Stewart accusing JKR of antisemitism today. Weird.

EW posted her “solidarity” the day after Hamas started lobbing rockets at Israel.
Hamas throw gays off rooftops.
But let’s demonise the only democracy in the Middle East while saying zilch about atrocities elsewhere. Grotesque.

Why the conflation of Israel with all Jewish people? And Israeli policy with the right for Israel to exist? It is a dangerous thing to roll up so many things together.

Antisemitism has increasingly been used as a generalized insult to discredit someone, with only the most tenuous of reasons needing to be attached. It will end up being an own goal in the end if the people involved are worried about actual antisemitism.

Bit like transphobia.

Emma Watson said...proving once again that Hermione is no less an insufferable, sanctimonious shit in real life.

It's certainly true that Emma Watson "did a thing".

She certainly did a vacuous, meaningless, sound bite thing. As it's a meaningless thing it's impossible to tell if she did a wrong thing or a right thing but I don't think it's an anti- semitic thing. It would have to mean something for it to be giving an anti- semitic statement.

Actually laughing.

The thing is, you can never be pure enough for the spiral. They'll find you and they'll judge you and attack you and spit you out.

Bet JKR sends her a very elegant little card with a few well chosen words of wisdom and an open offer of support I wouldn't, but, I'm no JKR

She doesn't come out and declare sides in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, or the Yemeni crisis, or the civil wars taking place in various African countries destabilised by Western bombings. No, the one bit of disputed land in the world that this incredibly profound actress/model decides to pronounce upon just happens to be the Gaza strip and the aggressors happen to be teh eViL jeWs.
