Apparently he tweeted that she was having an affair (without any proof), and the way he put it was a spiteful little jibe about her being a “sanctity of marriage preaching woman” adding “it always comes back to bite them on the arse”
Now I understand he might have an issue with her as I think she was against same sex marriage. But this man always strikes me as an arrogant twat and a nasty piece of work.

I tried to post the link but I’m such a technophobe! it’s on BBC news website

Shes awful, but now it seems that has been taken to mean that id be happy to see women of different political leanings or religions raped and abused

I don't think anyone meant that - they were giving you a more extreme example which obviously you wouldn't think was OK, to explain how we feel similar about this case.

When you realise that you wouldn't hesitate to support a woman being attacked on the street, whatever her views, then it might help you see this in the same kind of way, as we do - or at least see how we could see it that way.

It doesn't mean that if you don't support Arlene on this, you'd be happy to see the more extreme physical version happen to anyone. I'm sure you wouldn't. (And sorry the thread upset you Flowers)

RabCSheldonesque · 01/06/2021 14:44

branleuse I have a proper eiderdown. And this works sleep spray.

I’ll even do you a toddy. But not on the same night as your hot milk. No one wants curdling.

Don’t lose sleep flower. Life can be shite enough as it is without feeling tired on top of the every day trials 🌻

Tibtom · 01/06/2021 14:49

So to hear her dismissed as some intolerant bigot is a bit much.

Quite. The level of tolerance she displays to help keep piece in NI is astonishing. How many of us would shake hands, let alone sit down and enter compromises with, representatives of an organisation that shot our father and blew up our school bus?

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 01/06/2021 15:13

Just don't mention hot Weetabix and it'll all be fine.

What, what?!

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2021 15:16

Can someone explain Weetabix? I missed it and now get confused. And since @WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS is here too, it's time.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 01/06/2021 15:28

I made this name after Lang left FWR. She had controversial breakfast habits.

FannyCann · 01/06/2021 15:31

I wouldn't shake hands with Martin McGuiness or Gerry Adams.
I'm not even Irish.

I don't believe in forgiveness. Too often these days it doesn't involve any serious repentance on the part of the guilty party. Mostly it's a sweeping under the rug, times have moved on, forgive and forget.

I'm still cross about the Rainbow Warrior. Though I do love holidays in France. Confused

ScreamingMeMe · 01/06/2021 15:40

Warm weetabix, wasn't it?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 01/06/2021 15:47

I'm afraid all the great women's rights campaigners seem to have feet of clay.

Or in this case, perhaps an allegedly edible substitute for clay.

It's like the Russian opposition campaigners. They're all homophobic. Well no shit Sherlock. MLK was an adulterer, Gandhi had some weird ideas about women, everyone is an arse in some way.

Sometimes though, if anyone is going to be able to move forward, then forgiveness or at least acceptance is necessary. In the case of a whole Country then yes Leaders had to show they were prepared to move on. Personal preferences have to be set aside.

True FionaMacCool I know a woman whose father was murdered by the IRA and in an area where Margin McGuiness was allegedly in command. She couldn't even spit his name and was incandescent with rage when his obituaries were placed calling him a peacemaker.

I don't blame her for that but I do admire Arlene for being able to put personal hurt aside for the good of her country even if I disagree with a lot of her politics.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 01/06/2021 16:18

Margin?! Martin!

FannyCann · 01/06/2021 18:19

You are of course quite right @MissyB1
There's a reason I'm not a politician!

I thought The Queen was wonderful shaking hands with the two of them. The sight of McGuiness swaggering around in a white tie at a Buck Pal banquet filled me with rage.

I commend Arlene for her commitment to the peace process. I didn't actually know about her history. Bet CJ didn't either.

PamDenick · 01/06/2021 19:44

This has been a very interesting thread. I have learnt a lot. And yes, I agree with the poster who said everyone is an arse in some way...

Have to agree. I still disagree with Arlene Foster on nearly everything politically, but I respect what she's been through and overcome.

And I realise with shame that I'd blithely dismissed her as just a bigot before. Memo to self: nuance.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/06/2021 21:39

I wouldn't shake hands with Martin McGuiness or Gerry Adams.
I'm not even Irish. Nor would I but I wouldn't shake the hand of Ian Paisley senior or junior or Margaret Thatcher since dead people are included.

It was a war, awful how Arlene's family suffered many families did on both sides.

I am starting to think @Branleuse has a point, Arlene's victory is great, Arlene as a person and her party are not.

allmywhat · 01/06/2021 22:04

So, legal MNers, is there any chance he might appeal and get the damages increased?

Appealing is an obnoxious thing to do given he's already been told off by the judge for the distress he caused to AF throughout the whole process. Plus there's the whole "if she says it's not true" bit. Plus, if I was a judge I I would feel compelled to do this just to see the look on his face, but then there are very good reasons I'm not a judge.

TheRebelle · 01/06/2021 22:11

He’s arrogant enough to appeal it but I would imagine it would be against his legal counsel’s advice. I know people think lawyers are money grabbing but when I worked for a solicitors they’d always advise clients against costly litigation if at all possible.

C0nstance · 01/06/2021 22:11

I cant believe he took another pop at her Confused

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 22:11

If I were a judge (and I’m not) I’d give more of a penalty to those who prolonged the process for their victim.

And that ‘if’ would get it doubled.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 01/06/2021 22:21

That 'it' is so fucking stupid of him it's almost inconceivable and yet at the same time, based on the judge's assessment of CJ's character it's entirely unsurprising.

Siri: what does an ego created by male privilege look like?

allmywhat · 01/06/2021 22:45

:( I just looked at his fundraiser and there's a recent comment from a pensioner who "sacrificed a few luxuries" to donate 50 pounds because he likes Jessen's TV persona.

I can feel my loathing for this man intensifying by the second.

NorthernIrishFeminist · 01/06/2021 22:46

@junipertree2

Yes, *@FionaMacCool*. I don't think enough people know this about AF.

Despite what happened to her dad, she attended the (republican) funeral of Martin McGuinness, the IRA commander, shook hands with Michelle O'Neill in the church, and has worked with SF for years. She also abstained from voting on conversion therapy (the DUP are all for retaining it, obviously) and seems fairly open to greater promotion of the Irish language in NI (again, the DUP are resisting). So to hear her dismissed as some intolerant bigot is a bit much.

junipertree2 I agree Politically I’m nationalist I have been team Arlene on this and whilst I disagree with her politically I have a sneaky admiration for her for some of the reasons listed by junipertree2 also for how she has been able to take control of such a patriarchal party. I wonder how many of the posts condemning her as a bigot and an awful person on this thread have been made by English posters lumping all DUP politicians together?
