Apparently he tweeted that she was having an affair (without any proof), and the way he put it was a spiteful little jibe about her being a “sanctity of marriage preaching woman” adding “it always comes back to bite them on the arse”
Now I understand he might have an issue with her as I think she was against same sex marriage. But this man always strikes me as an arrogant twat and a nasty piece of work.

I tried to post the link but I’m such a technophobe! it’s on BBC news website

@UhtredRagnarson

Very telling that he asks “is the man a paedophile?” and not “is the girl being raped?”
Yes, that also hits me right between the eyes, every time. 'Let's consider this perfectly ordinary, decent man in Niger, who is simply following the cultural norms of his country...'

The tone of eminent reason, and the entire discussion framed around the male perspective. The utter fucking luxury of quibbling over semantics while ignoring the fact that pre-pubescent girls are forced into marriage and sentenced to a life of repeated rape.

From doctors, working in the UK, in 2021.

@MaudTheInvincible

I give up Hmm there's a working link in the twitter thread Grin
The link works fine Smile

Yes, that also hits me right between the eyes, every time. 'Let's consider this perfectly ordinary, decent man in Niger, who is simply following the cultural norms of his country...'

And no examination of why cultural norms so frequently involve sexual violence against women and girls.

He’s essentially justifying what the man in Niger is doing because he identifies with the man. He can’t understand why it would be a problem for the girl. Despite being a doctor with access to all the facts regarding the physical impact on her, the very well documented risk to her life, he doesn’t see her as a person in this scenario. The man is the person. CJ is a man first and a doctor when it suits.

This is well worth a read Shock

I'm not surprised the damages were so high. The judgement sets out in great detail the huge number of lies that Jessen told.

This is a bit odd though?

^I consider that the appropriate award is £125,000. In terms of proportionality, I look to the latest edition of the Green Book and I note that the guidance in respect of the range of compensation for the total loss of one eye is £80,000 to £140,000. Damages for female infertility: up to £150,000. Bladder, complete loss of natural function and control: £125,000 - £170,000. Total or effective loss of one hand: £85,000 - £145,000. Amputation of 1 foot: £150,000 - £250,000. Having considered the guidance contained in the Green Book (2018), I am satisfied as to the proportionality of the award in this case.°

Thanks so much for sharing that - absolutely fascinating and also satisfying to see someone's barefaced lies being quite rightly challenged and dismissed. He clearly thinks that he can bullshit his way out of trouble but unfortunately for him, and fortunately for justice, things don't work like that outside of Twitter...

UhtredRagnarson · 28/05/2021 18:05

Agree that is odd @ItsAllGoingToBeFine. Why would they compare it to physical injury compensation?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/05/2021 18:11

Weirdly I think that's how it is defined?

UhtredRagnarson · 28/05/2021 18:12

Interesting. I wonder why.

PronounssheRa · 28/05/2021 18:42

According to the judgement jessen owns 2 cental London apartments. right move has other apartments in the same block for sale for approx 1 million each. Yet he wants the people to crowdfund his legal costs.

Christ that is some brass neck.

Manderleyagain · 28/05/2021 18:44

So the judge is saying that for her, in her context (NI politics, she being a strict Christian married woman etc) the effect of everyone thinking she is a hypocrite who was unfaithful to her husband while preaching traditional values is equivalent to the effect of the loss of bladder function, the loss of one hand, infertility and the others in that price bracket. That's interesting. I don't really agree that they're equivalent. Perhaps that is a testament to the importance of reputation, and the appearance of morality.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 28/05/2021 18:45

I really wish I had the charisma and publicity skills to turn this into an opportunity to make the Fistula Foundation go viral.

Think what they could do with £150k.

Unreal, isn't it? Here's hoping he doesn't raise much more at all. It's obscene.
TedImgoingmad · 28/05/2021 18:55

God, what a grifter!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 28/05/2021 18:56

That judgement Shock. It's a forensic analysis of someone who has 'misrepresented the truth' from the outset. No wonder the judge awarded her £125,000.

powershowerforanhour · 28/05/2021 19:02

It's on the front page of the BelTel, the Irish News, the Newsletter and the Daily Mirror here. What's the opposite of the Streisand effect- when publicity you encouraged turns against you? Hoist by your own petard I suppose.

UhtredRagnarson · 28/05/2021 19:21

He thought people were comparing him to Barbra Streisand. Lol.

WeeBisom · 28/05/2021 19:22

I can try to answer why the judge compared it to personal injury. A few years ago the U.K. lost a human rights case in Strasbourg where it was held that defamation damages are too high and threaten free speech. I think it was after Elton John or somebody won over a million. Judges have since been told that the damages they award have to be in line with personal injury and not more . So I imagine what the judge has done is he has made this comparison to make the judgment more appeal proof. Christian won’t be able to say it violates his right to free speech as technically the damages are still in the accepted range. It is not intended to say the damages are equivalent to losing an eye or fertility or whatever.

I do take the point that it’s a lot of money however the aim behind compensation for defamation is to throughly vindicate the persons reputation. She has to now live with an entire life of people hearing she had an affair and stuff on the internet sticks around for a long time.

Thank you. That helps make sense of it.

The ratio on his cap-in-hand tweet is glorious. Perhaps the other misogynist doc could pop a fiver in his begging bowl.

Also the loss of a foot or something similar would have done far less damage to Arlene as a politician than the accusation of adultery also on a personal level she may also have found it easier to deal with an amputation thar someone trashing her marriage for giggles even if her DH 100% believed from the beginning it was without foundation it would still have made Christmas 2019 pretty awful in the family. It is different explaining to your kids some people hate Mum because she is religious and a unionist than explaining some people are saying I cheat on your dad
