Antidepressants were just a massive no. So want to try something milder but hopefully more effective….currently struggling alot with my mental health. All suggestions very welcome x!

St Johns Wort is supposed to be good for MH. A relative takes them and has recommended it.

A pharmacist recommended probiotics for my daughter this wk. She advised the most recent research was compelling.

Another suggestion is 5HTP.

Definitely make sure you're getting vitamin D and your B vitamins. Both are associated with low mood when deficient.

Magnesium

Magnesium

This.

Vitamin B complex is good for mood but especially for nerves and not being irritated

SoniyaJonas · 24/07/2023 08:48

Considering the challenges with antidepressants, exploring alternative, milder treatments for improved effectiveness in addressing mental health struggles is preferred; any suggestions are appreciated.

Look in to adaptogens like ashwagandha and rhodiola. They can be really effective.

I've experimented with taking and stopping magnesium multiple times to make sure, but in my experience, it really seems to help my mood substantially.

We take Novomins Magnesium Gummies. They have dramatically improved my sleep. DD who has anxiety takes them to improve her mental health, and saw a big difference in a short period of time.

If you have a reasonably varied diet then you don't need a multivitamin, other than Vitamin D in the winter.

If you don't want to take antidepressants then don't - but a multivitamin isn't going to do anything. There's a reason antidepressants work, and a reason people take them.

If you don't want medication, I'd recommend focussing on exercise, healthy diet, and maybe some counselling.

Magnesium

Yes, rubbed on your feet to help you sleep. Better sleep helps so much.

Also, vit D and K.

Natural light, nature and exercise.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/07/2023 06:23

B vitamins, Vit D and magnesium as far as I know are all helpful for different reasons.

HappyHolidai · 25/07/2023 06:30

I take multivitamins and minerals plus a vitamin B complex and it definitely makes a big difference. I know the theory is you don't need any extra on top of a good diet but my experience is that it really makes a difference. I just get the supermarket/Boots ones, with Natures Aid vit B complex.

I dropped the "minerals" a few months ago after catching Covid but have added them back in again and am sleeping much better again.

Lelivre · 25/07/2023 23:51

It's been said that...The singular best thing you can do for your mental health is to exercise. Do you do much? Have you tried strength training?

Melroses · 26/07/2023 00:00

Vit D + K2 with magnesium, zinc and boron.

Plenty fish, whole grains and veg and fermented foods.

Fresh air, exercise and dancing ❤️

I found Vit D and Vit B complex with the odd iron tablet helped me the most when I was very down. I also detest antidepressants, they just zombie-fy me.

No idea whether it was the vitamins alone or whether it was the process of looking after myself for a change, even if it was only taking two tablets. It's the little things of self care, telling yourself you are worth it. There again maybe it was the vitamins as my diet was also awful at that time Blush

Rummikub · 26/07/2023 02:22

Vit D helps mood

There is also research on gut health linked to brain health so anything that improves that- prebiotic.

Rummikub · 26/07/2023 02:23

Making a note of magnesium.

Are gummies suitable for vegetarians? I’ve always swerved them.
