For those who don’t want to click the Graun link: EW has been accused of antisemitism for expressing support for Palestine! After her sanctimonious tweets in response to JKR standing up for women’s rights, I wonder if it’s given her a little taste of her own medicine Grin

@PlanktonsComputerWife
It’s almost like no Jew no news. Brave actress.

BoudecaBains · 05/01/2022 07:52

Being held accountable is not demonising.

.... as Emma is finding out !.

GingerbreadVanMan · 05/01/2022 08:02

Not a fan of her in the slightest after what she did to JKR but I am so happy she’s spoken up for Palestine. Also I’m sick and tired of Israel pulling the antisemitism card every time someone dares to speak up against their atrocities.

You’re sick of it? Diddums. Only it doesn’t happen. Educate yourself on antisemitism, bigot.
CovidCorvid · 05/01/2022 08:09

And now JKR is being accused again of anti semitism due to the goblins in HP. People asking why jkr gave them big noses. Blimey, she didn’t invent goblins.

Duke4 · 05/01/2022 08:15

JKR has been a true allie to Jews. In particular during the Labour antisemitism.

Well this is an interesting turn of events. EW probably isn’t anti-Semitic, in the same way JKR isn’t transphobic. EW didn’t stand by JKR as she was ripped to shreds. Somehow I think JKR’s reaction will be a lot more classy.

Aderyn21 · 05/01/2022 08:20

Fed up generally of hearing the opinions of actors - why do they think their stance on anything outside of their own jobs is interesting to the public?

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 05/01/2022 08:36

EW seems to want to live in an unnuanced and very simple world - who is right and who is wrong? People who can't see the shades of grey and the complexity of real life should stop virtue signalling. I am finding it hard to have sympathy for her after her aggression towards JKR. She seems to take herself a lot more seriously than the rest of the world does. She's just an actress. I've not seen her in anything other than harry potter so I want to say not a very good one but perhaps as an adult she can now act. Either way, she needs to just stick to that as she has contributed nothing meaningful to any conversation.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 05/01/2022 09:06

Why should she comment on anywhere else? Why don’t you?

I'm not a wealthy white British actress who doesn't know nouns from verbs. I just don't have her kind of insight to offer.

@Duke4 when I visited Auschwitz a few years ago, there was a visiting band of students from Israel, several of whom were weeping over the exhibits (in particular, the room with all the clothes taken from murdered Jewish babies; the "living" quarters made from old repurposed German stables, which still had rings in the wall for tying horses to; the platform where the sorting took place into "murder now if weak or a child, or work to near death and murder later" groups). I really should have upbraided them for "pulling the antisemitism card"- missed a trick there!

@Mysterian

Emma Watson did a thing, and as you disagree about her on something, the thing she did must be wrong. Good reasoning.
But it's okay for people to call JKR transphobic despite the only thing she's doing is standing up for women's rights. Well at least EW is understanding how it feels now Grin
buntybanana · 05/01/2022 09:58

@Duke4 disagreeing with the atrocities of the Israeli government does not make you an antisemite. The Israeli government and the Jewish population are not synonymous. You don't sound particularly well informed and I agree with @GingerbreadVanMan - you need to educate yourself.

Duke4 · 05/01/2022 11:59

Make a start with the IHRA definition of antisemitism. Then read a book - Deborah Lipstadt would be ideal. Also, talking to Jews about antisemitism is preferable to listening to vacuous celebrities.

samG76 · 05/01/2022 12:53

Kimikos - I'm not sure if it has to mean something to be anti-semitic. Eg, if someone shouted "Free Palestine" at every visibly Jewish person in the street, it could be a/s despite it being a meaningless phrase (free from whom, and on what basis?). I look forward to her next tweet, maybe "for is not a preposition!"

Not sure if it is a/s - more likely just vacuous virtue-signalling, making EW feel she she is help an oppressed people while actually doing x$% all. It is all about her, though....

Duke4 · 05/01/2022 13:16

A celebrity with 64 million followers and 0 knowledge about the conflict decides to help normalise the incitement and murdering of Jews, painting it as ‘social justice’ and ‘resistance’ or the new keyword - ‘solidarity’.
The account that EW shared from incites antisemitic hate crimes. It doesn’t show solidarity for the Palestinians. Solidarity for the Palestinians would include opposing their oppressive leaders, and their Lebanese, Jordanian, Syrian and ISIS oppressors. And attacking everyone who enables those or deliberately ignores or denies it. But Palestinian ‘solidarity’ never does. It never tells them to quit violence. It never supports Palestinian democracy.
This narrative only cares about Palestinian death and suffering when it’s useful for convincing the world it’s a good idea to murder Jews. And every time these stories and posts come out, antisemitic hate crimes spike elsewhere in the world. So yes, antisemitism.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 05/01/2022 13:59

@SportsMother I am not bothered what judgements you may make about me or my argumentation skills. If you look at everything known to be happening in the Middle East and Israel strikes you as the villain of the piece, then you get judged right back.

Watson is 31. She is neither young nor a girl.

She is extremely silly

What a tiring couple of days.

As a Jewish woman, I would so bloody love just a few days off where no-one mentioned anything to do with Jews, Israel or antisemitism. Dealing with attacks on women's rights is quite enough thank you - could people just stop mentioning Jews for a few days so we can get a break...?

Jon Stewart has now clarified he wasn't attacking JKR - but only after bringing up that old chestnut of the goblins in HP being antisemitic (which most of Jewish Twitter incl me do not think are antisemitic). And Emma Watson has spoken up on Palestinian rights - which again the vast majority of people on Jewish Twitter incl me thought was not antisemitic either.

I couldn't really care less what Emma Watson thinks about Palestine, any more than I care about what she thinks about shoes or about her favourite Prime Ministers or...anything really. I'd rather vacuous celebrities didn't share their boring opinions with everyone but more than that, I wish the media didn't behave as though them doing so was newsworthy.

All today achieved was to strengthen links in people's minds at a subliminal level between Jews and goblins (thanks Newsweek), add to the drip drip drip attacks on JKR, and gild Emma Watson's perfect virtue signalling lily a bit more for those who like that kind of thing.

What a crappy, exhausting day...

Just to note, the real antisemites in all this are the media, who love nothing more than a nice story about antisemitism to get the clicks - the Mail etc are very happy indeed to show headlines about angry Jews with pictures of ugly goblins and piles of gold, while the Guardian etc love nothing better than an article about mean Jews hating anyone who stands up for the Palestinians.

Aaaagh. Shut up. Just shut up all of you.

Meanwhile all the violent antisemites like the guys who attacked a bus full of Jewish kids in Oxford St a few weeks ago or the guy who threatened to murder a Jewish man in a shop in NW London about a week ago or the armies of antisemites on Twitter, Facebook etc remain at liberty, no action is taken at all. You don't hear anything about those stories and what action is - or rather isn't- bring taken there at all.

Write about that, Newsweek. Or the Guardian. As if you would... Angry
