Arlene Foster suing Dr Christian

Apparently he tweeted that she was having an affair (without any proof), and the way he put it was a spiteful little jibe about her being a “sanctity of marriage preaching woman” adding “it always comes back to bite them on the arse”
Now I understand he might have an issue with her as I think she was against same sex marriage. But this man always strikes me as an arrogant twat and a nasty piece of work.

I tried to post the link but I’m such a technophobe! it’s on BBC news website

I can't see any comments at all in The Times app.

I can't see any comments at all in The Times app.

I'm using a laptop access and they only appeared within the last half hour. No sympathy for him that I've spotted in comments so far.

EversoDelighted · 01/06/2021 08:38

I think the app only updates at fixed points during the day. I cannot imagine there will be any sympathy at all.

I am shocked by the number of posters suggesting that women of certain faiths should not be protected by law.

Not just faiths but also political views.
youvegottenminuteslynn · 01/06/2021 09:16

Can't believe he's so far got £7850 out of other people to pay a fine he owes, despite having property assets he could use to pay off the fine. And even if he didn't, the audacity of that gofundme page is staggering.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/06/2021 09:33

I haven't read all this but how could a £125K fine bankrupt him? At his age and the fact that his career has been quite successful, surely he has money, or at least property? Setting up a Gofundme account Shock

NecessaryScene1 · 01/06/2021 09:36

It's £125k plus costs - I've seen total estimates up to £400k. Maybe the two London properties are mortgaged up to the hilt?

But yes, the wailing does seem a little implausible. I'm sure it's going to hurt - maybe both properties need to be sold - but it seems like he should be able to handle it.

A 400k debt you don't want to pay could be tempting to go bankrupt and not pay it. I'm sure once he's informed about the horrible nature of bankruptcy he will change his mind.

That is, if he ever seriously meant it at all and wasn't just trying to garner sympathy.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 01/06/2021 09:43

Yes, who exactly is donating to the GoFundMe?!

GreenBlood · 01/06/2021 09:49

Have a feeling it may be Irish nationalists (and I am one as well as supporting Foster in this case) who sees it as thumbing the nose to the DUP and unionists. Wish they would wise up!

If a substantial part of it has come from "bad" Irish factions and that becomes known, then the good doctor may find that embarrassing some day.

All conjecture on my part.

Berthatydfil · 01/06/2021 10:56

There are now over 400 comments, I haven’t read all of then but there is very little sympathy to him being expressed.

Yes don't think so, really couldn't see many nationalists parting with money for either. I have read through the go fund me comments there's a small percentage representing nationalists as the reason for a donation, the majority seem to be annoyed with losing free speech or grateful to Dr C for his tv career.
His tweet was not "free speech" it was gossip, many discussed it just not online or in ink.

Gembie · 01/06/2021 11:33

@EmeraldShamrock last I looked (on the Go Fund Me) one donation had (Sinn Fein) after their name so it wouldn’t surprise me.

Re previous comments - you are correct, a job in the NHS would be severely limited as he hasn’t done any speciality training. He could probs only work as a trust grade or locum SHO for not great pay

titchy · 01/06/2021 11:39

I suspect that was a pseudonym. There's been several donations made with the name 'Michelle O'Neill' (Sinn Fein leader). I'm sure the real version wouldn't be putting her name to something like this!

Tbf i think it was just me and not really what i was trying to say, but its clearly how its come across, and not the first time ive concentrated on a part of an issue that isnt what the OP meant, so shrugs Of course Arlene Foster should be able to sue doctor Christian. My main criticism was more of a why do you care? Shes awful, but now it seems that has been taken to mean that id be happy to see women of different political leanings or religions raped and abused, so i just bowed out as was making me anxious enough that i couldnt even sleep. Just for future reference, i get it now, and its not so much that its about her, but about a bigger picture. Ok?
FionaMacCool · 01/06/2021 12:13

I've lurked on this debate for several days.
I have no truck with Arlene and her politics. However, as a fellow human being and a fellow woman, I have enormous respect for her as a person.
This is a woman, who, as a child, saw her father come back in from checking their animals in the evening, having been shot in the head by the IRA.
Now, I dont know about any of you, but I know for me, if I had seen my beloved Daddy shot in the head by anyone, I would struggle to forgive them at any level. But, Arlene is a pragmatic woman, and doesn't seem driven by bitterness or revenge.

Furthermore, as a teenager, her school bus was blown up by the IRA. Look at it- there are pictures online.

This is a woman, who literally has been through the wars.
Some pampered git, who, I imagine has very limited understanding of who she is, decides to undermine her by reiterating rumours, and he was called to task about it. Instead of humbly apologising, he doubled down.
What on earth led CJ to hear about, or decide to wade in on, another an issue about which he appears to know little, is beyond me.

One could speculate that it was the enticing prospect of kicking a woman who appeared to be down, that might have attracted him to comment.

I dont agree with her stance on many many issues, and I will happily debate those with her. But, I'd have to be a weak individual to think that my argument is helped by besmirching the good name, of a brave and conscientious woman.

AlfonsoTheMango · 01/06/2021 12:38

@Branleuse writes: My main criticism was more of a why do you care?

Because I care about people being libelled, that's why.

Branleuse · 01/06/2021 13:12

Yes i get that. Just thought id reply after a couple of days so people could see i conceded and understood and get back to all agreeing with each other Smile

Just don't mention hot Weetabix and it'll all be fine.
HighNetGirth · 01/06/2021 13:29

The problem Dr. J has re reducing damages is that a lot of the amount awarded is not about the seriousness of the libel but about his own conduct: reckless, then mocking and dismissive, ignored the case until the last moment, appeared not to tell the truth in the witness box. I don't think a higher court will overturn much of that.

junipertree2 · 01/06/2021 13:54

Yes, @FionaMacCool. I don't think enough people know this about AF.

Despite what happened to her dad, she attended the (republican) funeral of Martin McGuinness, the IRA commander, shook hands with Michelle O'Neill in the church, and has worked with SF for years. She also abstained from voting on conversion therapy (the DUP are all for retaining it, obviously) and seems fairly open to greater promotion of the Irish language in NI (again, the DUP are resisting). So to hear her dismissed as some intolerant bigot is a bit much.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/06/2021 13:56

Who said Weetabix?!

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2021 14:12

was making me anxious enough that i couldnt even sleep

@Branleuse lovely. Don't do that to yourself. I'm happy to make you a warm milk and read you a story even if I don't agree on this point. You can even have a hot water bottle.
